This one was also a gift from my H night husband & wife trivia team in the pre-COVID era. She is originally from Wisconsin & they used to make routine visits, bringing back beer for yours truly. 8=) Ah, how I long for Trivia Nights … Beer will just have to suffice in the interim.

From the Bottle (eek!): "Our Brewery was born on the Big Eddy Spring in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin"; "Its waters guiding us through five generations of genuine brewing heritage."; "2014"; "A rich doppelschwartz bier brewed with Door County, WI cherries."

Yep, a 2014 vintage bottle! I wondered, as I Pop!ped the cap, where they scored it. No matter as I performed a slow, gentle C-Line pour into the awaiting glass, being extremely careful not to rouse any lees that may have settled onto the punt/kick. As a result, I only got a skim of wisps as head. 8=( Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with cola highlights at the edges. Nose held a pronounced sharp cherry quality, perhaps a concentration as the result of its aging. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, big for a Lager, solid on the tongue. The taste, while still definitely of cherries, was not as intense as on the nose. These were not sweet cherries, but neither were they tart/sour. Instead, they fell somewhere in the middle between the two. I was reminded of dried cherries, which are a pleasant snack. This beer was likewise pleasant with its alcohol dangerously well-hidden. I found it to be an easy-drinking beer, even with its advanced age, or perhaps directly attributable to it. Hmm. Finish was just over the line into semi-dry. Very nice, IMHO. YMMV.

Appearance: Deep walnut brown in color, with a modest, dense tan head, which retains well. Considerable thick, patchy lacing adorns the glass wall. Before a strong light, ruby highlights can be seen.

Aroma: Cherries, sweet, vinous alcohol, and massive German brown bread notes. There is also a sweet brown sugar note.

Taste: Begins with dark cherries and robust sweet and warming alcohol. As the taste progresses, German dark bread, brown sugar, and cocoa present. Later in the taste, there is a bit of nutty flavor. As the taste draws to a close the cherry flavors surge, presenting both the notes of the skin, and the fruit itself. Lastly is a restrained bitterness, and a little sweet alcohol.

Mouth feel: Very full and pleasant, quite soft.

Drinkability/notes: Simply wonderful, alas, never to be made again. In an era where we are offered "Prickly Pear-Infused Imperial Berlinerweisse", why can't their be more big beers like this?

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce brown long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sourcing: purchased at Spec's in Georgetown, Texas in January of 2014, priced at $10.49 plus tax for a 4-pack of twelve-ounce bottles.

12 oz brown longneck pouted into a shaker, the beer is a dark brown with a mahogany highlights. There is a thick and dense tan head.

It has a nice nose of malts, dark fruit and cherries.

I like this one, it is a malt bomb with hints of raisin, brown sugar, plum and cherries. The cherries are not artificial or overpowering, they just linger in the background and add some tartness. The 8.5% is well hidden as there is no heat. The beer is well integrated as the flavors mesh well.

The mouth is thick and slightly oily.

This is a really nice beer and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I like it.

Appearance is dark brown, almost black, with a khaki foam cap that dissipated quickly. Aroma is roast forward with a hint of cherry. TAste starts with a rich caramel that gives way to a distinct but restrained roast, and finishes with a slightly tart cherry that accentuates instead of overpowers. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light, but appropriate for style with a low carbonation and hint of alcohol warmth. Finishes with a tart cherry and light roasted malt on the tongue. Another really solid Big Eddy beer

After seeing this beer I immediately wanted to try it and thankfully found it in the mix six section at my local Giant Eagle. Unfortunately it's the 2014 vintage so at least a year of age.

A - Wow such pitch blackness from this Imperial! Foamy head even sticks around a bit even though it fizzed for a while. Good lace ring.
S - First thing I am picking up is subdued cherries ow yeah this beer is still vibrant! Touch of smoke and dark sweet malts reminded me of candied cherries.
T - It kind of reminds me of Bells cherry chocolate ale but without the stout. Smokey cocoa nibs meet cherries not as tart as one would expect but it works with some skin bitterness in the finish.
M - Quite light this beer at most feels like an IPA which is medium bodied. Be warned!

Overall I will be sure to try this fresh but my local place still has about a half case of this just sitting collecting dust and for 10.49 a four pack I may be back for at least one.

Leinenkugel's "Big Eddy Cherry Doppelschwarz"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "MAY0216"
$3.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

What to expect of a "Cherry Doppelschwarz"? Cherry, of course, and a double-sized schwarzbier and I'm guessing you can't really get any blacker in color than it already is. I feel the appearance could be a little better though as the head dropped rather steadily, and not much lacing was left behind.

Aroma? Cherries come through along with the proper "dark malt" element that suggests chocolate and roastiness without really delivering either.

Flavor? The roastiness remains side-stage, but the chocolate is pretty clear. Fortunately it works. It's sweetish but there's also a light touch of tartness that balances it out. The cherry and chocolate balance perfectly as well, and are even more complex, delivering dark skinned fruit, some toast and nuttiness, and cocoa powder. There's just enough bitterness to keep it in check, and the 8.5% ABV never shows. It crosses the palate supple and smooth, and then fades from the palate in the same way, lingering gently.

Mouthfeel is as might be expected, lightly oily with a medium-full body and a just slightly less than standard, fine-bubbled carbonation.

I hadn't really considered it as a dessert beer at first, but to a certain extent that's become my main thought after having finished it. Initially, however, I didn't find it "sweet" or too cherry-like, and worked through it almost without noticing - so, really quite drinkable! A wonderful treat.

When put up to the light you can barley see through it it has a brown and maroonish color. I'm having a hard time with the aroma, I would say it stings the nose a when it take a good sniff, somewhat of an alcohol smell. It has a malty and yeasty smell as well. It tastes betteer than it smells, I get a rich caramel taste with a sweeter finish. The beer is effervescent and has ample body, heavy in the mouth.
