Pours a pale orange colour, cap of white head, not much in the way of lace. Smell is citrusy and quite fruity, a bit of mango, orange gummy bears, fairly generous hop profile, underlying sweet malt. Taste is initially dry and bitter, muddy mixture of hops and malt, honey graham cracker, citrusy but no fruit specificaly makes its way out of the muddy mix of flavours, bitterness softens mid palate with a light sweetness, hoppy aftertaste. Medium - high carboantion, medium body. This is OK, not something I will probably ever purchase again but if offered to me I would be alright with drinking this again.

Nothing to get too excited about, but not a bad ale from a commercial brewery.

341ml bottle, a single from the nearby Liquor Stores Int'l Emporium Inc location. Hah - nowhere on this offering do they refer to an 'IPA', which, given their main product, is fucking gut-wrenchingly ironic.

This beer pours a clear medium copper amber colour, with two fingers of weakly foamy, and mostly bubbly dirty white head, which leaves some decent layered stone arch lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells straight away of meaty, somewhat funky cat-piss informed citrus hops, with a further mixed tropical fruitiness, bready pale malt, a fake sugary candy character, like old Pez inserts, and a bit of wet cardboard. The taste is more rather streamlined orange, white grapefruit, and still muddled tropical fruitiness, thankfully having shed the neighbour's alley cat essence, a mildly crackery pale grainy maltiness, a burgeoning metallic flintiness, and some soft earthy herbal notes.

The bubbles are fairly light in their basic frizziness, the body medium-light in weight, and a bit stoney in its otherwise plain smoothness. It finishes barely off-dry, the lingering musty orange bitterness still rather heady, with an ably supportive pale malt sweetness. Swuh?

So, as already alluded to, Alexander Keith's spends years trying to convince the Canadian beer-drinking public that their pale lager is really an IPA. Now, they actually have one, and a single-hopped, craft-beer geek orgasmitron-wannabe instance at that, and they don't even call a spade a spade, as such. Anyways, the Galaxy hop, in all its south-seas splendour, does well by this otherwise run of the mill pale ale - I have my biases, yes I do, but if you were to jam this into my hand at a party, origin well enough obfuscated, I'm not sure that I could differentiate this from yer (maybe below) average Canadian craft IPA.

Alexander Keith's Galaxy Hop Ale
473 ml can

Notes: Mainly clear yellow gold body beneath a short head of frothy white. Aroma is limited but some general citrus / tropical fruit comes through. The flavor follows suit but without the hop character there wouldn't be much to this beer. Tangerine and pineapple give it some life. Balanced. Clean. Free of defect. Keeping in mind that it's just an ale and not an IPA, it pretty much hits the target.

Purchased at The Beer Store approx. $2.45/473ml can. Served at 3deg C in a water glass

A- Very good. Above average deep golden colour. Opens well with a solid 2" head settling down to a film within a minute

S- Very good. Citrus scents.

T- Very good. Light, carbonated highly, long finish. Have had Galaxy hops blended with other hops in the past but on it's own, first time... enjoyable.

M- Light on the tongue!

O- Very good. Definitely will buy again. Won't win awards or anything but pretty nice none the less.

Food Pairing

This nice little IPA paired well with... mild cheeses. Nice gouda or creamy Havarti.

Can: Poured a bright clear copper/amber color ale with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of lightly sweet caramel malt with some light tropical fruit notes. Taste is also a mxi between some lightly sweet caramel malt with light tropical fruit. Body is thin and aftertaste is quite watery with good carbonation. I was quite excited to try the Galaxy version but this is quite a miss with almost no hops punch.

Date code is G11H410055 which means it was canned July 11, 2014.

Light orange hazy body. Full head rests at 2 fingers. Tropical fruit in the nose but sadly this does not carry through in the flavor as a malty cardboard taste is present. I do catch glimpses of tropical fruit but it`s a fail for me though it`s miles better than their ``IPA``.

A: Copper with an orange tinge, clear filtered, little carbonation, 2 fingers of off white head like dirty snow.

S: Tropical fruit, citrus and floral like Hawaiian punch. Bitterness comes in on the nose rather like chili peppers. Fruity and sweet.

T: Tropical fruit punch, papayas, mango, pineapple, light sweetness, little bitterness on the end. Light maltiness.

M: Medium body, little carbonation.

O: Great scents and good flavours. Not overdoing it for an IPA, i.e., kind of light but fragrant and fruity. Quite pleasant and I wouldn’t mind having it again.

473ml can from the Ottawa LCBO for $2.75

Appearance - Clear amber/copper with a large size fizzy beige coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, metallic, peach?

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel, malts, and hops. There is also some light grapefruit and something sweet along the lines of peach.

Overall – Seems just like the other in the hop series of beers.. passable but boring and far from the great american IPA's on the market today. I think their cascade version is the best of the bunch.
