Carefully selected dark malts with delicate roasting aromas give ERDINGER Dunkel its full-bodied flavor and strong character.
This elegant wheat beer has a lustrous, deep dark-brown appearance in the glass. The first sip reveals a harmonious symphony of carefully selected wheat and barley malts with exquisite Hallertau aroma hops. The taste buds detect hints of caramel, nuts and fresh bread. An unmistakable top-fermenting accent is provided by ERDINGER’s traditional yeast.
ERDINGER Dunkel first saw the light of day in 1989, when ERDINGER’s master brewers created a dark wheat beer as a birthday present for the private brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach. He liked it so much that he decided to put it on the market in 1990.

500 mL bottle, poured into an Erdinger weizen glass at cellar temperature.
Best before date: August.2011
Appearance- Pours a murky dark dark brown colour, looks almost like swamp water, and almost completely opaque but it does illuminate a little once held up to a light. Average pour yielded a nice soapy two fingers of off white head that very quickly dissipates to a tiny little few bubbles of a ring leaving almost no lacing throughout the glass.
Smell- bready and malty right off the bat and a touch of yeast as well, slight hints of dark chocolate with a nice fruity undertone in there as well.
Taste- Is a lot like the smell, dominated by a nice bready malt flavour and you can definitely taste the yeast in there as well. The chocolate somewhat comes through but not as strong as in the nose, the fruity flavours are there in the taste, maybe banana I’m thinking? Does finish rather sweet as well with a nice hint of toffee in there.
Mouthfeel- Light to medium bodied, has very high carbonation but still finishes smooth and crisp on the palate.
Overall- When I first tried this one I loved it a little more, but now as my palate is growing more refined it doesn’t hit the same notes that it once did, although don’t get me wrong this is still a very quality wheat beer and probably one of my favourites. It is still one of my go to’s when in search of a good wheat beer but it’s just not in the same high regard it once was when I first started trying new beers.

A great example of the Dunkel style and now my favorite Dunkel. Looks like a Dunkel, tasted great, nice kick at 5.3. had the .5L in a can poured in a glass. Will be buying more.

I was hesitant to try this one for some reason, but now is the day I finally try it. Poured up into a pint glass at about 45F. Pours cloudy brown with a thick and creamy head that stays for a surprisingly long time. Smell is faint with grain and caramel, but overall very pleasing. Taste is caramel and cream of wheat, with a very subtle and slightly toasted sugary finish. Mouthfeel is creamy, medium bodied, and alcohol is very difficult to detect. Overall, it's much better than I thought it might be.
Edit: This has come into my regular rotation. It's an under-rated brew!

11.2oz brown bottle
Erdinger Weissbrau Dunkel has an opaque dark brown [almost black] body. A nice 2-finger bubbly tan head held well but produced limited lacing. The aroma is dominated by dark malts; dark toast, and caramel. The taste matches the aroma however, adds banana, chocolate, and is nutty. Mouth feel is medium, a little creamy with a nice carbonation.
Overall, it is an easy drinking and flavorful Dunkelweizen.

Deep brown body with a huge, rocky, long lasting beige head along with good lacing. Sweet, malty aroma of caramel, crusty bread and nuts. Sweetness carries over in the taste without the typical phenols (banana and clove for example) associated with the style. A bit of vanilla in the aftertaste. Softly carbonated, medium bodied mouthfeel.

500 ml can. 5.3 abv, pours wonderful in Benediktiner Weissen glass. Light carbonation, small fine bubbles, appearance of an Irish Coffee. Cloudy and pretty acorn bronw-redish. 3 finger foamy head, dissolving a bit fast. Smell, caramel, bit of chocolate and currants. very much like dark grape currants.
Taste, currants at first, bitter dark sweet chocolate in the aftertaste.
Very smooth and drinkable.
Roasted malt adds really something special.
Prefer this above a stout any day.
Yet the sweetness is not quite for me.
