Poured into a Hamms chalice this beer is a ruddy hazy Amber with an off-white head that quickly recedes. Aroma is pretty weak on the hops (grassy and earthy) with a typical American adjunct lager maltiness. Taste has a bit of grassy hop flavor upfront with a fair amount of bitterness in the finish. Plenty of stink malt. Mouthfeel is light and a bit more boozy than I'd expect. Lingering bitter finish. This beer is a mess. Takes an adjunct lager and adds more bitter hops than aromatic.

Leinenkugel's IPL.

Alrighty. Usually the beers outta these guys aren't all that impressive but that isn't exactly a shock to anybody. I'm in the ' gotta try 'em all ' club and I'm cool with that. Found a single bottle at my local Meijer for $1.59 and figured why the hell not. Enough blah, Let's do it.

Look - From the twelve ounce bottle hard poured into an imperial pint glass. The brew pours a moderate level of amber to my surprise with a finger and a half of slightly off white head which appears to have a pinkish tint. Carbonation is extremely high and creates a cyclone within my glass. Clarity is high.

Smell - The nose really isn't all that large as in I really have to sniff to pick much up. Perhaps my glass is too big for the ounces. But, grapefruit really dominates here which surely as hell is not a bad thing AT ALL.

Taste - Upon tasting this beer either my sychronization is off or this beer is much closer to an IPA than any type of IPL I have ever come across. Bitter grapefruit with piths and a sturdy malty backbone. Not grapefruit in the sculpin variant way but tastes very east coast. No session filler either. Tastes like a high ABV ipa packed into a smaller beer. Not complex, but it is tasty.

Feel - Even the feel on this beer scream IPA medium bodied though not very dense, along side an exceptional amount of carbonation. Grapefruit all other the mouth though here it comes together with a bit of regular grape flavor. Swallows rather bitter.

Overall - I don't understand. Nothing lager about this beer and I once again do not understand the low ratings for it. If you take this as a mid level ipa instead of what they say on the label it really is a rather good beer and a great beer by the standards of the people who made it..

Picked up a single to relive my ill-spent youth, drinking Leine’s out of hard plastic glasses at First Avenue. Best thing available in a place that’s become a beer nirvana. 12 oz. bottle.

The pour is clear, dark, amber, no doubt crafted with the consistency that Leine’s has developed over the last thousand years or however long they’ve been making beer. Sorry; the scream echoes you hear in this review is the Twins season going down the shitter in the top of the 8th. The nose is faint flowered fields, mild lager yeast, not much more.

If you put Leine’s IPL into a Hill Farmstead bottle, neck beards would swoon, the score would skyrocket, and mules would line up for the release. The up-front hops are really nice: floral, middle-of-the-tongue bitterness, sharp tangerines. The lager yeast injects itself forcibly into the mid-palate & plays really nicely off the hops, which isn’t always the case with these two ingredients. Bit of candle wax. Very dry, & like anything Leine’s, built to be sucked down by the case.

A really nicely constructed beer from a brewery that’s quietly put out some winners over the years. And they’ll always hold a place in my heart, right next to that First Avenue Beastie Boys concert right after Check Your Head came out. I had a Leine's in my hand then, too. Ah…good beer.

Color is light yellow with frothy white cap which it retains and good lacing.

Aroma is bready malt and rich, spicy hops with a lingering floral citrus scent.

Taste is hop forward with malt standing in the background but not out of sight. I get grapefruit and bitter lemon as the citrus influence which sing a little louder in the finish/aftertaste.

Medium texture.

Overall it's a good effort. They were shooting for a noticeable but lighter hop presence and they hit the mark. Hops are undoubtedly the star of the show but malt plays a strong supporting role. Brewer says five varieties of hops are used so there's something for everybody but my palate is not attuned enough to separate them out. There are enough of them alright all the way to the aftertaste which is mildly and pleasantly bitter.

A clear amber with lots of bubbles rising. A finger+ of foamy, off white head that lingers. Nice lacing down the glass. The aroma is mostly citrus...grapefruit/oranges, lightly toasted bread crust, and caramel malt. Very mild dank quality, and mild pine. I'm getting just a bit of a sulfur note. Flavor has, again, citrus fruits, a little dankness and very mild pine. Body is medium and carbonation feels just on the lighter side. A little sticky up front and dry on the finish. The grapefruit flavor comes through nicely. Mild, building bitterness overall. Just that minor sulfur note in the nose, but not really the flavor.

Rare is it that I can't finish even half a beer. This was such a beer. This is an abuse of hops.
