Brewed by:

Pennsylvania, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Suppose a lanky, mild-mannered and malcontent Brown Ale from across the pond started its journey to America, but along the way decided to bulk up and develop a boisterous attitude. Then you might consider this latest Tröegs concoction to be an unabashedly Americanized version of the quiet British style. Bursting with intense hop bitterness and boasting a beefed-up body, this latest Scratch Beer could quite possibly become the Intercontinental Champion of Brown Ales. Belt up!

Took me awhile to write this one up but here it goes...Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours slightly hazy dark brown with a small half finger tall off white head leaving spotty streaks of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of pungent hops, both piney and citric, and the more typical brown ale aromas of caramel, toffee and nuts. Very nice nose on this one.

T - Starts off with a big hop bite that never really fades away. A touch of citric fruit quickly gets enveloped by the piney hops, caramel and toffee sweetness and a light nutty flavor. Finish is pretty hoppy, lingering on the palate long after the finish.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, hoppy feel from start to finish with little to no booze present.

O - One of the better Scratch Beers of recent times. I usually don't like brown ales but this one was very flavorful and easy to drink. I wish it would have lasted a little longer so I could have a few more, alas it is all gone now.

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion with the scratch numbering for the latest 3 beers. At the Troegs taproom, they dont refer to naked elf as a scratch, but the bottles are numbered and labled 73-naked elf. Via social media the new scratches are listed as american brown and english ipa (73 and 74 respectively.) So im adding these next in line, as it seems appropriat since they are all drastically different brews.

Served via gravity fed firkin. The brew appears a dark brown with mahogany to ruby clarty noted through the middle. A tan finger of silky froth site atop with wonderul retention. A full wall of lace sticks all over the glass.

The aroma is very bright with hops. It smells herbal, floral, pine and resinous. A really lucious bouquet with hop charater really shining as the main focus with a light backdrop of chocolate grain.

The taste is bright with hop quality. Floral and herbal are upfront with some pine that then turns really dank. Some toasty toffee malt a bit bready across the back with mild chocolate. The flavor of the hops really shines with a fresh brightness of flavor and mild bitterness.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light level of carbonation. It is a poundable offering. I drank this quite quickly and would happily have another pour or two if given the opportunity. Very enjoyable fresh hop aspects that are more deep and flavorful and aromatic than just showcasing bitterness. This brew is almost in the same vein as hopback. Fans of that will love this with its darker grain focus and bright range of hoppiness.

A - Served with a brown body that had some ruby highlights...the head was thick and off white in showed nice staying power and left some decent lacing

S - The normal toffee, caramel, roast, and chocolate were all present...they were accompanied by a bold hop presence that gave off floral and citrus aromas

T - This starts off on a hoppy note...bright citrus hops stand out above anything else...the regular flavors of the base beer are muddled in the middle...some toffee and caramel come out to add sweetness and the chocolate is a deeper flavor that could get lost in some sips...the finish isn't roasty bitter, it's hoppy bitter with some floral and grassy notes

M - Medium bodied...smooth carbonation, robust hoppiness

O - I can give Troegs the credit for making an American version of a Brown me, some of the base qualities were lost on the palate...but I'm glad I got to try this one while it was around
