A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2014. Purchased recently from Trembling Madness in York. This is a new IPA from Rudgate - a different recipe from their previous version. The label describes it as fruity with hints of citrus.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A bright golden-amber hue with faint haze and light carbonation. Yields a small head of white foam that disappears after a minute or so, leaving only a patchy surface film. Aroma of light fruity hops with hints of white grape, melon and subtle citrus. Underpinned by caramel malt, fruity yeast esters and a touch of diacetyl. Underwhelming.

Tastes of light fruity hops with a crisp, bitter finish. Notes of white grape, mild melon, a hint of grapefruit, citrus, caramel, yeast esters and stewed hops. A faint whiff of diactyl in the background, followed by a dry, leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry - the hop oils stimulate the palate. Pleasant carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of fruitiness and bitter stewed hops.

OK, though not amazing. Appearance could be better - improved head retention needed. The aroma and flavour are certainly hoppy, yet strangely unbalanced. I find the light fruity notes don't sit quite right alongside a fairly abrasive bitterness. The faint diacetyl suggests a need for longer maturation before bottling, although this could also be resolved by conditioning with live yeast. Body is alright; perhaps a shade insubstantial. Overall, a decent stab at an IPA but it fails to blend the flavour components perfectly. Probably better on cask. No need to hunt it down.

On cask at the John Bull in Alnwick.

A: Golden straw body with a nice bubbly head.
T: Godly English hops dominate. I'm guessing Fuggles? Basically, floral and a bit soapy. Otherwise light on the body but not at all lagery. Has that sweet velvety quality you only get with cask conditioned ale.
O: Superb. It's hard to find an English tasting IPA on cask.
