Inspired by the classic India Pale Ales of times gone by, Fuller’s Bengal Lancer redefines Eastern promise. With a full-bodied flavour and spicy character, it’s an IPA that grabs the reins and leads from the front.

Tastes more like a Belgian ale - which is to say closer to the traditional ales i real terms. Only let down is the look which is n odd cloudy murky red ale colour with a very magnolia head, which clumps up like a lot of bottle conditioned ales do

Cask at The Vansittart Arms. Medium amber with small creamy head. Light malty aroma gets much fuller (no pun intended) in the taste. Caramel, brown bread. Light sweet notes.

Had on tap. Amber body with a full cream colored head that slowly fades. Smells has a great balance of the floral and citrus hops with english yeast, mild malt, and a hint of grass. Taste is more bland, hop bitters are cut significantly, but otherwise the same set up, still decent balance but want more potency. Feel is smooth and somewhat dry with hops dotted the finish with bitterness.

Cask at the Euston Flyer, London, as Fullers Bengal Lancer. Brown to copper colour, low head. Aroma of fruit, fudge and caramel, quite nice. Fruity and well-hopped flavour, also notes of of toffee, fudge and nuts. Good beer.
Earlier Rating: 7/21/2009 Total Score: 4 Bottle conditioned, 500 ml, as Fullers India Pale Ale. ABV is 5.3%. Bought in Sweden at Systembolaget. BB date 23/Mar/11. Deep golden colour, big to moderate white head. Pleasant aroma of hops, wood and rum-raisin. Lovely flavour, very well balanced between a distinct malty and fruity sweetness and equally distinct hops. Just the right bitterness in the finish. Brilliant stuff.

500ml bottle.
L: Beautiful, glossy, deep amber colour with several streams of bubbles. The creamy, off-white head recedes to a 5mm cap and persists.
S: Hint of sweetness. Otherwise, nothing.
T: Smokey, rich caramel balanced very nicely by leafy, stewed tea, English hops. Semi-sweet and moderately bitter.
F: Medium body, super smooth, slightly chewy mouthfeel with a long, dry finish.
O: Good example of a traditional English IPA. Biscuity malt base is front and centre, while the hops add a dry earthiness. Totally different to an American IPA, of course. Impossible to compare the two styles, like comparing a pear with an orange. This is a really good pear. Just a shame it has no aroma.

Probably the best English brewed IPA available on the market. Not easily found in supermarkets but reasonable shipping costs to buy from Fullers direct. It looks and tastes like a first rate IPA should with traditional hops that balance the over fruity taste of some other IPA with too many complex hops varieties in the mix. Has become my favourite IPA.

L- Deep amber. Pours with fat white head that reduces to 2-3mm after minutes but is long-lived for this glass. Ongoing very fine rising carbonation.
S- I can find no smell here except perhaps a faint hint of grains, surprising.
T- Hops, malts, into slight puddingy richness. It's on the dryer side of neutral but it's balanced/subtle, I like it for that.
F- Refreshing whilst having some heft.
O- Eminently drinkable, I could mini-session a few of these and not get tired of it. It shows what an IPA should be versus all the vogueish 'look at me kidz I'm a hideously over-hopped hop-bomb IPA is a silly design 330ml can for £2.50 from Tesco' hehehe... I've happily drink this again. BB: 01/08/2020.

500ml bottle served in a nonic pint. Best Before 01 Jun 19. Bought it at the Hung, Drawn, and Quartered in London and brought it home.
Pours light amber in color with a medium to small head and not much carbonation. Smell is a little tea, some hops, toasty hops.
Taste is hoppier than the aroma suggests, but it's certainly not the American strains of hops I'm so used to. Grassier, more vegetable. Malt is still pretty clear, in a kind of grainy way.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and very effervescent (much more than the appearance suggests). Solid, good beer.

It pours a mild amber color giving the same color head, about an inch in height. A fair amount of carbonation is seen rising through the slightly hazy body. The smell has the hops up front with a nicely packed English malts coming through to back it up decently. The taste is sweet and bitter through the hops and malts coming through in different stages of the beer. The palate is light to medium with some harshness hitting the tongue. Overall, this is decent, but I’m not sold on this one.
