Dark and divine and blessedly not too sweet. This is a perfect beverage to enjoy on this chilly, grey fall afternoon.

I got this beer on sale - it was 1 1/2 years past the "sell by" date. Nonetheless, I loved it. It was a tad bitter, but that is what I am looking for in a porter.

Not a porter aficionado, but I found this more worthwhile than Deschuttes Black Butte Reserve X!V to get my bearings of the original style.

Feel: Thin, way too thin for a dark beer in my opinion but It wouldnt keep me from buying it again sometime.

Taste: Nice roast, nice sweetness mild dark fruit

Smell: It would be easy to say dark fruit based on its color and taste but Im getting a subdued scent of banana/clove that comes with the German Wiezens and some Belgian Blondes, Tripels, Quads.

Look: clear brown pour, dark brown in glass

Overall: Heads above Guinness Draught, Dublin Porter, and standard Extra. I would need to try West Indies Porter again and side by side its close. Good Stuff, would like to try a version with thicker body.

A – Poured standard bottle into a pint glass. Non-existent head, light to moderate carbonation. Flashlight check confirms this one isn’t opaque, though it’s close. Minimal lacing. This appears like a porter done right.

S – Nice nose on this one. Roasted malt, chocolate, slightly metallic, oats, lactose notes, and perhaps even a little bready.

T – Enjoyable. Definitely enjoyable. Memorable too. Pretty much the exact way you’d envision a great porter tasting.

M – Surprisingly crisp and clean. Some porters tend to leave that lingering aftertaste. This one doesn’t make one suffer that experience.

D – From my understanding, this porter is pretty much a go-to brew when it comes to the style. Granted, I always considered that porter to be Anchor for me but that’s not a criticism of this beer. It just comes down to my personal experiences in the world of beer admiration. This beer is very, very good and totally worthy of high praise. I would purchase this one again with no doubt. With that being said, I consider this beer to be a desert and not a session.

Poured into seidel.

L: Nice khaki head with little retention. Deep dark ruby brown.

S: A milky sweetness, roasted malt

T: Sweet dark malt, chocolate, roast, light hop spice.

F: Pretty smooth, dry finish

Pretty typical of a classic English porter. Good stuff.

A solid, all-around porter...

Every time I go to my local stops for beer, I make it a point to pick up a few local offerings, out-of-state offerings, and imports, this is one of those imports I pulled from the shelf and I'm so glad I did. Beautifully dark, practically black brew, it pours out a short lived, thin head that I strangely don't miss like in other beers. The scent is a complex mix of sweetness, malts, and chocolate, while the mouthfeel is lightly carbonated (the way I like it.) I was hoping to taste some of the chocolate character I smelled, but unfortunately, I did not, otherwise this was a very good porter and one I feel I could pound over and over.

This porter is excellent, it has a nice heavy malt chocolate smell, a very nice chocolate taste that feels smooth in the mouth and smooth as it goes down. An excellent porter across the board.

Mine was labeled past its best by date by a month, still a solid porter. Roasty and smooth.

The porter all other porters are measured against.

Deep brown, not black with a tan head.

Smells of cocoa, earthy, a touch of hops caramel and a hint of bread.

Flavor is divine chocolate forward but not over the top or overly sweet with a dark malt bitternes at the end.
