Very Good
Erdinger Weissbier PikantusErdinger Weissbier Pikantus
Notes: ERDINGER Pikantus is already a legend during the “strong beer season”. But with its complex symphony of aromas, it also stimulates the taste buds – making it a perfect aperitif.

With an ABV of 7.3% and an original wort of 16.7°P, this bock beer is ERDINGER Weissbräu’s strongest contender.

For a true Bavarian aperitif, divide a bottle of ERDINGER Pikantus between two connoisseur glasses – with its dark color and smooth creamy head, Pikantus is already a feast for the eyes. The flavor that develops on the palate is well-rounded and malty with a hint of nutmeg and fine nougat. The sparkling nature of ERDINGER Pikantus harmonizes perfectly with its slightly sweet character, as well as its soft and delicate finish.

L- Veeery deep chestnut brown (might look black by lamplight), pours with 1Cm fine tan head. Stored and poured carefully, despite which it is cloudy, and there is much accreted sediment left in the bottom of the bottle.
S- Surprisingly low smell for a robust looking beer, maybe just some very light grains.
T- Deeply malty/toasty, then rich verging on somewhat sweet, with a punchy alcohol tang into the finish.
F- As above, and I think this needs to be served well chilled, even then it's a bit sweet.
O- I was surprised and happy to find this in Waitrose London at £2.20/500ml for a 7.3% Erdinger, visions of clearing their shelf... But on trying it I'm left underwhelmed. I don't sense the noted nutmeg at all, or FWIW any other spice. It's a bit too rich/sweet for me, but lacks character to carry that off. Sadly I don't see myself bothering to buy this again. - I'm very surprised, esp. having lived in Germany before, drunk a legion's fill of their beer over years to find this from one of their main breweries...
I'll pay a bit more and stick to the current super-impressive multi-dimensional higher-end offerings from Fullers, Greene King and Martsons, all also currently stocked at Waitrose.

Pours smoothly and immediately gives rise to an inch+ of tiny-bubbled head that is quick to dissipate. Color is a solid brown that shows a beautiful caramel at its edge.

Not a lot in the nose: subtle nuttiness, chocolate, raisin. Flavors are very middle of the road & banced in their intensity: milky chocolate, lightly spiced fruits (apricot, raisin -- things ready to go into a rum cake).

Mouth feel is silky smooth. Very easy drinking for a dark beer; not heavy at all.

Look: Milk chocolate brown, mildly hazy. Half a finger of off-white head with short retention.

Smell: Spicy and fruity with some sourness.

Taste: Sweet, yeasty bread dough. No bitterness at all.

Mouthfeel: Full and chewy, immediately overtaken by extremely strong and sharp carbonation.

Overall: Like the beer your D&D character orders, with a nearly painful amount of carbonation out of the bottle.

Pours dark mahogany with some caramel edges and dark amber hues when held to light. Large fluffy light tan head dissipates very slowly leaving some nice lacing. Aroma is wheat, mild fruity esters, floral and subtle spicy hops. Only very subtle caramel, no real dark fruits. Taste is a bit more caramel forward, dry on the finish, Nobel hop bitterness, with a pretty prominent minerality. Fruity esters are mild, and not much phenolic spice at all. Mouthfeel is medium body, it’s incredibly easy to drink. Overall, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this beer but it does lack to depth and complexity when compared to the other bock-style beers I’ve had this weekend.

Tan two finger pillowy head with a pinky tinge. Dark brown body with a pinky tinge also. Smell is of fruits and sugar.
Taste is fruity, wheaty, brown bread, spicy and sweet with a little warming alcohol. Medium carbonation, quite a thick full body. It's a very tasty beer.

500 mL bottle, the last remaining from an Erdinger mixed pack I bought at the LCBO in late 2019. "Best before end" Jun 2020 and served at cellar temperature.

Pours a deep, clear ruddy copper-brown colour - it's effervescent and quite heady, sporting nearly two inches of puffy, light buff-coloured foam that gradually seeps away over the course of the next ten minutes, give or take. A creamy, quarter-inch cap and collar are the eventual remnants; not much lace, but it still looks pretty darn good in a tall weizen glass. Interesting nose - grainy pale malts and bready wheat figure in strongly, paired up with notes of raisin, fig, caramel, molasses and overripe banana. Smells rich and saccharine, with hints of ethanol, clove spice and a slight metallicity.

Wow that's smooth, with almost no sign of the 7.3%. I'm tasting molasses and caramelized sugar, as well as toasted bread, wheaty grains and a mixture of dark fruit flavours, including fig and raisin - there's even a hint of chocolate milk coming through by mid-sip, presumably related to the roasted malts. Banana, brown sugar, dark fruit and molasses carry on through a sweet, yeasty, weakly boozy finish with faint suggestions of clove; it concludes similarly, though the aftertaste fades surprisingly quickly for such an otherwise robust beer. Medium-full in body, with the carbonation quickly exhausting itself, resulting in a silky-smooth, rather satisfying mouthfeel that complements its moderately sweet nature.

Final Grade: 4.04, an A-. Some of my favourite beers of all time are weizenbocks... yet unfortunately, it's a style that has never been particularly well-represented locally, especially in terms of quantity. Case in point: more than two years have passed since I last happened upon a new one to review... and while we're counting, it's been at least twice that long since I've sampled a new, top notch, authentic German-made one. I don't think Pikantus is anywhere near the pinnacle of this style, but it's an undoubtedly unique example that I thoroughly enjoyed. Well worth trying if you can find it - a product Erdinger has every right to be proud of.

A good weizen-bock. The flavors blend well with the ABV.

Bottle conditioned. Dark chestnut with a thick well maintained and dense beige head.
Subdued creamy malt and dark autumn fruit aroma.
Somewhat sweet in flavour similar to crème brulee toffee.
Mid body and feel. Mild fizz.
I expected more flavour.

Pours a darker brown color, appears clear when held up to the light. Huge pillowy off-white head dissipates steadily leaving a thin layer of spotty tan foam on top of the beer.

Aroma is somewhat subdued with notes of clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, wheat, some bready malts.

Taste follows the nose with lots of cloves, cinnamon and some peppery notes up front. Bready malts coupled with dark fruits that have a slight sweetness to them.

Feel is spritzy with a vibrant carbonation. Semi-dry on the finish. Smooth, medium bodied.

Overall a lovely beer.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a wheat beer glass.
L: Lovely, glossy, dark hickory colour. Big, foaming, tan head is long-lasting.
S: Disappointing. Not much there.
T: Sweet, rich and malty. Brown bread, molasses, dark treacle, plum pudding. Some alcohol heat.
F: Foaming mouthfeel becomes satisfyingly sticky.
