Notes / Commercial Description:
For Scratch #99, we’re revisiting the blissful world of the Belgian-style Witbier, or white ale. This beer typically features a blend of wheat and barley along with spices and Belgian yeast to create a refreshing and complex flavor. With a dense haze from the red wheat and a foamy white head, Scratch #99 incorporates subtle tartness and a delicate orange aroma that complements the spices and the LaChouffe yeast. The finish is dry and crisp.

On-tap 7/20/13 at the Troegs Brewery Tasting Room in Hershey, PA, served in a tulip glass.
A: The beer is a cloudy yellow color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains a lot of spice, some Belgian yeast, light caramelized malts and a touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out strong spice flavors followed by some citrus sweetness. Then some mild breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a light malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly spicy and slightly bready.
M: Crisp and smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.
O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid sessionable beer to drink for a while.

Troegs Scratch Beer 99
"White Ale - Brewed With Spices"
LOOK: 12 oz bottle. Looks like a standard wit with a dark straw color and white ring of head. Leaves minimal lace.
SMELL: Herbal, twiggy aroma with some sage, fennel, anise and clove. Dry wheat and crackery at that. A hint of orangey citrus is noticeable as well. Has some farmhouse qualities and almost spicy from the use of a Lachouffe yeast strain and the spices employed.
TASTE: Wheat and citrus play well with the musty yeast strain and some herbal tendencies. I can definitely taste sage, dried orange peel, and peppercorns. Has a spicy note as well like pepper and earthy cinnamon which would be stemming from the use of coriander. Tangy light hoppy acidity. This is not your everyday wit, but it accessible at the same time.
FEEL: Light bodied, well carbonated, good feel; just because its light doesn't mean it is watery. This beer has some character to it.
OVERALL: A nice wit from Troegs that almost tastes authenticly Belgian. Perhaps a bit over spiced, but I thought this brew was quite nice. I'd call it an American farmhouse wit?
