on-tap, elysian tangletown

appearance: served in a shaker pint, hazy golden orange body, light white film

smell: well defined peppercorns, white peach, yeast

taste: as a saison, this has some definite style-deviations, but I'm able to look past that due to the lovely flavor the rainbow peppercorns provide - bold and just a bit spicy. white peach, yeast, moderately hopped, citrus. Enjoyable.

mouthfeel: a bit big for the style, nice edge from the spice, well hopped

overall: good stuff - elysian's brewpub-only beers continue to impress

Chill hazed Amber with a small white colored head.

Smell is WOW Black Pepper! I love black pepper so I might be biased. Bit of Honeysuckle and coriander but this is a pepper beer!

Starts out Black Pepper. Lots of Coriander. Little bitter with lots of flowery taste.

Tasty but I have had better.

On tap at Max's last night.

The Saison Poivre pours a golden amber color with exceptional head retention and good lacing. The nose is impressive, showcasing considerable clove, pepper, honey and underlying spice. However, as good as this beer smelled, it was even better on the palate. The flavor profile generally replicates the nose, except there is considerable pepper, belgian spice and some noticeable hoppy bitterness on the finish. Ultimately, although the mid palate is moderately sweet, the finish is fairly dry and long. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, with a long, spicey, peppery finish. Drinkability is quite good, though there's so much flavor and spice, it's hard to rush through a glass of this stuff.

Call me very, very impressed.... one of the best domestic saisons I've had in some time.

The aroma is just pure pepper. I think of the leaves of the California pepper with the red fruit. Not excessively peppery on the tongue, but there's a little residual warmth after a few sips. There's a strong taste of something like honey.

This tastes quite malty and wheaty. It's not so yeasty, but it could be the weird pepper taste masks the yeast. Tart, almost, at least tangy. I can't say this is a very good idea, but the whiff of pepper in the nose is really intriguing. It just gets tiresomeFrom the 22 oz bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham.

Gold/orange (2 row instead of pilsner?) with a lacing of white foam.

Musty pepper.

Heat's pronounced and mixes with a little tang on the back. Nothing hop-wise or yeast-wise. Could really stand to be tarter and fruitier. I'd call it a pepper ale not a saison.

No texture, not totally wrong for the style.

oh dear. this is a gateway saison. this fair golden lass comes laced with pepper. and i can't think of anyone i wouldn't trust more than someone who doesn't like pepper. huge pepper aroma and a very pronounced and balanced flavor. the pepper mixes well with the slight sweetness dryness of the beer, leaving in its wake the savory finish. easily drinkable and just as easy to share. thanks to the lovely folks at elysian fields today, very gracious hosts.

If you like peppery - have at it! If you don't - try something else. It's that simple for this highly flavored Saison. I'm thinking its a bit too strong on the pepper and not enough Saison yeast funk. Still, enjoyable for a one time experience. Glad I tried. Won't buy again.

On tap at OBF in the Buzz Tent.

Clear golden brew under rocky white head. Huge peppery nose with good hop presence and malty sweetness, one of the most phenomenal smelling brews I've encounted. The pepper doesn't come through so much in the taste, this is actually a pretty nice balanced taste, a bit hoppy for the style. Dry lingering finish. Not sure I'd want to try and consume a large amount of this, but the smell alone makes this a beer to seek out for saison-ites.
