Notes / Commercial Description:
Carefully selected dark malts with delicate roasting aromas give ERDINGER Dunkel its full-bodied flavor and strong character.

This elegant wheat beer has a lustrous, deep dark-brown appearance in the glass. The first sip reveals a harmonious symphony of carefully selected wheat and barley malts with exquisite Hallertau aroma hops. The taste buds detect hints of caramel, nuts and fresh bread. An unmistakable top-fermenting accent is provided by ERDINGER’s traditional yeast.

ERDINGER Dunkel first saw the light of day in 1989, when ERDINGER’s master brewers created a dark wheat beer as a birthday present for the private brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach. He liked it so much that he decided to put it on the market in 1990.

Love the rich dark color and the smell is light but very good. Not a strong flavor but I expected a lighter taste from previous dunkels that I have had. It goes down way too easy and at 5.3 ABV I could handle a few of these 11.2 ouncers. I will buy this again when I find it. At Ron's Corner Tavern in a bottle best by 12-2017.

From the bottle, it pours a hazy brown with a nice, weissbier like head. Scent is modest, with a touch of yeast and some malt. The mouth revels in the lightly roasted bread flavor. Yum!

Pours a deep brown, with a tan head of, frankly, ridiculous size. Minimal smell, slightly boozy, metallic, and fruity. Flavors of dark, roasted grains, fruit, a hint of root beet, and a surprising booziness for 5.3%. Smooth, and all around good beer.

On tap at Wolff's Biergarten in Albany, NY.

This one pours a dark golden amber, with a small head, and a good amount of sticky lacing.

Smells like slight dusty caramel, cocoa powder, spicy wheat, and fruity yeast.

This is really quite solid, and everything you want a dunkel to be. It's got a nice deep maltiness to it, more flavor than you'd expect a brew of 5.3% to have. There's a nice caramelized breadiness, a hint of wheaty bitterness, and the classic clovey yeast character.

This is super drinkable, with a good levle of carbonation.

This has to be up there with the best dunkels on the market. Awesome stuff.

Poured pint bottle into weizen glass. Monstrous, long-lingering beige head. Murky brown color.

Yeasty nose from the foam.

Tastes of muted caramel, some bitterness on the back end.

Medium dryness on the mouth, though not in the throat. A little watery.

Overall taste is a little muted, but it's a nice subtle type of cocoa wheat, and drinks well. Kind of beer that pairs amazingly well with food.

Smell has a nice malty smell to it, with scents of cloves and other spices. Taste is very smooth, very much like a malty Hefeweizen with a slight chocolate taste mixed in. Very little bitter taste in this beer at all, overall it is well balanced, has a good level of carbonation, and at the end has a faint aftertaste but not too dry.

This isn't the first time I have bought this beer, and will certainly will not be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this beer-- it is like crossing a good quality hefeweizen with the stronger tastes of a doppelbock. I consider this a sleeper beer-- I can easily find this beer, and when the more popular brands like Weihenstephan, Paulaner, etc. are out of stock at the local store, this is the beer I will grab.....
