Notes / Commercial Description:
Carefully selected dark malts with delicate roasting aromas give ERDINGER Dunkel its full-bodied flavor and strong character.

This elegant wheat beer has a lustrous, deep dark-brown appearance in the glass. The first sip reveals a harmonious symphony of carefully selected wheat and barley malts with exquisite Hallertau aroma hops. The taste buds detect hints of caramel, nuts and fresh bread. An unmistakable top-fermenting accent is provided by ERDINGER’s traditional yeast.

ERDINGER Dunkel first saw the light of day in 1989, when ERDINGER’s master brewers created a dark wheat beer as a birthday present for the private brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach. He liked it so much that he decided to put it on the market in 1990.

Poured pint bottle into weizen glass. Monstrous, long-lingering beige head. Murky brown color.

Yeasty nose from the foam.

Tastes of muted caramel, some bitterness on the back end.

Medium dryness on the mouth, though not in the throat. A little watery.

Overall taste is a little muted, but it's a nice subtle type of cocoa wheat, and drinks well. Kind of beer that pairs amazingly well with food.

Smell has a nice malty smell to it, with scents of cloves and other spices. Taste is very smooth, very much like a malty Hefeweizen with a slight chocolate taste mixed in. Very little bitter taste in this beer at all, overall it is well balanced, has a good level of carbonation, and at the end has a faint aftertaste but not too dry.

This isn't the first time I have bought this beer, and will certainly will not be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer-- it is like crossing a good quality hefeweizen with the stronger tastes of a doppelbock. I consider this a sleeper beer-- I can easily find this beer, and when the more popular brands like Weihenstephan, Paulaner, etc. are out of stock at the local store, this is the beer I will grab.....

It looked very good. Smell was appealing. Taste was good. Not high carbonation and no strong alcohol taste. It says wheat beer, but I did not think it tasted like a wheat beer. I do not particularly like most Wheat beers, so the fact that this one didn't taste like a Wheat beer definitely helped increase my rating.
