Notes / Commercial Description:
Carefully selected dark malts with delicate roasting aromas give ERDINGER Dunkel its full-bodied flavor and strong character.

This elegant wheat beer has a lustrous, deep dark-brown appearance in the glass. The first sip reveals a harmonious symphony of carefully selected wheat and barley malts with exquisite Hallertau aroma hops. The taste buds detect hints of caramel, nuts and fresh bread. An unmistakable top-fermenting accent is provided by ERDINGER’s traditional yeast.

ERDINGER Dunkel first saw the light of day in 1989, when ERDINGER’s master brewers created a dark wheat beer as a birthday present for the private brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach. He liked it so much that he decided to put it on the market in 1990.

From a 500ml bottle served almost straight from the fridge at 11 degrees Celsius into a weizen glass. Best before date: 04/2018.

Look: The beer pours a cloudy dark brown with 8cm of dense, mousse-like, tan head that settles into a thick cap in 6-ish minutes. Poor lacing but overall very persistent head and a great-looking beer.

Smell: Faint and sweet. Simply not enough strength even as it warms. After some vigorous swirling I've settled on dark malts with faint esters = banana bread. The idea of hops is there. Boo.

Taste: Thankfully the flavour comes across a medium strength and with good balance. Notes of wheat and toast with an estery banana and low hop character. I'm barely getting any phenols... not enough to make them count.

Feel: Medium-full body with lively carbonation. Creamy yet prickly. No apparent alcohol

Overall: Excellent-looking brew with a good mouthfeel but dang it fails to deliver in terms of aroma and flavour. It barely smells like anything and the flavour – while with more presence than the smell – is still really boring. I checked my senses by shoving my nose into a bag of cacao nibs and consuming a handful just to make sure it's not my nose and taste buds – it wasn't. Lackluster I'm afraid... and to think I remember liking this at some point.

From a bottle, pours as murky dark brown with a thick one-finger beige head. Mild aroma of cloves, grain and yeast. Taste is mostly sweetness of malt and caramel with light bready and wheat flavors. Overall, very refreshing with bright carbonation.

Clean and refreshing beer, with moderate depth. The best, in my opinion, of Erdinger's beers.

Pours a dark brown which lets a little red light through. Smells of chocolate, roasted wheat, and coffee. Tastes of milk chocolate, wheat, and coffee. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Overall this is a very tasty dunkel that I would definitely have again.

Brownish, off white frothy head. Spare lacing.
Moderate malt aroma, pumpernickel bread. Low level banana aroma.
Moderate malt flavor. Bubble gum notes.
Medium-light body, very high carbonation, watery, dry finish.

Lacks of flavor

Love the rich dark color and the smell is light but very good. Not a strong flavor but I expected a lighter taste from previous dunkels that I have had. It goes down way too easy and at 5.3 ABV I could handle a few of these 11.2 ouncers. I will buy this again when I find it. At Ron's Corner Tavern in a bottle best by 12-2017.

From the bottle, it pours a hazy brown with a nice, weissbier like head. Scent is modest, with a touch of yeast and some malt. The mouth revels in the lightly roasted bread flavor. Yum!
