St. Austell Brewery – Cardinal Syn
Dubbel – 7.8% - 750ml Bottle - Best Before End Dec 2016

Been looking forward to seeing how this compares for a long time, being a Cornish Belgian-beer fan.

Appearance: Black, very dark for a dubbel with small light brown head which dissipates quickly.

Aroma: Not much here apart from Belgian yeast, alcohol and dark sugar.

Taste: Wow, what it lacks in aroma it certainly makes up for in taste. It actually looks and tastes more like a Belgian strong ale (Chimay Blue) than a dubbel in my eyes. You get yeast upfront, dark molasses and spices in the middle and then a long, sweet finish, courtesy of the caramel and demerara sugar. Don't know which yeast is used here, but tastes similar to Chimay's.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body. Not as carbonated as other bottle conditioned dubbels I've had in the past, but it's nice.

Overall: Very nice indeed. While it’s never going to take over cellar space that has already been allocated to the classics from Belgium, it is still a top interpretation of the style that I thoroughly enjoyed. 8.7 / 10
