Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.30%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
The first beer Tröegs ever brewed was a Pale Ale, so naturally it seems a fitting tribute to the series for Scratch #100 to revert to our roots. Just like that first batch of Pale Ale back in 1997, this latest offering is steeped in experimentation and exploration. So in a way, we’ve gone full circle; back to our origins, but with the same sense of adventure that that has always guided us. For the second Scratch Beer in our line of single hop Pale Ales using experimental hops, we filled our new Hop Gun with over 40lbs. of El Dorado hops. A BrauKon exclusive, the Hop Gun is a device that enables us to extract precious oils directly from pelletized hops. John Trogner is quite enthusiastic about the results we’ve gotten from the Hop Gun. “So far, it has proved to be the most efficient way to infuse hop oils into our beers,” he said. The result is a Pale Ale displaying a blast of fruitiness akin to a hoppy peach with a twist of citrus.

Served on-tap at the Brewery.

A - Pours clear amber orange with a nice two finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving spotty trails of lace down most of the glass. Definitely looks more IPA than pale ale.

S - Smells of fresh ripe peaches and other stone fruits, pine resin, toffee and caramel sweetness. Starts off a little dull but once it warms up it is quite fruity for the duration.

T - Starts off with a nice mix of peachy fruit and strong citric hop bitterness. Hints of toasty caramel and toffee sweetness, pine resin, fresh cut grass and only a touch of warm booze. Finish is pretty bitter with a dash of booze at the end of each sip, leaving the palate dried long after the finish. The hops and fruit are strong, but not to the point of being overpowering, allowing it to be very easy to consume.

M - Medium-Light body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, fruity feel with plenty of bitterness.

O - While I was expecting something a little more exciting for #100 than a Pale Ale I still really like this one. The El Dorado hops work really well with the light bodied pale ale base, adding a very nice fruity smell and taste to the mix. Get it while you can, I doubt it will be around for very long.

2-liter growler into a standard Troegs pint glass. The brew pours a clear copper with a rich 2 finger off-white cap that slowly fades leaving stringy patches of lace on the glassware.

The smell is fruity with hops like nectarines, grass, herbs and a slight floral appeal. A bit of perfume sort of essence is present. As it warms up, there is a unique twist almost like strong herbal tea.

The taste has a bit of dirty cantaloupe, herbs, grass, nectarine, peach and floral aspects. A touch of caramel malty sweetness is there to back along with enough alcohol. The aftertaste is similar to strong tea but without the astringency.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is fairly decent and unique but a little strange around the edges perhaps because I have never had an El Dorado single hop beer before. While not a bad brew, it was kinda a flop considering the leadup to the big 100 in the series. Worth a try but nothing special.
