Notes / Commercial Description:
As we spiral further toward the end of the Mayan calendar, Tröegs is brewing up a special beer to commemorate the expiration of planet Earth. Celebrate the countdown to extinction and raise a goblet of this colossal Russian Imperial Stout as we plummet into oblivion. If your tongue doesn’t disintegrate as a result of the birthday party cheesecake jellybean BOOM, it most certainly will wreak major havoc on your taste buds. ¿Impending Descent? is as enormous, face-melting, and palate-numbing as it sounds. If there ever was a last beer to enjoy before the apocalypse, this is it!

Sampling a 12 oz bottle poured at cellar temperature in a snifter. Thanks to my brother Brian for the gift.
THe beer pours a pitch black color with creamy tan head of 1 cm that fades to a sturdy edge layer and a few islands in just a couple of minutes.
Big boozy aroma with roasted malt, molassess, figs ad other dark fruit. I also get a pretty good dose of pine hops even after opening the bottle and pouring. The hops fade just a little bit as the glass sits and breathes.
First sip reveals a fairly thick body with a little bit of an oily feel to the texture. I get a fine and spacious carbonation, very slight tickle on each swallow but in general the carbonation is mild.
Flavor is big malt with molassess, roasted malt and coffee. Some dark fruit with figs and raisin blended in and some warming booze on each swallow. The beer is a big robust one that goes well with the foot + of snow outside and single digit temperatures.
This is a hearty imperial stout and I wish I had more of them for the future, maybe a re-release in 750s next Christmas?

Visited Tröegs on 30JAN14. After a glass of #131, I opted for a couple of tulips of Impending Descent, at $7.00 per serving.

The small tulip held a dark, dense brown liquid, with a creamy, fluffy layer of mocha colored foam on top. Lacing was superb; this was quite the attractive bier! Aroma had some rich coffee and dark choco, with semisweet malt notes wafting about. A dose of florality was also detected. It had a medium-plus body, and was smooth and silky going down.

Flavor had more roasty coffee and some bitter, dark choco notes. Whereas the floral action was restrained in the nose, it come on strong and hard at the finish of this one with some pithyness and pine! A wonderful bier, all in all! Am glad I got it on this visit (and a growler to go as well), as I returned two days later and it had kicked. Zum Wohl!!

Had this on draft at the brewery. Poured coffee black with a thin head.

Smells of dark chocolate, roasted grain, burnt coffee.

Tastes of chocolate, roasty grains up front with a piney hop bite that hits halfway through. Very bitter at 140 IBU. But balances well against the dark grains.

Has a rich mouthfeel, almost chewy.

Overall a delicious stout, I think I would have enjoyed this more with a little less hops.

Praise Be We're Still Here! and they brewed this again!! Dark as midnight on the winter solstice. Thick moca head! For those of us who remember it's the oatmeal stout combined with the java stout. The weight that rolls across the tongue is impressive, a testament to the charred malts, and extra time that went into this masterpiece. The sweet malts are crushed by the coffee; I'm looking forward to letting this sit for awhile. Drinking 3 of these will send you into a downward spiral so put it in 4 packs!
Or Barrels!
Thanks
