Very Good
Erdinger Weissbier PikantusErdinger Weissbier Pikantus
Notes: ERDINGER Pikantus is already a legend during the “strong beer season”. But with its complex symphony of aromas, it also stimulates the taste buds – making it a perfect aperitif.

With an ABV of 7.3% and an original wort of 16.7°P, this bock beer is ERDINGER Weissbräu’s strongest contender.

For a true Bavarian aperitif, divide a bottle of ERDINGER Pikantus between two connoisseur glasses – with its dark color and smooth creamy head, Pikantus is already a feast for the eyes. The flavor that develops on the palate is well-rounded and malty with a hint of nutmeg and fine nougat. The sparkling nature of ERDINGER Pikantus harmonizes perfectly with its slightly sweet character, as well as its soft and delicate finish.

Pours opaque, dark brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is dark wheat, clove, raisin, and chocolate. Medium bodied and carbonation, sweet. Several other weizenbocks I prefer. Above average but will not get again. Too sweet.

500ml bottle, part of a new mixed-pack from Erdinger now available in Alberta.

This beer pours a dark, very murky brown colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy beige head, which leaves a bit of low-lying coastal vista lace around the glass as it eventually seeps away.

It smells of bready, doughy caramel malt, wet banana chips, ethereal savoury spice, a touch of dry, flaky chocolate, faintly spicy wheat grain, and soft earthy, floral, and slightly weedy hops. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy caramel malt, a still second-class gritty wheatiness, banana bread, toffee candies, understated bittersweet chocolate, muddled dark orchard fruit, very tame earthy spice, and a genial weedy, leafy, and floral noble hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite active in its more fizzy than frothy wanderings, the body on the light side of medium weight, and mostly smooth, the heretofore sneaky alcohol finally coming onto the scene. It finishes off-dry, the lingering caramel and wheat doing well to push aside any spice, yeast, fruit, or yes, booze.

A pretty tasty and engaging Weizenbock, the grand uptick in ABV hardly noticeable in the least, while the other sundry players punch in, punch out, and all is well. Worthy of a go, even if it means having to get yet another one of those basic Erdinger weizen glasses in the deal - no worries, it makes a nice gift to your beergeek-aspiring friends.

Picked up a bottle of this for $3.75 in Helen, GA while there for the 2008 Oktoberfest celebration. 500 ml bottle with a Best Before date of 10/2008 poured into a Weizen glass.

Pours a hazy, deep mahogany with a finger-and-a-half of tan foam, which settles rather slowly and leaves behind very little lacing.

Spicy aromas fill the nose, with a bit of sweet malt and a whiff of banana mixed in as well.

Full in body with a nice, tingly carbonation. Sweet malt flavors introduce themselves the brew to the palate, with varied spicy notes and a touch of hop bitterness--along with a slight bit of boozy alcohol as the beer warms--follow in the middle, finally finishing with a sweetness that is neither overbearing nor overtly long-lasting.

On the palate, this is a nice big, balanced Weizenbock, with a rich body and full flavors, and it's just as heavy on the head, leaving it in the one-to-two beer company, with much more than that going overboard. Overall a delicious sipper, and one that becomes much more balanced, palatable, complex, and even stronger as it warms.

A: The pour is an opaque dark amber-brown with a billowing tan colored head with excellent retention.

S: The nose is the ever typical German yeast esters of banana and clove. A very strong bread note, it's actually similar to a dark rye bread, maybe even a pumpernickel. There is a fair amount of yeast aroma in and of itself, as well.

T: The flavor is mildly sweet with the banana notes slowly creeping in. A minimal spice note of clove and cinnamon. Some hints of dark fruit (mostly raisins) are there too. The sweetness is not all that pronounced and rather than caramel, I get more of a molasses sort of note.

M: The body is medium with a smooth, creamy carbonation.

D: Not my favorite weizenbock, but it was cheap and one I hadn't tried before. Reasonably drinkable, though.

From bottle, pours a copper colored slightly cloudy with a large and lasting tan head. Aroma Sweet, malty and grainy with ripe banana, wheat, some dark fruits, some clove. Smooth texture with a big sweet mouth feel. Flavor of clove, malt, wheat, dark fruits, syrup, herbs. Lingering sweet ripe banana and caramel. Very nice.

500 ml bootle from Germany

Pours dark brown with large off-white head that soon dissapears, the small rising carbonation bubbles create kind of prickly surface, no lacing. Aroma is very strong fruity esters, mostly wild berries, especially raspberries that are dominating mild malty smell.

Taste is a bit spicy sweet malt, lots of dark dried fruit, alos a little bit of astringency. Mouthfeel is smooth medium with average carbonation and very light alcohol warming.

Overall, an excellent beer. This is my first Weizenbock and I have to say I have had a very, very good first impression.

A - Poured a dark brown, almost black. Big tan head with small bubbles. An attractive glass of beer.

S - Not a whole heap of smell to this beer, some caramel and a little ethanol. I may have served this beer a little too cold for the smells to come through properly.

T - Very nice. While the beer was underwhelming to start (probably for due to temperature) there was some clear caramel flavour and a bit of chocolate coming through. As the beer warmed up these flavours became more pronounced and some wheat and ethanol flavours came through. There was also some yeast on the back of the beer.

M - Highly carbonated start. Later the beer felt much richer and thicker. It was really nice and creamy. Really very good.

D - This packs quite a punch at 7.3% ABV so I'm not going to be drinking these all day though it was very enjoyable.

Pours very cloudy and thick, almost impossible to see through.
Smells nice, spicy. The taste is complex, the pepper flavour striking at first, then mixing with a more fruity feeling and caramel.
The alcohol content makes its presence felt.
Recommended cold.
In point of view, a very good dark bock beer.

Appearance -- Pikantus pours a dark, dark russet-brown into my .5-liter weizen glass. As is my preference with wheat beers, I swirled the residual yeast into the glass; the beer was already pretty opaque, though. A nice weizen pour yields a three-finger, khaki/cream-colored head that fades relatively quickly into a pleasant little cap for the remainder of drinking. Lacing is minimal.

Smell -- Sweet, dried fruits dominate the nose, but they're more than matched by a potent alcohol aroma. Yeasty and wheaty smells are obviously there, along with a hint of roastiness, but the alcohol really stands out.

Taste -- This reminds me of a marginally lighter-bodied, not-quite-as-cohesive version of Aventinus (the closest possible point of reference)...but with a powerful alcoholic punch. Even as the glass warms, the alcohol retains equal prominence with the dried-fruit flavors, and it nearly overpowers the toasted German malt. The wheaty "twang" I expect is completely lost in the alcohol. Interesting, given that this beer's ABV is lower than that of Aventinus.

Mouthfeel -- Like a heavier dunkelweizen; not as "creamy" as Aventinus. Carbonation is crisp and prickly, which works to great effect with the dried-fruit flavors. I feel like the alcohol thins out the perceived mouthfeel, though.

Drinkability -- Pretty good, although you really notice the alcohol from the first sip. This is a heavy wheat beer, so it's rather filling (but still refreshing, especially when paired with the pork-and-prosciutto meal I enjoyed with it). All told, I think this is a good example of the style, but I have a feeling it would benefit significantly from extended aging. To me, even Aventinus gets better with extra time for the flavors to coalesce and the alcohol to cool down.

I hope to review this beer again once I've cellared a bottle or two for a while.
