From outside the Spuyten Duyvil looks like many other bars. Inside though, the bar is of the long thin one room type that reminds you of maybe a handful of the ‘high end’ Belgium Bars that you may have visited, or even some of the smaller French craft bars. It has a definite European feel once inside, which for a “new” bar is very impressive indeed. The quality of the décor is extremely high, not forced, nor over-the-top, but sincerely done - no flashing Delirium Tremens neon signs here, but original Breweriana (incl. an interesting collection of Brewery Ash Trays). The surroundings are enough to command your intrigue & attention, but don’t waste too much time looking around, for the real star here is the beer selection.

Large chalkboards above the Bar area read like a Who’s Who of the beer world. I was drawn to the excellent range of Fantôme & Cantillon; I have never seen so many in one place in the US, rarely in Belgium thinking about it. The Cantillon St. Lamvinus is here, which at $45 a 750ml was steep but still excellent value, several BA’s shared one of these. (Note: you could pay in excess of $60 in some specialist stores for this rarest of Cantillons – “IF” you can find it!).

I like the quality the SD offers, even down to the Glasses that they use, a type of large wine glass that works extremely well & allows you to really enjoy all that the beers offer.

Other treats included the De Ranke XX Bitter on draft, never seen this rare Belgium Hop-Bomb from the tap. Harviestoun Old Engine Oil & the DogFish Head 120-minute IPA also proved popular. I finished the night with a nice bottle of Trappiste Rochefort 10.

There are some German beers but I never got past the Belgians. Neither did I try any food; I didn’t want to, there were too many great beers on offer to fill up valuable stomach space.

Apart from Dwarbi’s, this was the only place I visited twice this weekend during the BA NYC Rally. The “later” session with the Bros. was quite stupendous & finished in the wee hours of Sunday morning. This beats every other US based Belgium Bar I have been to hands down, as well as many in the homeland. The chap behind the Bar was a real wealth of knowledge but never condescending. Come here, enjoy your beer & absorb some real beer culture.

Fantastically well done & the personification of my dream Bar.

By far the highlight of the BA BYC Rally for me this weekend. A serious “Must-Do” for Belgium lovers also. Awesome!

Almost Perfect…well except for the sweaty sock cheeses.

What I had: an imperial IPA on tap and a glass of sauvignon blanc for my girlfriend.
What I liked: Despite the small size of the bar we were able to grab seats right away.
What I disliked: In keeping with the obnoxious service and atmosphere, there’s no sign for this place, so initially we walked right past it. Once inside we couldn’t see the draft or food menus so we had to ask the twit working the bar, who was more interested in talking down to us than actually explaining what was available. We reluctantly ordered one drink, passed on the food options (most of which we couldn’t pronounce), and rushed over to Barcade, where the night was salvaged. IMHO the suffocating pretension and sleazy hipster vibe of Spuyten embody everything that craft beer is NOT about, and you couldn’t pay me to come back here. Avoid.

offerings and specialties lean more towards cocktails but you can't beat the feel, vibe and location. Only been there once and was so captivated by the cocktail selection that I embarrasingly failed to notice what was obviously an outstanding beer selection and I would like to rectify that some day

Excellent bottle/can selection, with great tap takeovers on occasion (Burial, Hudson Valley). Backyard definitely a highlight, inside can get cramped for groups larger than four. Good cheese and charcuterie selections, makes for a nice snack while sipping

A great spot. Very much on the Belgian side but super nice back yard in a cool part of Williamburg. Very smart bartenders who are willing to offer recommendations.

I really don't get it. I recently decided to check this place out based on reputation, only to find that it's a total joke. Simple layout, kind of old-fashioned, and small. So far, so good. I planted myself at the bar; a decent crowd in front but not too busy. I started perusing the draught list and really had trouble picking a beer, mainly because the selection really wasn't that great. There was not a lot to choose from, and the prices were too high for the quality that was being offered. The bottle & can list was equally uninteresting. The bartender was pretty quick to ask what I wanted, but when I told him I just needed to look the list over for a minute, he basically disappeared. He went over to a table and sat down and started joking around with whoever was sitting there. I took the opportunity to sneak out...yeah, left without even ordering one drink, that's how bad it was.

Wasn't feeling the vibe, wasn't digging the taplist, and the service was essentially non-existent. Maybe this bar had a glory day once, but it's apparently long gone.

Top notch beer bar in Brooklyn (Williamsburg), NY.
But let's start with website... pay no attention to it as far as beer listings. Tap list is 5 years old, and bottle list is (get this) 10 years old. The place is a remarkably cool and wonderful throw back, euro style beer bar with a tree covered courtyard in the back. But no one is doing the website thing. Not a knock...just be forewarned before going.
Bar room was small but full of comfortable seating. No beer menus...just chalk boards. Which work well if you can get close to see them. Inside vibe is fun upbeat. Courtyard is super cool, relaxed and a prefect spot on a warm evening to really sit back and enjoy good beer.
Beers were all at correct temperature, and served in varied and appropriate glassware.
Meats and cheeses as well as breads were excellent, and matched well with the beers we ordered.
Beers were somewhat limited, Selection was esoteric and many off the beaten path brews. Very impressive, and each of the 3 beers we had was very good. But relatively small list of about 3 dozen beers in taps and bottles combined.
Service was excellent. Despite fairly busy Friday night, one of the 3 bartenders (Will) took the time to be extremely helpful and great guy to speak with. He made thoughtful recommendations which we all enjoyed. He made it a special visit.
Overall, they are not claiming to be the "white whale" of beer stops, but are providing an excellent setting, great beer people, really good interesting beers and food. This is place for beer and beer drinkers. As great a place to relax and enjoy beer as you're going to find.

Super cool craft beer bar with lots of options. There is a nice garden in the back, tables and a bar. Good service . Six brews on tap but more bottles. All of good quality and many local. (I enjoyed and lived the Evil Twin Yang) relaxed, cool and chill vibe . I will definitely go back soon!

This place opened right before I moved out of the city but at the time I lived down the street. It's cozy, has a fun retro vibe with things like a barber chair for a seat in the window.

I make a point to stop by every time I'm in town. Staff is friendly enough and the selection of bottles includes some tough to find brews. Nice garden area in the back, comfortable seats at the bar. Very decent offerings on tap. Definitely recommend popping in.
