More like a dry stout, fresh on tap at Cole’s. Licorice and roast aromas. Off notes, like mold, which is likely the lactose milk part that sometimes emits this, more like goat cheese and coffee unhappily married. Dry finish. Above average mouthfeel though oily.

My first, last, and lasting impression - green pepper skin all the way. This is the risk one takes in ordering a coffee stout. The only other time I had this experience was with Lagunitas Cappuccino stout. Oh well, might be worth a shot another day perhaps.

Pour black but clear as I catch and orange hue at the edge of the glass. Chocolate head of foam that lasts well. Slight clinging. Nose is roasty. Lots of bold coffee and out of the fridge the lactose is like a stiff taffy sweetness. Brown sugar or light caramel. Almost no hops except for a cool minty breath that suggests tree bark. Faint chocolate and tootsie rolls.

taste is silky and lots of coffee. Plenty of roasty malt but I am not tasting any sweetness cream. Hops give a lasting bitter but no herbal. Low fruitiness. This beer is medium dry and moderately roasty. I am not tasting anything milky or creamy though until the swallow. Then it simply lays out a bit. A very light creamy flavor. It finishes the beer softly and medium dry. Medium full, moderate carbonation. Pkgd 2/1/17 these hops are fresh enough to show me pepper at the very end.

Although coffee’s not my thing, it’s somewhat palatable in this mix. Black with nice billowy beige head. Coffee is at the forefront in the aroma, but taste is nice mix of the coffee and roast grains. Silky smooth texture, heavy mouthfeel.,

Elysian Split Shot

Appearance: Elysian’s milk stout pours a Coca-Cola looking dark brown/black color, minus the head (which is minimal and khaki colored) and obvious carbonation. There are alcohol legs here, which is shocking considering the low ABV. The lacing is pretty average and has decent retention on the glass. Overall, this looks like a pretty basic stout.

Aroma: The aroma is very one-note: coffee, coffee, and more coffee. There is a nice roasted quality there, as expected, along with a slight sweetness from the lactose. Dark fruits are suggested, but are not prominent at all. There are also suggestions of cocoa beans and baker’s chocolate.

Taste: The taste mostly follows the nose, minus a lot of what little complexity there was to begin with. This basically tastes like carbonated, creamed coffee. There is very little sweetness, a nice creaminess, and coffee bitterness, but not much else. There just is not enough going on here to really give it anything more than slightly above average marks.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is far too prominent to mesh with the rest of the flavors. It just feels odd to have carbonated coffee. There mouthfeel is too thin, as well. A higher ABV would probably help this one out a lot, mixed with a more syrupy, stout feel. The lactose is entirely absent here, which usually lends a desirable, creamy texture. Alas, the palate is entirely a miss for this beer. It just does not match the style, and really ruins what good things this beer has going on.

Overall: This beer has a lot of great potential, but it is mostly squandered. The aroma and taste match up well, but are too simplistic to really make for a great beer. This beer is merely good, before factoring in the mouthfeel. It ends up just being a typical, average stout in the end. 13.5/20

Very dark, near black. Off white head and lacing that provides a nice contrast to the beer.

Strange smell. Almost vegetal like celery. Espresso becomes apparent as it warms.

Tastes like an iced latte. Sweetness comes out more as it warms. I actually prefer this stout colder.

Mouthfeel is a little light for a stout, but not bad.

Good coffee stout, but not great.

A: Olive black in the vessel with a huge multi-finger mocha head that was spongy textured and moderately lasting. Large coverage of lace on the glass with minor windows of visibility.

S: Aroma of powdered milk, dry chocolate, chalky, with some dry grains of moderate strength. Wish the aroma could of been more fresh and bigger. Semi-sweet notes of creamer coffee but not much in the way of espresso.

T: Flavor was chalky, creamer laced dry chocolate, pretty big flavorwise. Sweet, powdery milk chocolate and cocoa with some big mention of fresh, wet espresso grounds mid-palate that finishes dry.

M: Malty mouthful, that turned frothy with creamer like texture and edgy carbonation and dry chocolate leave.

O: Overall the espresso nature starts to pick up with some rich, deep coffee grounds balanced by some minor sweet milk chocoalte notes. Not as sweet per style as many, but the extra rich espresso nature picks up for some of the slack making this somewhat interesting.

Pours dark black. Pretty good lacing - lingers.
Aroma is light coffee. Somewhat sweet.
Taste is light coffee and chocolate. A sweet chocolate flavor lingers, improves a little as it warms.
Mouth feel is on the light side. Carbonation is good.
Overall: this is an interesting brew. Initially, a coffee flavor following by a light sweetness. It is very light for a coffee stout. There are better choices.
