Scratch #59-2012 tackles a tiny beer in bold strokes. Designed by Jeff Musselman, “Mighty Moose Mild” draws inspiration from classic English ales and delivers a delicate session beer. With an earthy amber color, nutty spice notes from Fuggle hops and a damp forest floor yeast finish, Scratch #59 fills us with dreams of spending the day in a low-ceilinged pub throwing darts, eating fresh fish and chips and downing numerous pints. Scratch #59 measures in at 22 IBU’s and 4.7% ABV. On tap only at the brewery. No bottles.

I had this on tap at Vito's Pizza and beer - thanks to JC for alerting me to this one. Enjoyed chilled in a tulip pint.

The color is dark caramel with mild haziness and light cream head that settles to a ring of beads. There is a light lace that remains. The smell is slightly caramel with a mild malty toasted note and slight butterscotch tinge of diacetyl with gentle stone fruit accents. The feel is moderately high carbonation with a slight sweetness and grainy tinge with mild toasted texture and light smoothness of yeast.

the flavor is malty up front with only a hint of toffee and maybe a light cocoa element which leads to a hint of yeast fruitiness and some mild diacetyl adding to the caramel elements from the malt. There is a light herbal balance from the hops with a semi-dry finish. Overall I really enjoyed this, it is sessionable and has a lot of flavor for the abv level, well worth having again if only.

In comparison to most of the beers at Troegs, this had a much lower hop note. It was very smooth and had a nice mouth feel, with a nice flavor.

At 4.7%, this would be a nice session beer, although the day I decided to sit and have a few, I kicked it. So much for that!

There was a nice balance with the hops and the malt and I hope they decide to make a few more scratch beers like this one.

Served in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a light to medium copper color with a billowy white head. The head faded quite fast giving way to only a minimal amount of lacing.

Smell – Carmel sweetness with a light malt base are in the nose. These are mixed with a light citrus hop aroma.

Taste – The taste is much of the nose. It starts out of sweet caramel and bread. The hops come more into play toward the middle with some citrus mixing in with the sweet caramel. These two flavors persist and take the taste to its finish.

Mouthfeel – Lighter in body with a moderate level of carbonation. While making it very easy to down, it is quite average.

Overall – This is a simple very easy drinking beer; a good session beer perhaps (although a more expensive session). While it does have good flavor in some ways it is rather one dimensional.

Appearance: Arrives with a very hazy caramel color; while the head was very modest that was due to the beerkeep's pour as there was decent lacing left behind

Smell: Caramel overload with undertones of stone fruit

Taste: A caramel wallop, up front, though the beer adds stone fruit flavors that cut into the sweetness by mid-palate; earthy hops and a hint of grain join the flavor parade in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation

Overall: I have had Milds with a bit more of a hop profile (and I prefer them that way) but this had a nice flavor profile and never became cloying despite the massive caramel malt flavors on the front end

Served on-tap at the Brewery.

A - Pours caramel amber brown with a dense two finger tall white head leaving thin streaks of lace down the glass.

S - Smells of caramel sweetness and plenty of grain throughout. Some light citric hop bitterness comes through as it warms up. I was expecting a bit more hops to this one.

T - Starts off with quite a bit of grain, not really chewy but it is noticeable, quickly giving way to a bit of toffee and caramel sweetness. As it warms, the fuggle hops come through a bit more but they never get to the level of being overpowering. Finish is a little sweet with some bitterness, not lingering for very long.

M - Medium body with a light flavor and moderate carbonation. Fairly grainy throughout with a little hop bitterness at the end of each sip.

O - All things considered this one was decent. The flavors were mild, just as they should be, and the low ABV makes it easy to drink. Not my favorite but still pretty good none the less.

A - Served with a bronzed body that had a two finger, white head...the head receded slowly and settled into a full cap...nice lacing was left behind

S - The nose has a big fresh grain presence to it...caramel helps to sweeten things up...if you search hard enough you can pick up a nice cocoa powder aroma

T - The grainy presence carries over onto the palate, where it's in full force...raw grain and a "green" flavor are present throughout the entire beer...the supporting characters come and go...there is a tingly hop presence from the middle of the beer to the finish...it adds a crispness...there is a fruity flavor coming through in the middle which I'm sure is from the yeast...although it's faint, if you search hard enough (again), you are able to pick up a butterscotch flavor...this comes and goes and when it's there it adds a nice sweetness

M - Medium bodied...smooth, "green," grainy, tingly hops

O - This one was good for a session beer...it doesn't fill you up and the low ABV makes it perfect...the flavors provide a lot of grain and they also let some other things come through...if you search hard enough

A-light brown amber color with a decent white head and
some lacing

S-light citrus and hints of caramel

T-some citrus and grassy flavors combined with a caramel sweetness and light hop presence

F-medium to light body with moderate carbonation

O-I guess I was looking for something with a bit more distinguishing flavor, more compelling

On-tap at the brewery. Amber not ebony, so I defaulted to pale mild. As the beer was poured, the lights went out.

A: A caramel brown color, transparent, with a half finger of white head. Lace follows. This is a big glass for a session!

S: Caramel and toffee upfront, the aromas are very mild. As the mild warms, citrusy hops are revealed near the finish.

T: From the first sip, the low carbonation and mild finish stand out. The lack of carbonation helps the mild flavors to last just a little while longer. Caramel and toffee are upfront. When the ale is cold, the flavors drop off precipitously. As it warms, the hops come through and provide a fitting ending to the ale. There is no alcoholic heaviness, the mild goes down easily.

M: Clean and malty, sweet with just enough of a hop finish, although a little thin at times. Perhaps the first truly sessionable beer from Troegs. I would have liked another glass, save the whole power outage issue.
