Pours reddish brown, one finger immaculate white head. Hazy.

Smell is sweet, there's caramel and some citrusy hops. Kinda grainy too. Oh, it smells like strawberries! Weird, but on the interesting side. It does smell a little like cooked rice, I think. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Tastes of strawberries too; Rice is mostly present in the aftertaste. Banana, slight pepper. Apple? Citrusy hops, like in the smell. Alcohol is there, but not overpowering -- it actually feels very "sharp" in the aftertaste, much stronger than 7% ABV, but at the same time very subdued. And vaguely reminiscent of sake? Maybe it's the rice.

Body is medium, and the carbonation is pretty lively. Drinks really easily.

It may be just a little too sweet, but it's a very interesting and unique brew. Really puzzling to drink something so close to a belgian pale ale and at the same time so different.

From notes taken 12/01/16:

Appearance is gelatinous, semi-opaque, a lovely butterscotch in color with barest hues of pink, with fleks of various sizes in suspension and clinging to sides. Head is nearly pure white, fine bubbled, of lower retention but film-forming in patches. Lace and legs are a delicate sheet of alabaster. Extremely medicinal aroma at first, like menthol and Band-Aids. Gives away in large part to tart fruity and creamy caramel suggestions. Loads of menthol and Band-Aid to palate, but just enough sugar and light apple- and white grape-like tartness to balance this out. Moderately dry and clean finish, apart from mentholated and peppery afterbreath. Full-bodied but thin for what it is. Fine but sparse effervescence, somewhat prickly. Alcoholic warmth with retro-olfaction.

This strawbeery aroma and taste is surprising and intriguing. Makes this ale insteresting instead of just solid. Will try to explore more from this brewery

Appearance: Pours a hazy ruby red, with a loose and bubbly head, pretty quick dissipation and just speckles of lace here and there.

Aromatics: Fairly fruity combination of berry and pome fruits - almost a fragrant as a fruit punch, with sweet and mildly toasted malts.

Taste: Sweet and fruity, mild raspberry, pear, and apricot with touches of spice - maybe cinnamon and cardamom. I do have a reach a bit for that rice flavour that is there, just not as upfront as you might think it would be. A somewhat eclectic and complex array of flavours.

Feel: Not quite light but not quite medium body either - somewhere in the middle. Some finer carbonation bubbles still present to tickle the palate, and the 7%ABV is not entirely hidden, I do get a slight whisper of alcohol vapour during the finish.

Overall: A very interesting and pleasurable beer. I enjoyed its aroma a lot, and if the alcohol wasn’t as apparent to me at the end I could easily drink this daily.

Pairing : I’m going aesthetics here - from a Japanese brewer I’m going to go with a couple sushi suggestions. Though I believe most sushi will go great with this beer, I particularly enjoy tomago (sweet egg) and of course ebi ebi (shrimp), with a light tempura sauce for dipping. I could also easily just have a small bag of shrimp or cuttlefish chip snacks from the local asian supermarket.

Appearance: Semi dark brown color, almost red at times with a thick and dense off white head and a thin lacing around the glass.
Smell: Caramel, light strawberry and mildly earthy, the aroma overall is very light.
Taste: Earthy, light caramel as it hits the back of your throat, there is a slightly tart flavor, but it’s not offensive.
Mouthfeel: Crisp, light, medium bodied and full of carbonation and very smooth.
Overall: Interesting, not quite your typical Belgian strong pale ale, but well worth the time and money- I think I only paid a dollar for this bottle! The flavor was unique and well balanced.

Lots of particles floating around in the beer, reviews corroborate this is normal even though it freaks me out a bit. Has a much lighter, strawberry taste than what I usually associate with belgian strong ales. Very crisp. Pleasant bitter aftertaste. Unique, I'm not disappointed even though it's not my style. Recommend dumping the final sip of the glass since the sediment settles.

Poured from a 330ml bottle into a 16oz pint glass. Pours a rich amber with a thick creamy head that leaves behind a little bit of lacing as it subsides. Beer is cloudy and nearly opaque.

Smell is barely there, sort of a peachy sweetness with a hint of alcohol. It's not offensive, but it's not exciting either.

Taste is malty, with hints of peach and perhaps gingerbread. There is a faint caramel aftertaste. It's definitely a Belgian style beer!

The body is very medium. Not much to say about it. Carbonation is light, but it doesn't feel watery or thin.

Overall - I bought this beer to satisfy my curiosity, and it's been satisfied. I wouldn't seek it out again, but if I'm at a Japanese restaurant that serves this alongside Asahi and Kirin, I'd go for this every time.

It tastes like beer with sake in it. It's not actually red. I don't like sake but it's drinkable. If you like sake and beer it's probably a good pick.

Stumbled upon this at a sushi joint I'd never tried. Ordered it before I looked it up on BA. That was a mistake, because I had no idea it was Belgian style. I do not like Belgian yeast. I always feel like a heathen saying that, but it's true. So I won't be ordering this again, despite there being plenty to like. I ignored the Belgian thing with my rating. If you like that style you'll probably enjoy this. Regardless, it still beats Sapporo and Asahi, which is usually the only beer you find at places like this!

Amber maybe reddish color with a one finger fluffy head with short retention.
Predominant aroma with notes of strawberries, malt sweetness, sake and some mild smoke that later went away.
Flavor with clear notes of strawberry bubblegum, sake, banana, spicy hops, hint of cinnamon, tea with peaches and some sugar.
Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness.
Light body with good carbonation. Alcohol of 7% is well hidden; it just helps to complement the sake flavor.
Interesting and unique Strong Pale Ale with clear strawberry and sake notes. Worth trying.

This was pretty good, not great. Tastes more like an amber AAL than a Belgian Pale Ale. The ABV is hidden too well, it is almost scary to see the 7% ABV. There is no way to tell this, except to look at the label, so watch out. Flavors of grain, rice, and slight roasted notes come forth. This is very drinkable.

Would drink again: Yes

Intriguing color, very bubbly, and unique flavor from the red rice. Mouthfeel more like a soda. While I was glad I tried it, it's just not really what I'm looking for other than it being unusual.

Poured into a tumbler. Pours a medium golden amber with a half finger white head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of sweet malt and unidentifiable light fruit and yeast. Flavor is sweet malt and mixed light fruits, hint of citrus and a light bitterness in the finish. Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. A uniquely flavored light ale with well balanced malt and fruit oriented flavors mildly reminiscent of Sake. Not getting much Belgian character. I don't expect flavor from rice, but expect that the pleasant light flavors are from the red rice used in brewing this. If so, it fits well with the malt. I tried this with a group of friends and this was well received by all. Much better than my expectation for an ale with "rice" in the name, quite enjoyable.

This is a really good beer. It has a unique taste, which must come from the red rice it's brewed with. Would drink more if it wasn't so expensive. This is more of a treat type of beer.

Pours a cloudy, coppery colour that with minimal head. No real lacing and a small head that fades quickly. S: the smells I get are mostly strawberry and maybe a bit of peach?? No real hops notes that I could detect. T: I really like the taste. It has a slightly fruity sweetness that is balanced with a good maltiness. F: Light and quite carbonated. O: Something that is very different to most other beers I've tasted. I like it and would ddefinitely buy again.

L: Pours a cloudy, coppery gold with a minimal head. No lacing. Kind of peachy colored in a way.

S: Peaches right off that go into strawberry and Sake-tinged malt. No hops at the nose.

T: Fruity/grainy notes out of the gate that lead into a medicinal hit at the back of the throat. Bit of brown rice notes in there, too. Very unusual.

F: Light and not too bubbly.

O: A really unusual and addictive brew that I'll probably put in my rotation of staples.

Bottled 7/2014.

Pours a hazy orange-red with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, floral, fruit, and yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, fruit, yeast, and medicinal flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of yeast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that has an odd medicinal quality in the taste that makes this one a bit difficult to drink much of.

Serving type: bottle.

Hitachino Nest Red Rice has a very thick, off-white, crackly head, a hazy, red-gold appearance, and minimal lacing left on the glass. The aroma is an odd combination of smoke, strawberry juice, bread, sweetness, and boiled rice. Taste is of fairly heavy smoke (rauchbier?), some strawberry, white bread, semi-burned popcorn kernel, head shop incense, and low bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Hitachino Nest Red Rice Ale finishes not so dry and highly gulp-able.

Hazy bronze colour with a thick creamy head of foam. A grassy hop smell. Taste is of grain and a nondescript bitterness that does remind me of grass but more of an earthiness going on. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Good.

Crispy and sharp all the way through. Little sweet hint of the same type of rice you'd taste in a better Sake. Carbonation was present but not at all overwhelming. Really enjoyed the dry earthy after taste. I could easily put this down with a sushi roll and enjoy the complimenting flavorings. In a nutshell it like was a bastard child of a wheat or Sake and an ale, I had no problem giving it a home with me.

330 ml bottle was poured into a tulip.

Appearance: A minimal head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a hazy copper orange color with some vision of tiny bubbles coming up through the glass.

Smell: Toasted malts, rice, fruity, a little alcohol, caramel, and toffee.

Taste: Nice creamy and silky malt characteristics. A little booze, fruitiness, and bitterness in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, a little chewy, silky, a little booze, medium bodied, and low to medium carbonation.

Overall: Not sure what to think of this beer. Good and interesting. I'll revisit this one again.
