Hurricane KittyHurricane Kitty
Notes: This brew is a coppery and heavily hopped India Pale Ale. Named after brewmaster Keegan’s grandmother whose driving earned her quite a reputation with local police racing her six children to and from a local Long Island beach ferry during the 1960’s, Hurricane Kitty is the undisputed family favorite. We try to make the hop bill read as aggressively as her driver’s record.

Had this on tap at the Keegans launch party at the Hop Devil Grill. Rebecca, the hot bartender. Check her out on http://www.myspace.com/hopdevilgrill

Anyways, I hope she doesn't influence my review ;-) This beer is the color of bronze, with a big, wavy white head of foam that has specs of golden amber polka-dotting it. The smell is pure hops, cascades I think.

Pretty full bodied, sharp crash of hops hits your taste buds but is muscled with a firm malt chassis.

Initally smooth, finishes a bit biting, this is a good overall IPA. It was especially cool to talk with Geoff the brewer. Good beer.

Dark copper color. Nice balance.

A: Deep brownish amber in color. Forms a large bubbly head that slowly reduces down to an 1/8" of thick light tan head. Copious amounts of lacing.

S: Caramel malt, citrus and some peppery-herby spice.

T: Lots of caramel malt. An appreciable citrus and pine bitterness. Some more spicy pepper. Rather malty, more so than I would care for.

M: Medium with appropriate carbonation.

O: A decent IPA. Drinkable. Spicy. But more malty than I would care for.

Pours a clear, strongly dark amber-ruby, topped by a very thickly made two inch head that subsided slowly to a nice dark beige and leaves thick slabs and arms of finely bubbled lace.

A zesty inhale full of lemon and orange sweetness, subtle yeastiness, hints of earth and herbosity, a fine perfume which sets my taste buds to alert and stands my nose hairs to attention.

Wow what a wonderful flavor. Starts with a blast of citrus, caramel, and bitterness, not as piney a hop blast as many American IPAs, but plenty enough hoppiness, taste, and complexity, as well as deliciously good citrus and earthy bitterness to send the sip into a long finish that is exactly dry enough.

This beer is helped immensely by the just-right mouthfeel. Medium bodied, nice residuals which clear for the next sip, carbonation lower than many others of this style (the way I like it).

Exceedingly drinkable, nuff said.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Color is burnt orange-amber. Pours with a thick 1 1/2 inch off white, creamy head. Disippates slowly, leaving a healthy amount of lacing on the glass.

S: Some earthy and citrus hop aromas mixed with a strong caramel smell. Comes across as being fairly sweet with hints of brown sugar. Smell isn't that great.

T: Some faint hops are present early in the taste, mainly grassy or earthy flavors. Then the malts really kick in. Very bready with some nutty flavors. Similar to the smell, taste continues to carry some sweet notes with pleny of caramel flavors. Finish is a touch bitter, but really nothing like I would expect most IPA.

M: Medium body, moderate to approaching high level of carbonation.

D: This wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't an IPA. I would call this an amber. The hops were too subdued, the IBUs likely in the 20's, and the malt flavors way out of balance for an IPA. I didn't have any problems finishing this beer and at 5.5%, it would make a good sessionable beer. But I wouldn't grab this if I were looking for an IPA.

12oz bottle into Darkness snifter.

A - Pours copper, half a fingers-worth of white head, some spotty lacing and a thin ring around the glass remains. Some whisps here and there on top.

S - Grapefruit, sweet citrus, nice malt notes, slight bitterness. Not exactly sure how old this bottle is, but it's lost some hops, that's for sure.

T - Grapefruits first and foremost, some citrus hops, slight bitterness, subtle malt character. Really nice mix of hops and malts. Not sure if this is old or not, but it's pretty darn good.

M - Light, good carbonation for the style, crisp and refreshing, oily finish.

D - Well, I really liked this IPA. A nice balance of hops and malts and neither were overdone, IMO. Give it a try, I sure enjoyed it!

From 12oz bottle to Bruges hybrid glass on 8/16/11
*From notes

A: A filtered dark crimson-amber. A standard pour yields a 1.5 finger head and some decent lacing.

S: Musty marmalade. It's got a raisinated quality to it. I'm not sure how fresh this is.

T: Cellared hops and pine. It's resiny, but not in a good way. It's got a concentrated nature to it, making the faded hops all the more dissapointing.

M: Great texture and proper carbonation. It's simply too bad the beer didn't meet the bar set by the mouthfeel.

O: Keegan's Hurricane Kitty, at least in this presentation, was quite a letdown. I'm under the impression that I picked up a stale sixer (shame on you, Bowery St. Whole Foods!), and therefore this review may be written under false pretenses. None the less, the bottle I consumed was simply to uptight, and didn't showcase any of the qualities I look for within the style, east or west coast be damned.

I'd certainly try this again (preferably on tap), but in the mean time, it won't be getting my recommendation.

On-tap at Prime 16 into a shaker pint.

A: Clear medium-amber body under a huge 4" head os super creamy off-white head (the keg just kicked, so this was a freebie). Tremendous retention and lacing. Excellent.

S: Umm, no. Sourdough bread, rancid apricot, vegetal hops. Pure grossness.

T: All the grossness of the nose, plus some rotting pumpkin (apropos of early November and rapidly-aging jack-o-lanterns), but with a touch of hops bitterness on the tail end that at least give it a marginally clean finish. Still terrible.

M: Lively, frothy medium body. Pretty solid.

O: Boy I'm glad I didn't pay for this one. I'll gladly give it another shot if someone gives me a bottle, but this particular keg was nothing short of disgusting.

Cheers!
