Erdinger Weissbräu
Very Good
Notes: Fans of down-to-earth beers will love smooth ERDINGER Urweisse.

With its distinctive top-fermenting beer profile and strong yeasty flavor, Urweisse is a truly traditional Bavarian wheat beer specialty.

The soft initial taste is accompanied by malted wheat and caramel flavors mixed with hints of clove, banana and yeast. This is followed by a lingering finish of sun-ripened aroma hops from the Hallertau region. Urweisse contains slightly more carbon dioxide than other ERDINGER Weissbier – making it a lively taste sensation.

The recipe dates back to the brewery's founding days in 1886. The bottle and nostalgic label also awake memories of days gone by. This smooth wheat beer specialty tastes best when served in its own specially developed, hand-blown glass.

500 mL bottle from a gift pack picked up at the LCBO; best before Jun 2019 and served barely chilled. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a cloudy, brassy golden hue, crowned with a lofty inch of lumpy, sparkling white foam that gives up its ground at a very casual pace. By the five minute mark, it has dropped down to a creamy quarter-inch cap, thicker near the collar where it merges with a modest band of lace. Good looking hefe. The aroma verges upon a banana bread bomb, with overripe, bruised banana esters and a firm bready, wheaty malt sweetness sliding into the star roles; meanwhile, the bit parts are filled in by yeasty clove spice, orange citrus and a peppery note.

Tastes along the same lines as the nose - bready, grainy malts and wheat are dominant, with bruised banana slipping into a comfortable second place. Orange peel begins to come through by mid-sip, followed by a spicy, yeasty back end with clove, nutmeg, and more banana bread sweetness fading into a yeasty aftertaste. Medium-full in body - satisfying weight on the tongue, but it's aggressively over-carbonated - I do like a good, crisp bite from my hefes, but this one just froths and foams up in the mouth (at least initially), which gets old quick. Thankfully, it does soften out eventually, at which point this beer became much more enjoyable to sip.

Final Grade: 3.95, a B+. Urweisse is easily the best Erdinger beer I've had so far... although I can't speak too soon, as there's still that bottle of Pikantus waiting for me in the cellar. Truthfully, I have never been a big fan of this brewery's products - their dunkel is fine I guess, but I'd take literally any other German-made hefe over their mainline weisse. But if this Urweisse was available on a regular basis, I'd probably have given this company a lot more of my money over the years, because it's a perfectly fine weissbier, up there with names like Paulaner and the like. Thumbs up.

Hazy dark gold with a large, dimpled head. Wheaty Belgian yeast nose. Pleasant full wheat body with more spicy Belgian yeast finishing crisp and off-dry. Lovely.

Pours slightly misty rich gold with beautiful rich head 4cm that collapses down eventually to about 1cm cream. Aroma - yeasty banana. Taste - clove and banana but subtle, well balanced, not overwhelming. Rich lingering mouthfeel.

Pours a crystal clear copper tinged orange color. Thick velvety white head dissipates somewhat but maintains a nice one to two finger head.

Aroma has notes of clove, citrus - mostly a light orange aroma, a hint of spice and lots of wheat.

Taste has notes of wheat, clove and citrus with some pepper and bready malt notes. This particular bottle is old and there are certain oxidation/cardboard notes that aren't great, but I am not going to dock the beer for them since I knew this was an old bottle going in.

Feel is light to medium bodied, but very drinkable. Vibrant vivacious carbonation.

Overall a nice Hefe - I'd love to find this fresher but even past its prime it was quite good.

Beautiful peachy orange body. Cloudy and vibrant. Pillowy, soapy, rocky 3 finger head dissipates slowly leaving a thin cap and ring.
Wheaty aroma with cooked green apples and faint clove.
Slight wheat and grain taste with some green apple sourness and touch of lemon zest and clove in the finish. Notes of honey hear and there, along with some yeasty bread.
Medium body and medium high carbonation. Smooth mouth feel and very clean.

Beer pours a cloudy deep yellow almost orange color with a large white head. The smell has citrus notes and clove. The flavor is slightly sweet citrus crisp and clean but a little more carbonated than I prefer. Overall not as good as Celebrator but still a darn good beer.

Appearance: Hazy yellow-gold, huge head.

Smell: Apple pie, then sweet with cloves.

Taste: Lemony, bready, a little spicy. Kind of a sour note.

Overall: Beer #3 from the sampler. All the beers were over 12 months old, I'm reviewing anyway as 95% of the German imports here are at least that old. This one is the first that the age may have gotten the better of it. Smelled great, tasted like their standard hefe but with a sour note.

Pours a giant white, spongy head with a murky amber color to it.

Smells of an interesting mix, featuring ripe banana, dried leaves and a spicy clove note. Dough bread underneath with a whiff of tart sourness to it.

Every ingredient in this aims for the most possible refreshment and is perfectly in tune with the other flavors. Amped up by a vivid, soft carbonation, a pleasant complexity shines through at all times, providing a smooth mouthfeel.

Tastes of dried citrus peel, grass, white bread and a gentle yeast softness, which ties everything in this together. A stony mineral quality comes up after the swallow, accompanied by sugared yeast dough, transforming into wheat, wild honey and well water.

Very clean on the tongue, truly refreshing and well balanced. An easy drinkery which is perfect for the warmer days, being able to produce a depth of flavors within its yeast softness which makes this truly great.

Serving Type: 500 mL Bottle served in a Erdinger Weissbier glass

A- Pours a hazy burnt orange with a gigantic fluffy cream white head that has incredible retention. Died down to a 1/2 finger after 2 or 3 minutes and stayed that way long enough for me to finish the beer without it going away. Thick lacing.

S- Banana, bubblegum, cloves, and a hint of citrus.

T- Much like the aroma: Banana, cloves, Bubblegum, and orange peel (as opposed to the fruit in the smell). Orange rind like bitterness on the finish.

M- Medium body and moderate-high carbonation. Slightly oily mouthfeel.

O- Pretty good Hefeweizen, although not as good as the standard Erdinger (in my opinion). Flavour doesn't exactly hold up as the beer warms.

500ml bottle, one very much like the same now employed by Ayinger for its Ur-Weisse. Another brew available in the current Erdinger mixed pack.

This beer pours a hazy, medium copper amber hue, with a teeming, almost vessel-filling tower of puffy, frothy, and rather creamy off-white head, which leaves some wild cannonball splash lace around the glass as it slowly sinks out of sight.

It smells of banana cream, phenolic yeast, semi-sweet wheat malt, a further biscuity graininess, soft white pepper and clove spice, and subtle earthy, floral, and leafy hops. The taste is still fairly sweet, with the wet banana chip fruitiness predominating, over a blended wheat and grainy pale maltiness, a bit of shy earthy spice wafting about, kind of clammy yeast, and more well understated floral and leafy noble hops.

The carbonation is quite active in its swirling and testy, fizzy and frothy emanations, the body an adequate middleweight, and generally smooth, with a wee airy creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the banana character falling back, while the mixed malt sweetness puts 'er in cruise control.

Not a bad wheat beer, just a little simple and plain overall, the spice too restrained, and the sweetness a little pandering at times. Overall, easy to drink, and with a lower ABV than the norm, so patio-friendly enough, I suppose, if you have the chance to enjoy this one that way.

This beer pours a bit of a darker colour than the standard Erdinger. The smell immediately lets you know that this effort from Erdinger is a different beast altogether. Very spicy and clove like. Tastes just how it smells. Spicy, strong clove again. Really nice. Mouthfeel reminds me of Weihenstephaner although in fact I think this has a little more going on taste wise.

Tonight this hit the spot perfectly, I definitely recommend it.

Pours a hazy orange that turns to a red in thicker spots of Erdinger glass. Yeast chunks in it, but hoping no issues on taste. Ben there before on Weiss. Typical creamy white head. Banana bread and citrus fruit smell. Shared than other Weiss. Definite clove. Taste is wonderful. Banana orange with malty yeast finish. A carbonic burst assists taste and texture. Smooth refreshing finish. Another great German beer makes me want to go!!

Pours a big foamy head on a cloudy straw body.
The aroma is muted lemon and earthy. Nice.
The taste starts with mild lemon bitter, watery, a little spice and finishes with a mild lemon bitterness.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
It doesn't have a lot of flavor but not bad.

It's tough to rate this bier because I'm drinking it directly after having a bottle of Kuchlbauer Weisse and the Kuchlbauer Weisse is just better! Without the comparison, this is a solid weissbier that's actually edging towards a dunkel in taste and colour. With the comparison, it has a creaminness the Kuchlbauer doesn't have but much less taste. If I had the choice on a hot day, I'd be drinking the Kuchlbauer Weisse. Given that I'm drinking in Autumn, though, and this is a thicker brew, I'd be pretty content knocking a few more of these back and enjoy myself doing it. The best way to describe the beer is to say it's got the body of the Weihenstephaner but without the intense flavours! Well worth drinking, nonetheless!

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 15A). Bottle 50 cl - Batch L211107. AROMA: wheat malt profile dominates. low to no esters (bubblegum and banana). some yeast aroma. APPEARANCE: light amber color and hazy. slight ivory average head with good retention. FLAVOR: strong wheat profile with some bready yeast notes. none to very faint esters or phenols. PALATE: medium-light body and high carbonation. OVERALL: a weizen that lacks the traditional aromas of banana and vanilla.

50 cl bottle (bb 04-2015) into a weizen. Hazy deep golden color, three finger white foam head that settled down pretty quickly, very little lacing, constant bubbling. Wheat and banana on the nose. Sweet first taste is followed by a taste of tart wheat with some spice and a note of banana. Dry, wheaty and a little watery aftertaste that lasts for some time. Fresh taste. Medium mouthfeel, stingy carbonation, a little bit more carbonated than the weizens i've had. Overall a good, light, weizen with some taste in it. Would suit a hot day very well, even though i've had better.

500ml bottle served in a Weizen glass.

A: Pour a nice orange hazy color forming a traditional big and creamy weissbier white head. Good retention and lots of lacings formed and left in the glass

S: Sweet and fruity. Strong notes of sweet malts and wheat. Traditional notes of banana esters and clove. Bready and a bit earthy. Very light notes of flowery hops

T: Slightly sweet start. Notes of sweet malts, wheat, banana and clove. Very bready taste. Maybe a bit too mild taste of malts

M: Very smooth and creamy nevertheless, light body. Medium carbonation. Bready aftertaste

O: Great drinkability. Easydrinking as a German Weissbier has to be. Practically no bitterness (as expected). Good

Best by March 2014

Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow color with a huge white bubbly head, fades at a decent rate but takes awhile because of the amount, oddly no lacing whatsoever though.

Smell has a bit of a weird yeasty funk to it, slight hint of grassiness and clove.

Taste is definitely heavy handed on the yeast front with a bit of an off flavor, reminds me of drinking an unfiltered wheat beer but that every sip is part of the dregs, clove adds some spiciness to the mix to help distract, carbonation is medium-high but closer to the medium range, finishes quite dry.

500ml bottle. Weizen glass. Bright brass color, foggy appearance. Close, sticky, lasting, white in color crown. Intense banana, fresh yeast & bread aromas. Crispy upfront, malty & biscuit flavors. Light to medium body. Moderate but lively carbonation. Unctuous mouthfeel. Bread, banana flavors, spiced hues & phenolic touch. Low bitterness & subtle spicy notes. Long sweet finish & fruity aftertaste. Delicious & refreshing!!
