The beer pours a dark amber/red color with a 1/2" offwhite head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a very malty scent that boasts of pale, crystal, and roasted malts. It's a bit sweet with a fair amount of hops. The taste is great. This is very malty beer with good hop character, but not overly hoppy. It goes down so incredibly smooth and finishes with some burnt toffee/caramel notes; very nice. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is the easiest drinking barleywine I've ever had. It's so malty you forget about the alcohol impact. It should dry out with age; a tremendous beer!

Previewed at the brewery. A tasty barley wine. Though served on the cold side in an effort to preserve, it seemed very much like a simple U.K. barley wine. A good amount of barley and assertive use of hops. A very limited edition owing to their difficulty to generate and limited local market, and need to find a way to age. Perhaps after they go through a learning cycle on bottle conditioning.

Bottle vintage dated 2006. Poured into a tulip glass, this beer has a clear deep orange/ruby color with off-white head that dissipates slowly. Assertive hop aroma as well as a hint of the strong alcohol content. Very smooth with malt complexities well blended. Balanced by a reasonable hop bitterness. Tastes more like the U.K. style - not overly hopped. Warming alcohol in the finish. I'll try to let my other 2 bottles age for another couple of years and definitely pick up some more the next time I'm at the brewery.

Pouring a 2010 Vintage bottle of the HERC Barleywine to a SA Snifter glass.
Pours a dark murky creek water brown, with orange and red highlights with a 1 finger head that fades to a nice lace around the glass. Big malts fill the nose, stanky hops follow with dark dank fruits, alcohol soaked raisins, and figs. Caramel notes and bitter toffee found also, very appealing. Great caramel coating on the tongue mixed with an assortment of dark fruits and grains. Deep and rich with a nice alcohol burn on the finish, prefect for these cold winter nights. Full bodied, medium carbonation, sweet and dry. Overall, man, im not "homing" this beer what so ever, its fantastic! I love it, hoppy, malty, fruity, desirable, and decadent, what more could you want in a barleywine, 2 thumbs up.

A: [3.75] Deep red colored beer. Looks like blood in a glass (well a little thinner than that). Forms 1/2 a finger of off white head that is gone right away. The bottle lists lots of info IBU (76), ABV (9.5%) and there is a born on date 11/7/15.
S: [3.75] For a 9.5% beer I expected a lot of aroma and maybe some alcohol. There is no alcohol on the nose (until it really warms up). I mostly get toffee and caramel on the nose - but it is kind of subdued.
T: [4.00] Caramel, toffee, bready malts.
M: [4.50] Velvety and smooth. Really nice on the palette. Low carbonation leads to a smoother feel. There are some hints of the alcohol but nothing jarring. It has a relatively short finish with no lingering flavors.
O: [4.00] Wow. Very pleasantly surprised. I have had barelywines before and assumed that I would not like this beer. It sat in the back of the fridge for quite a while. This beer is smooth and caramely and delicious. I really enjoyed it. The body plays well with the flavoring to deliver a creamy dessert type beer. This would be great to sip with cheesecake or other sweet desserts. This is a winner in my book!
