After what seems like a lengthy streak of hoppy Scratch beer offerings, we’ve decided to brew something on the opposite side of the spectrum. Scratch #115 is an enticing Imperial Stout fermented with Westmalle yeast and brewed with 2lbs. of dark Belgian chocolate and 12lbs. of tart raspberry purée per barrel. The result is a vibrant Imperial Stout brimming with optimism and infinite merriment. Each passing sip of Scratch #115 reveals its enduring charm. It’s a celebration of two flavors that go hand-in-hand. Chocolate and raspberry… it’s the new peanut butter and jelly!

Served on-tap at the brewery.

A - Pours pitch black with a nice one finger tall off white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving small trails of lace down the glass.

S - Smells of raspberry pulp, dark chocolate, vanilla, dash of hops and some dark roasted malt.

T - Starts off with some dark roasted malt quickly giving way to hints of juicy tart raspberries and dark chocolate sweetness. Some vanilla, day old coffee and light hop bitterness round things out. Finish is fruity with some dark roast, lingering on the palate long after the finish.

M - Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Dark, fruity feel from start to finish. Booze is hidden well, only really showing itself toward the end of the glass.

O - This one was spot on from the description. It had plenty of raspberry to offset all of the dark flavors yet it remained quite drinkable. Definitely worth a shot if you get the chance.

On-tap at the Troegs Brewery.

Appearance:
The head and lacing are light tannish. Th head disappears quickly after pouring. The beer itself is an obscure and dark black with a shade of light red.

Smell:
The beer mainly smells like a chocolate raspberry cake. The chocolate and raspberry mix well with a bit of hops poking through but barely.

Taste:
The beer mainly tastes as it smells. The raspberry and dark chocolate tastes mix very well with the bits of roast malts and teeny bit of hops.

Mouthfeel:
Biting carbonation with a silky feel. Heavy bodied.

Overall:
An incredibly unique and delicious stout that I hope gets rebrewed and made into a seasonal for the winter or at least becomes more widely distributed.
