Whoa, what a disappointing place to get drinks at. We originally were going to Ashley's first but with a line out the door we went one block down and went to this place...We walked in, pretty plain atmosphere, nothing special going on at all. Not much on the walls, a nicer bar area and tables. But honestly all we really care about is the beer, and it is seriouslly lacking here. There were maybe 10 taps of easy to find beers. They were at least Michigan based but nothing besides staples of beers. The bartender was not a beer person at all and just not very friendly in general.

Not a place worth checking out.

A cozy niche in Ann Arbor, great if you just want to take a break from the town but still be close to the University.

Though there's not that many beers on tap, what they do have is wonderful, local, and fresh. I got a Bell's Winter White Ale on tap here and it seriously tasted like frost on a cold winters' morning: fresh, cold, radiant. The service is fast for beers, slightly slower for food. Speaking of food, most of it is typical pub grub but they're usually prepared very well and the couple out-of-the-ordinary things they have on the menu really stand out (like the Duck Quesadillas... try them!) Overall, nice place with a very home-like atmosphere; great for meeting up with people.

Here was another place with a long, sloping vestibule that opened onto restaurant tables and chairs to the right with the malachite-topped bar at a right-oblique, facing aft. The back bar was an elegant wood and mirror affair. Several blackboards with “Specials” and “From the Bar” hung in the overhead, just inside of the door. Heading aft, the place was really deep, although not terribly wide, with lots of booth seating along the left wall and restaurant seating in the center. The kitchen was all of the way aft. The ceiling was an interesting wooden maze pattern that just fascinated me. The walls were exposed brick with some ducting visible, but the place was too brightly lit for my taste. The washrooms were through a doorway along the right wall, down a flight of stairs, and past a bunch of vintage prints on the walls. My knock on the place? Twelve taps – six micro, five decent imports, and one macro with not much of anything in bottle. I’d skip this one, if time were an issue.

Just finished helping my buddy move from Boston to Ann Arbor so he could go to grad school. We were starving and he lived right around the corner from this joint. Nice little surprise because we did not have time to go hunting for one of the local brewpubs unfortunately.

Nice small pub atmosphere. Long and narrow with the bar up front with some tables and more tables toward the back. Brightly lit which was nice. I had the reuben and it was very good. My buddy had a chicken sandwich and he said it was good enough for him to come back--he's picky about where he goes out to eat. Service was a bit odd. The waiter messed up our drink order and vanished for long stretches when we were waiting for our drinks.

Beer selection was rather nice. A couple of Bell's taps, a couple of Mendocino's and one or two others that grabbed my eye. Bottle selection was nice too, with more Bell's, some Mackinac and a few other Michigan breweries I had never heard about. Had a Mackinac Pale Ale and it was rather fresh to the palate. I was afraid it would be an old bottle but it appeared not to be.

Red Hawk is a great idea and fills a nice niche in Ann Arbor's array of bars and restaurants - great pub feel and drink selection but its actually a restaurant, and friendly to all types of people. Lots of wood, but newer, lighter in color, very clean, and brighter than your typical English pub with more tight and modern line design. Exposed brick walls, big glass front, enormous sparkling clear mirror behind the bar and, unlike most places, there aren't a thousand signs, vines, and liquor bottles blocking its great effect. Comforting, at least to my sensibilites despite its shotgun shape.

The beer is plentiful and the focus in better beer, highlighting specials that focus on local and regional micros. They're regular line-up is not much different from what's listed on their website at the address listed above. While I wish the Bass, Whitbread, and Guiness would be replaced with finer imports, the wide array of Bell's and the like are satisfying. Server's are professional and not hurried because the place doesn't seat many.

The food is the focus here, serving burger, wing, and sandwich staples but employing selection of ingredients and interesting and healthful sides. Special are always a hearty take on ethnic-Amerian and nouvelle cuisine staples, from Neapolitan pizza to potato leek to angel hair with fresh garden vegetables. Wide range of classic deli sandwiches with nuanced sides and sauces. Real attention to detail with the variety of meat, vegetable, and appetizing choices.

Though the seating is dominated by booths for food there is a bar and some nice armrests for a few folks and pints. The prices can stack up but its not quite Ashley's but neither is it Grizzly Peak. Good place to start a night out on the town, have lunch, or enjoy a slow dinner.

Not really a great beer only destination, but for food and beer in a pleasant, bright room this is a worthwhile stop. Large front windows look out towards the main A2 drag and its just across the road from the Michigan campus "Diag" Very pleasant "clean, well lit" kind of place. 12 on tap, but looked like only 4 micros, about 40 bottles, including 10 US micros, the rest are middle of the road imports and US macro swill. Have some chow here, the burgers are tasty and the wings well done, but go somewhere else for the beer experience. (Ashleys is 1/2 black down the street)

A great "bar" spot for food in Ann Arbor. They're really more of a restaurant, keeping short hours and focusing on good "traditional" grub. Great burgers and sandwhiches along with some other fine meals can certainly be had at the Red Hawk.

For such a place, the beer selection is pretty outstanding. With somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-12 microbrews in bottles at any time and around 8-10 taps, all of which are pretty good, including a rotating tap, they've got beer covered well for a bar & grill sort of place. And if you're into sodas and root beer, they have a rotating tap of crafted root beers, which is always spectacular.

It's a more low-key sort of place since it's got more of that restaurant feel to it. But it's a nice place to go have dinner and a couple beers before a big night in Ann Arbor.
