Leinenkugel's "Big Eddy Cherry Doppelschwarz"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "MAY0216"
$3.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

What to expect of a "Cherry Doppelschwarz"? Cherry, of course, and a double-sized schwarzbier and I'm guessing you can't really get any blacker in color than it already is. I feel the appearance could be a little better though as the head dropped rather steadily, and not much lacing was left behind.

Aroma? Cherries come through along with the proper "dark malt" element that suggests chocolate and roastiness without really delivering either.

Flavor? The roastiness remains side-stage, but the chocolate is pretty clear. Fortunately it works. It's sweetish but there's also a light touch of tartness that balances it out. The cherry and chocolate balance perfectly as well, and are even more complex, delivering dark skinned fruit, some toast and nuttiness, and cocoa powder. There's just enough bitterness to keep it in check, and the 8.5% ABV never shows. It crosses the palate supple and smooth, and then fades from the palate in the same way, lingering gently.

Mouthfeel is as might be expected, lightly oily with a medium-full body and a just slightly less than standard, fine-bubbled carbonation.

I hadn't really considered it as a dessert beer at first, but to a certain extent that's become my main thought after having finished it. Initially, however, I didn't find it "sweet" or too cherry-like, and worked through it almost without noticing - so, really quite drinkable! A wonderful treat.

L: Pours brilliant brown with ruby highlights under a rapidly dissipating 1” tan foam cap. S: It is not super aromatic but cherry and dark malt flavors come through.

T: An interesting malty doppel bock character balances the cherry flavors. There is dark bread and a light sweetness and a hint of nuts balancing the cherry suggesting a cherry bread. The various flavors are well balanced. Nothing is cloying or overstated.

F: Clean, creamy and smooth with a medium full body and medium carbonation. Very mild alcohol warming.

O: A very good dessert beer.

Poured into a pint glass. Best by date is 27 April 2015 (pretty fresh!). Very dark brown, almost black, opaque. Very little head even after a pretty aggressive pour, faded to a very light film, little lacing. Aroma is not very big, with chocolate being the dominant smell. Some light coffee and cherry notes as well. Taste is a nice combination of slight chocolate, cherry, coffee and that great sweet German maltiness. Very nice combination, really not what I expected, but quite nice nonetheless, the subtle cherry notes are nicely done. Mouthfeel was very thin with very little carbonation, again not really what I was expecting- the 8.5% is pretty well hidden. Overall, this was a pretty tasty combination, not to bad at all!

Twelve ounce bottle poured into a snifter.

Half finger of light khaki head. The beer pours a dark brown and amber color but it looks pitch black in a glass. Light carbonation visible. 4.25

Sweet dark malt on the note and a light aroma suggestive of cherries. Light caramel and chocolate. 4

Tart cherry, but it's light and somewhat subtle. Chocolate flavors work throughout but there's a tasty dark chocolate and cherry finish, kind of similar to a cordial. Caramel notes and vanilla are noticeable as it warms up. 3.5

Carbonation is pretty big, almost too assertive. Body is on the lighter side of medium with a touch of tartness and a lightly bitter, semi-dry finish. I think I'd enjoy it more with a little less carbonation, otherwise not bad. 3.5

It's a nice beer flavor-wise, but I do think the carbonation distracts a bit.

When put up to the light you can barley see through it it has a brown and maroonish color. I'm having a hard time with the aroma, I would say it stings the nose a when it take a good sniff, somewhat of an alcohol smell. It has a malty and yeasty smell as well. It tastes betteer than it smells, I get a rich caramel taste with a sweeter finish. The beer is effervescent and has ample body, heavy in the mouth.

This is an interesting offering by Lienie. The beer is nearly opaque dark with white head that is not leaving much of a lace. The scent is mostly roast and smoke. The taste has the cheerios with smoke and slight roast. The Mouthfeel is medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall great combo and worth a try.

Pours a dark brown with no head or lacing.
Smell is insignificant, don't really smell anything discernible.
Taste of slight cherry upfront, but a noticable off flavor on the back end.

12oz picked up at the COOP.. but all the bottleshops in Boise have it too.. Poured into my FunkFest goblet.. No real retention from a 1/2" tannish head.. the brew is pretty much black.. A oily/dark ash with sweet fruity cherry essence that reminds me of cough syrup more than beer.. liquid smoke essence seems fake and really doesn't jive in my mind.

I get that this is probably a doppelbock with some other fun stuff thrown in, but I just don't care for it... Too bad.. I typically have enjoyed the Big Eddy offerings.
