The porter all other porters are measured against.

Deep brown, not black with a tan head.

Smells of cocoa, earthy, a touch of hops caramel and a hint of bread.

Flavor is divine chocolate forward but not over the top or overly sweet with a dark malt bitternes at the end.

White-tan head that dissipates quickly. Black color with rich chocolate scent. So deliciously aromatic. Flavor is pretty close to its scent, strong chocolate malty flavor with almost no bitterness, maybe only coming from hops. Mouthfeel is really solid and nice for a 5.4% beer. Fullers straight kills it.

Clear, dark brown with reddish highlights. Tan, creamy and 3 fingers tall head. Not persisting but leaving a good lacing. Dark chocolate, medium-high level aroma upfront. Some moderate dried fruits aroma. Flavor is mostly moderate-high malty sweetness. Rounded, rich. Bready notes. Chocolate flavor. Medium bitterness breaking sweetness. It comes from a roasted malt, rather than hops. However, some earthy hops are present. Very oily, medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Nice, long lasting dry finish.

Decent porter.

Fuller Smith & Turner "London Porter"
330 ml brown glass bottle, "BEST BEFORE 22 OCT 17 ..." and sampled on 13 July 2017
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Another beer that I've enoyed before BeerAdvocate ever came into being. Why I haven't had it in years I don't know, it used to be a standard for me around 1998. It pours a very deep mahogany that borders on appearing black but never quite gets there. It's clear, and the highlight at the base of the glass glows with orange. The frothy head of tan settles fairly quickly into a creamy cap. In the nose it's chocolatey and caramelish with just a light touch of yeastiness and leafy, earthy, and grassy hops. The flavor is all about chocolate but it's not overdone. It's medium bodied, and it's not about a large quantity of malt, but the quality and richness of the malt. There's an edge of roastiness with some hints of coffee beans and molasses, but there's also a bit of golden caramel. Some light apple-like fruitiness (with just a touch of late summer red berries to it) and roasted nuttiness rounds it out, and a very firm bitterness anchors it. It finishes mainly dry as the chocolatey malt fades and the roastiness and toasty nuttiness rises. It's a brilliant example of how sometimes less can be more, and an excellent session ale. There's such a nice balance to it, AND rich malt flavors, that it's completely satisfying... and yet you'll still want another! And it won't build on your palate when you do have it. For fans of the style it's really hard to beat as it's definitely one of the classics, and perhaps my favorite, even over its greatest rival, Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter. Well worth seeking out.

Black color, light carbonation. Strong smell of roasted malt dominated . This reminded me of a straight up classic porter, really enjoyable to drink. It got better as it warmed up and tasted less sweet and the butter roasted malt came through more. An excellent porter that any fan of the style should try.
