Fullers : London Porter

LOOK: Pours a dark brown with amber hues.

SMELL: Roasted malt and toffee. Caramel.

TASTE: Nice caramelized malt flavor, a touch of peat like smoke. Dry English style noble hopping. Tea like hopping and toasty malts. Faint cocoa. Even balance.

FEEL: Medium bodied, good medium level of carbonation, lasting malty flavor with a suggestion of hop.

OVERALL: A classic beer. Maybe has lost a touch over the years, or it could be modern extreme beers stealing the spotlight, but there still is something to be said for simple, full flavored, modest ABV beers. I'd always be willing to include a few of these in a session.

A - dark brown with deep ruby trim, khaki head that dissapates quickly. Moderate lacing.

S - dark ripe fruits, toffee, hint of chocolate and espresso

T- sweet toffee, milk chocolate, fruity esters. Very mild roast character with slight hint of espresso.

M- silky with low carbonation. One of those beers you want to swish around in your mouth.

O- lovin' it! Excellent example of an English brown porter. Lower hop and roast bitterness than many American examples. Easy drinking and superbly balanced.

11.2 oz bottle: label proudly proclaims "world's finest". We shall see. Poured into a proper porter / stout pint glass.

A: Pours a dark ruby brown. A little disappointing considering the style. Would have expected a darker hue. Almost no head : very low carbonation on this one.

S: Pleasant aroma of sweet pipe tobacco dominates the nose. Milk chocolate and light roasted coffee are a distant second.

T: Well, what do you know, looks can be deceiving, this has a lot going on with the taste profile. Hint of bittersweet chocolate, morning roast coffee with a very subtle and satisfying bitter hop finish.

M: Not overly malty or dry . it's just right.

O: I've had many examples of american porters and enjoyed most of them . But this is the real deal. It's even brewed in jolly ole" England. I found it to be extremely balanced with every facet playing off of and complimenting the other. I also liked that it wasn't all hopped up like so many of its american counterparts. I can envision myself pounding back several pints of it with me mates at a London pub.
