A damn good looking coffee stout. Large fluffy head, lava like bubbles mocha colored, with a sticky lace that seperates into sections down the glass.

Lovely aromas of heavy whipping cream, milk and coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and more cream. Very malty and the thickest aroma I've ever known. Delcious smelling and oh so malty.

Just a damn tasty nicely made stout here. Mouthfeel is so big thick and creamy. Flavors are heavy whipping cream, coffee middle with coffee tannins on the finish, espresso flavors on the finish as well. Tiramisu flavors and dark chocolates with milk chocolate following up. Thick gooey caramel and malt goodness. Tannins build and build on the finish. A bit of alcohol burn deep in the stomach but not intimidating at all. Good job Kiuchi brewery!!!!

12 oz bottle purchased at City Beer.

Pours a dark brown/near black color with a frothy 2 finger espresso colored head. Looks very nice.

Smells of roasted espresso beans and some faint sweet fruit character, toasted malts, and some chocolate.

Big bittersweet chocolate & roasted coffee flavors. Faint licorice & fruit flavors as well. The coffee cominates, but doesn't overpower.

A bit too carbonated & not as full as I enjoy the style. Still fairly creamy & lush. Finishes dry.

Interesting & tasty brew. No problems fionishing a bottle. Could probably havea couple more.

Appearance - 4.5
Pours with a thick head (1in. in Chimay goblet glass). Head is chocolate milk in color, maybe darker. Head sticks around for a while.

Dark black in color. Absolutely no light gets through.

Carbonation seems light but I can't see much except toward the top where the beer meets the head. Head dissapates after about 5 minutes with just traces remaining.

Lacing is chocolate milk in color and only slight.

Smell - 3.0
Smells like a stout. Maybe even a little like a barrel aged stout. I pick up a little chocolate and espresso scent. Overall smell is nice but faint.

Taste - 5.0
First taste... espresso! Oh yes. Exactly what I wanted. A little chocolate in the after taste. Burnt oat flavor is light. The flavor hits the middle of my tongue and is pleasantly overwhelming.

The carbonation taste is on the medium side. Maybe a hair too much but does not detract from the experience.

This tasted as I had hoped and beat my expectations for the style. This will be on my shopping list when desiring an espresso stout.

Mouthfeel - 4.0
The head and light carbonation makes this feel velvety in the mouth. I get a little alcohol burn in the aftertaste, but not bad.

Drinkability - 4.0
I could see having two of the 12oz bottles. It does seem to be a little thick/heavy in the middle of each sip.

Toward the end of my first glass, I found myself wanting another bottle. Yes, I could have another. Maybe 3. Instead, I end up having a nice cup of coffee.

Comments - Awesome!
I don't normally buy beers from Japan. I live in Carlsbad, CA where I find myself very busy with discovering new west coast beers. But, I mix in others of course.

I've been into stouts lately and I really enjoyed this one. It has almost a perfect mix of stout, espresso and chocolate flavors. Try it, you can't go wrong.
Purchased at Pizza Port Bottle Shop in Carlsbad, CA on Friday, September 19, 2008. Consumed on Saturday, September 20, 2008.

A - Opaque black with .75 inch mocha head. Slow to leave, sudsy lacing and thin head eventually.

S - Burnt coffee, burnt malt, bittersweet chocolate.

T - Bitter mocha, creamy finish.

M - Medium to full body, very carbonated, could have been bigger and more coating.

D - Fun beer! Not an all-nighter, though.

I have decided to make this my 100th review! I have a few reviews I haven't posted yet, but for all the great beers and great styles i had, this one in particular was just such an amazing brew.

I enjoyed this bottle at Stumelagram V

it pours up black with a big frothy dark brown head. the nose is sweet, coffee beans, chocolate, vanilla. beautiful! and the taste? wow! hits you with chocolate and coffee. the finish is sweet malty earth. full bodied, low carbo.

congrats Hitachino. for being the only Japanese brewery that can melt my panties...

This poured an opaque black with fluffy dark tan head. It smelled like strong espresso and coffee bean malts with a bit of dark chocolate. It tasted like bittersweet espresso hops and dark chocolate malt with a hint of soy sauce. It was thick with a bit of carbonation, and had a lasting bitter coffee aftertaste. Overall this tasted more like a Starbuck's brew than a beer, but it was delicious either way. It had great body too, making it a perfect after-dinner drink.

With a hard pour, a fairly large head developes. The head shrinks fast enough for me to finish the pour without any overflow. A very stong scent of coffee fills the air. Once the head becomes a single layer of bubbles on the surface, I take a sip.
At first, the flavor of coffee seems strangly distant. The almost pitch black liquid seems to be a mistake in labeling. But then from the back of my tongue and throat, I feel something changing. My second taste intensifies this. A dark roast, a strong brew is detected with just a hint of milky sweetness. A clean taste with no noticable alcohol detected. I am half way through the pint glass and the lace is still covering the top. A deep inhale while my nose is in the glass only intensifies the flavor of the coffee. I Only drink coffee a few times a year and even then it is a fufu mixed creation, not just coffee. This beer smells like the coffee my four cups a day coworkers might have. The coffee lingers in the back of my throat well after having a sip.
It is a good beer but I am more into some of the sweeter coffee beers (my liking of frilly coffee case in point). This beer is probably more to the people who take their coffee black with little added. For those people, this is a beer to try.

Dark, dark brown, well-tanned head is about one inch initially, recedes slowly with some pocking and lacing, and leaves a fairly attractive, thick lace around the top. Good stick left over.

The aroma stars to emerge more as the head recedes, mostly going with the heavily roasted coffee bean (thus the espresso). The carbonation apparent on the nose and initial taste makes me think of coca cola. Quite bittersweet, on the nose and palate.

The body is acceptable but definitely could stand to be richer, fuller, and less carbonated. It does remove some of the super bitter character from the finish. Chocolate, cocoa, coffee/espresso, licorice. All check.

Good version of a great style. Points for lots of character.

Served in my DFH snifter. Poured a deep, opaque brown (almost black), with a half inch tan head the quickly settled into a broken swirl of foam and ringlets. Nose is just like the label promised; espresso, malt and a sweet character, with a touch of earthiness (smell actually reminded me a little of Bell's java stout). Taste consistent with nose, but the espresso is not as big in the mouth and the sweetness is amplified a little. I also detected traces of toffee and perhaps dark fruit at the finish as the brew warmed. Mouthfeel is just shy of medium-bodied and perhap a little effervescent for the style; however, a hint of creaminess peaks forth at the start. The label doesn't lie. This is defintitely an espresso stout. Coffee is well represented; however, I prefer a little more sweetness to be revealed. All and all, well worth your time.

The beer is an uncompromising shade of charcoal black. Coming out of the bottle it was rich with maroon highlighting, but in the glass and even to the light, it is stark and opaque. There was a crowd of bubbles off the pour but all seem to have disappeared, leaving the surface barren and almost completely desolate of even a trim.

The aroma is more abundant with chocolate malt than espresso. It tickles at the nostrils with scents bittersweet. Alongside the chocolate are notes of molasses, dark caramel, blackberry, caramelized sugar and black coffee. It's nice but unlike other big stouts is not something I could sit there and smell all night.

The taste mirrors the smell with an ample level of dark bittersweet chocolate, java, caramelized sugar, molasses and cocoa beans. The taste of espresso is present, but shares the flavour profile equally with the others. This has much less coffee, but far more dimension, than I expected.

Kiuchi uses a recipe for a Russian Imperial as their base for this beer. It does show in the mouthfeel, which is thin but gooey with rich notes of anise, roasted malt, and bitter chocolate lingering. The sugary sweetness, alongside an absence of alcohol, mirrors this with many Foreign stouts too.

Whatever they set out to do, these Japanese brewers surely achieved it. Dark caramel, strong black coffee, raw cocoa bean and hints of vanilla make a great accompaniment to dessert, or just as well a dessert unto themselves. This doesn't exactly compete with my favourite higher gravity stouts, but it can hold its own. Be sure to give it a try.

i really love this brewery. jet black with a tan head that holds and leaves very pretty lace. great nose. dark roast coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of sweet. i wish it was a tad creamier in body, and somehow, that detracted taste-wise, which makes no sense. incredible brew for the coffee drinker.

The bartender's eyes lit up when I ordered a bottle of this beer, and he spoke of his own taste for it as he poured the thick, oily, and very very dark brown concoction into a large wine glass. I was surprised by the amount of head. Tan and clingy, with about a pinky's width sticking around on top for the long haul. Well, so far so good.

A slightly sweetened coffee on the nose, juxtaposed with dark chocolate. Very pleasant.

This has 7.5ABV? Wowsa - that might not be a lot, but I expected to taste a bit more alcohol. Though there is an alcohol bite on the tail end, it is almost completely covered by strong flavors of coffee and chocolate and roasted nuts.

Carbonation builds throughout, but there is never very much of it, and I was left feeling that this beer had just a bit too heavy a feel. Nonetheless, a good stout whose tastiness makes drinking more than one in a sitting distinctly feasible.

Appearance: Completely black with a dark mocha head. Pretty nice retention here and a good bit of lace.

Smell: Roasted grains and espresso - pretty mild in aroma for a coffee beer. There's a bit of malty sweetness to it as well, but it's decidedly more roasty.

Taste & mouthfeel: Bittersweet coffee, like espresso with a cube of sugar in it. There's a roasty, acidic twang that hits the sides of the mouth mid-sip, leading into a long, bitter and drying finish that's unsurprisingly similar to espresso. Nice and thick for 7.5% ABV while still remaining pleasantly dry - lots of oats in this I'd guess.

A 12 oz bottle purchased at State Line Liquors.

A: The stout is black as night, no red, no brown no nothing. A coffee-with-cream colored head arose on pour (quire appropriate for an espresso stout).

S: The nose has the one-two punch of sweet oatmeal and bitter espresso coffee. The coffee has been nicely seeped into the beer, infusing every element of the aroma with java.

T: The smoothness of the nose is in stark contrast with the bitterness of the taste. Roasted, burnt toast greets you upfront, biting at the tastebuds with charred harshness. The acrd flavor of the espresso is evident, building on the burnt malts. Coffee flavors linger long after the sip is gone.

M: When compared to the nose, the taste is a drop-off. The coffee flavor does appear throughout but it is hidden behind a heavy roasted malt flavor.

D: For the nose alone, I'd try another bottle.

poured into shaped pint glass.

opaque black. lots of brown head that slowly fades to wispy layer. nice, webby lacing.

aroma definitely has espresso coffee, although not necessarily "fresh brewed". earthy, dark roasted malt and coffee. hint of estery fruitiness. whiff of stout-like acidity and alcohol.

flavor is coffee as well, quite rich, earthy and roasty. malt peeks through, then some grassy hop bitterness to mix with the coffee and charred malt bitterness. hint of fruit peeks in but quickly taken over. finish is relatively complex and coffee-like. nicely bitter throughout.

smooth, substantial but w/o getting too syrupy. moderate carbonation.

personally i actually think this is almost on par with peche mortel and even KBS, and it seems more readily available too.

this one sure is difrent, the espresso flavor overpours the malt witch tates like rice maby? the espresso is good and the hops kick in nicley but ther is somthing missing inbeetween, i think that it could have been sweeter. i dont hate this beer, it gets better as you reach the bottem. i think that this might make a good black and tan with an approcot wheat ale

A-Pours a rich deep black with a thin tan head.

S-Rich and roasty with plenty of coffee, some chocolate and vanilla notes and an interesting grainy undertone.

T-Sweet chocolate notes at the front balanced by a mildly bitter roasted coffee finish. Excellent.

M-Rich and creamy with a light lingering bitterness.

D-Very smooth and tasty. Moderate ABV for the style but full flavor makes it an espresso stout you can have two of.

This is an excellent beer, one of my favorites in the style.

Appearance: Dark chocolate with a tan head.

Smell: First impression is a frappacino not beer. A little chocolate and hint of vanilla. Smell roasted malts and a little yeast.

Taste: A medium to full bodied beer. Starts with a nice a sweet coffee flavor transitioning to a little bitterness (but not overwhelming).

Mouthfeel: Has a slight oily consistency but leaves your mouth feeling dry at the end. Has a fizzy light carbonation.

Not something I would drink often. You need to be in the mood for something other than a normal beer. But if you are looking for something between coffee and beer. I think you would like this.

This beer was served to me in the bottle which I poured myself into the glass. It is a deep brown-black opaque color with a tan head. The smell is of (naturally!) espresso, coffee and chocolate and the taste is the same. And yet, even though it tasted exactly as it should, it was still unique! The flavor was strong, like roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate, a perfect balance. It was easy to drink, one of those beers that is gone before you realize it.

330mL bottle poured into a Piraat tulip. Poures a nice opaque black with a thin diminishing head. Aroma is roasted coffee with roasted barley right behind. The taste is a nice smooth coffee flavor with malt and dark chocolate right behind. The beer is on the light side of medium with a nice smoothness. This is a very good beer, one I would love to try again on a cold winter night.

330 ml bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a dark, nearly opaque seal brown with ruby hints at the edges and bottom of the glass. The head, a dark, custard-brown hue, builds to a towering inch and slowly recedes to a thick cap of foam. The lacing is sticky and mottled--big bubbles cling to the sides and leave large craters in an otherwise continuous sheet of lace. Overall, a gorgeous appearance. The aroma is unique for the style; you can really pick up the Japanese influence. Milky espresso notes hit first, backed by a grainy, husky, chocolate and caramel malt presence. The hops smell a bit worn, but the muskiness is intriguing.

First sip: not overly impressed, but it's good and gets better with every taste. The coffee is a bit acrid on the finish, but the sweet espresso notes at the front of the palate are backed by this unique, slightly sour earth note that really works for Kiuchi (I noticed this in their other brews that I've reviewed). Mouthfeel is impeccable: thick, smooth body with a near-perfect carbonation level (just a tad bit too high), and the bitter coffee finish is top-notch, giving some of the better American coffee stouts (Pisgah Valdez, Big Boss Coffee Stout, Beer Geek Breakfast...okay, so the last one is Danish) a run for their money. Overall, a very satisfying Double Stout from across the pond, and one I'll surely be purchasing again.

Appears black in the glass. Full, large, well-developed light tan foam. Nose has an expressive espresso character, with mocha, dark roast coffee and a touch of chocolate and vanilla. Lots of taste, with a really impressive coffee character. Finish lasts and lasts. What else to say. Just a really impressively crafted beer. If I were in Ibaraki, I'd drink this daily.

11.2 oz bottle in pint glass

pours slightly thick. it gets a nice brown head that settles down into half a finger of foamy head. black in color with no light getting through.

taste is like a mouth full of coffee beans. creamy and roasty, some nice warm flavors in there. there is an odd sharpness to it. it is very rich and full of flavors. worth a try

Pours pitch black with a thick tan head. Aroma of coffee, milk, toffee, and coffee. Taste of milk and coffee with a bitter roast finish. Medium chalky mouthfeel. Med-high carbonation. A good mix of sweet and bitter. A little bit of a style-buster. Quite a tasty beer.

I love me an espresso stout and when this one hit the shelf I bought it with low expectations.

A: Pours a nice dark jet black hue with a big foamy two finger head. The retention is wonderful and nice sheets of lace are left behind as the contents disappear.

S: Nice sweet coffee aromas. Nice bitter espresso melded with pure raw cane sugar and cream.

T: A wonderful Java stout. Nice roasty espresso flavors with a splash of cream and molassess. The taste is very nice and it all melds together wonderfully.

M: Medium in body but very smooth.

D: Very.... I paid $5 for the bottle, but it's worth every penny. I will be buying more.

Overall: A wonderful espresso stout. I am suprised it actually comes from Japan. I had avoided their other brews in the past, but may just give them a try. If this one is any indication Hitachino makes some great brews.
