Brewed by:
Erdinger Weissbräu

Style: Dunkelweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Carefully selected dark malts with delicate roasting aromas give ERDINGER Dunkel its full-bodied flavor and strong character.

This elegant wheat beer has a lustrous, deep dark-brown appearance in the glass. The first sip reveals a harmonious symphony of carefully selected wheat and barley malts with exquisite Hallertau aroma hops. The taste buds detect hints of caramel, nuts and fresh bread. An unmistakable top-fermenting accent is provided by ERDINGER’s traditional yeast.

ERDINGER Dunkel first saw the light of day in 1989, when ERDINGER’s master brewers created a dark wheat beer as a birthday present for the private brewery’s owner, Werner Brombach. He liked it so much that he decided to put it on the market in 1990.

500 ml. bottle. Dark almost opaque colour, with a average head that does not hold for too long. Smell is wonderful: prunes, dark fruits, toffee, peaches and hints of chocolate. Average body, taste is almost the same as smell, maybe with some roasted grain notes. It was the new 5.3% version.

Had a bottle at a beer parlor in Calgary's Kensington area. This dark wheat offering pours a murky opaque brown, almost like coffee with just the faintest hint of cream mixed in. Aroma was dark malts and hefe yeast all the way, no discernible hops but a decent amount fruit and spice, a bit like pumpkin pie. Palate was big chewy dark malts and yeast phenols, I get a lot of stone fruit (cherry, plum), raisin, and toffee/irish creme flavors with a healthy dose of spicy clove and some toasty notes that are not out of place in the sea of dark malt and yeast. Body is chewy and rich, albeit thinner than a huge doppelbock or the like. The rich malty character and spicy yeast leads the way but there is a decently bitter finish that includes some herbal hops (but you have to look for this) and syrupy booze. Solid German wheat beer albeit more coarse and perhaps "rough around the edges" than some other examples. Would have liked to see the sweet flavors pop out a bit more.

Let me just say that this beer saved the day. After a 2 hour commute from the Bronx to Coney Island and discovering that the Coney Island Brewery was closed due to the hurricane, We (my lover and I) stopped into Coney Island Bar and Grill where we discovered this delicious beer.

Now we may begin.

A- With a good pour this beer may have as big as a 3 finger head. The frothy goodness looks like yogurt when you peep into the top of the glass. It has incredible retention considering it is a wheat beer. Its color is the deepest of ambers... its almost not. If you were sitting at a bar with a glass freshly poured of this one might approach you and say "hey whats that stout you're having?" but then upon realizing you can see to the other side of the bar through the glass they will feel very stupid. lol

s- a bit of caramel and some dark chocolate mousse hit the nose very hard... these notes are ever so closely followed by what I perceive as pizza dough, or old fashioned doughnuts... Leaning more towards pizza dough. The very end has a bit of alcohol and some sweetness almost like raisin bran cereal after the milk has made it semi-soggy.

T- My my, what a concoction of little flavors we have here. Very Wheat beery with small hints of dunkel... pizza dough with black currants and rose hips on the gulp. What a delightful treat this beer is. Dangerously easy to drink; Practically chuggable. The appearance of this beer might definitely fool someone to thinking it is quite chewy and full of coffee, but as a matter of fact it is somewhat delicate tasting and light with much character.

m- Mouthfeel is what you wold expect from a quality wheat beer. I compare it to Franziskaner's weissbier. Lighter on the carbonation and still very drinkable. It is almost hard to believe exactly how refreshing a beer that looks and smells like this can be until you have tried it.

O- Overall I would definitely say this is quite possibly a favorite beer contender, but its availability is far to inadequate for me to enjoy it as a "go-to". If I could describe this beer in one word, that word would be "quaint".

A brown 500ml Euro-Bomber poured into a dimpled glass mug.

Appearance - Ruby black in color. The head disappeared quickly. No lace at all.

Smell - Malt. Sweet. Raisins.

Taste - Malt. Sweet. Raisins.

Mouth - Smooth. Mild carbonation. Pleasant on the pallet.

Overall - This beer isn't much to look at. Also, unlike a good Weissbier, the taste of this beer is fairly one dimensional (malt, minimal hops, no German sour flavor). The beer looks and taste like Dr. Pepper. Weird.
