This is by far the best product ever to have the Leinenkugel name associated with it. Nice orange amber color, very piney aroma. Grapefruit flavor with a decent amount of carmel sweetness.
Medium mouthfeel, not as bitter of a finish as one might expect.

Appearance: Nice clear amber color that pours a strong 2 finger head

Smell: Sweet, fruity aroma

Taste: Similar to the aroma, quite sweet, definite grapefruit quality. Not a lot of bitterness, but it does seem to intensify a bit as the beer warms up.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and light, super drinkable

Overall: This is a very drinkable and enjoyable IIPA. The 2014 version of this beer seems to have less bitterness than 2013, and I like this more overall than I remember enjoying the 2013 edition. In full disclosure, the guy who brewed this particular batch is a family friend, and I think he did an admirable job!

Had this on tap at a little out of the way place in Madison before moving on to FFF for Dark Lord Day.

The color is brown with an amber tint and a head that retains. The lacing is nice, leaving rings as you drink (unless you're drinking too fast). The aroma is so good, it's almost as if I am opening a hop cone and smelling it like Jim Koch. The smell is very floral with citrus hops that are prevelent, but also has a bit of a grassy hop taste in the finish. The flavor is very good, an explosion of great hops that are balanced nicely with a medium bodied base. Still on the lighter side of Double IPA's. The mouthfeel was a little overcarbonated, but still enjoyable. Overall I hope Leine's makes more of this great beer, very enjoyable and drinkable!!

I grew up drinking Leines before the term craft beer was ever uttered, so I was skeptical when I saw they had an Imperial IPA. But there's a lot going on here. This is a complex beer with fabulous flavors. I'm a long time fan of BeerAdvocate and look up beers here all the time. This is the first review I've written 'cuz this is clearly an underrated beer, that should rate a 4+!!!

Picked up a single of this IIPA recently off of a nice, clean shelf. Loved the RIS when it first came out a while back, so happy to give this one a shot. Cut my teeth on Leine's a long, long, long time ago when it was the only drinkable beer at First Avenue, our regular haunt. 12 oz. bottle with a "Dec1212" date on it. I'll assume that's a "May1212" born on date...one point for dating, minus three-quarters for lack of clarify.

Pour is that lovely burnished copper that usually precedes a good hop-bomb, for some reason. Nose is heavy on the malts, with a good resinous quality to it, but the only hop flavor is floral, & not much at that.

Big Eddy IIPA dances along the dangerous edge of balance: good hops on one side, a sad precipice of too much malts on the other. First impression is of heavy caramel malting, but they're kicked aside by a rush of hops - nice bitterness, heavy oils, with appearances of tropical fruit & earthiness. Resin trumps all in the end, sticking with me until I go brush my teeth. It's that coating quality in the mouth that is the high note here, & leads to sipping more quickly than normal.

Very good? Excellent? So close. It's the caramel malts, done with a deft hand, that tip this one into the excellent category. Nice entry into the IIPA category - keep on bringing it, Leine's.

Appearance: cloudy, copper color; very warm and rich; white head that dissipates pretty quick but retains a ring
Aroma: really malty; molasses; a bit of hop; hint of apple notes
Taste: molasses/sugary sweetness up front; big bready flavor; a bit of hops; moves into apple-y crispness and then into rich dried, dark fruit (prune and raisin maybe); finishes with a great hoppiness and fig; some alcohol warmth on the back end; finishes pretty dry
Mouthfeel: thick and kind of syrupy; well carbonated
Overall Impression: this is a nice beer; really well balanced; crisp, kind of clean feel; it's got a nice depth and a complexity of flavor to it that continues to develop as you drink it; the dryness welcomes another sip; quite drinkable, but one to sit back and really enjoy

Light amber colored with a sticky head of sand colored foam.

Lots of fresh hops in the nose that offer up pine, citrus and grassy notes.

Lots of hoppy goodness, but with a lower bitterness. Complex hop flavor with some pine, citrus and grass flavors coming through. Solid malt sweetness without much but a trace of alcohol.

Smooth with lots of velvety carbonation and a pine resiny feel.

A very well done DIPA overall. The Big Eddy series have all been very good beers and this one is no exception.

Appearance: It pours a hazy dark orange color and is topped with a thin layer 1/8” of white colored head that lingers.
Smell: The blend of hops in the aroma of this beer is excellent I get pine grass citrus all blended into one delicious sniff. Big Eddy maybe one of the best smelling beers that I can remember.
Taste: The flavor isn’t as distinctive and complex as the aroma but that would be a hard thing to live up to. There is a tasty balance to the flavor that makes it a good IPA just wish that the hops were more prominante.
Mouthfeel: This is on the heavy bodied side to most IPAs but it is still easy drinking without losing any flavor.

Poured from bottle into snifter

Appearance – Pours a beautiful deep ruby red/deep amber color. Upon pouring there is only a tiny tannish head that forms. The head fades very fast to leave only a lingering film on the top of the brew. Swirling the beer in the snifter shows a very sticky and thick body as it clings to the side of the glass before reseeding back to the pool of beer.

Smell – The aroma is very bready with a strong presence of a caramel sweetness and some roasted aromas. The hop aromas are very light with only a small amount of citrus detected in the nose. Other then the citrus hop is a warming alcohol and dark fruit smell, which give this brew more of a doppelbock aroma then that of an IPA.

Taste – A doughy taste is the first to be detected by the tongue. This is mixed with some sweeter flavors of a caramel. As the taste moves on hop tastes start to work their way in as some of the caramel flavor fades. The hop which are in the taste are largely citrus in nature and arrive with some lighter dark cherry and raisin sweetness. Soon the citrus hop drown out the dark fruits as they become more potent toward the end. At the end a doughy and grapefruit hop are left in the taste, but not without a strong presence of alcohol which when combined with the hop leaves a somewhat burning tingle on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – Quite full bodied with a very chewy feel. The carbonation on this one is rather low. Both the thickness and carbonation are quite fitting for the brew as they allow all the bready, grapefruit and boozy flavors to linger on the tongue and warm you through and through.

Overall – It is a thick and hearty IPA. Definitely a sipping IPA.

2012 release. 12oz bottle, pours copper with stunning clarity, creamy beige head holds good retention and also leaves good lacing down the glass. Aromas are caramel malt, dank hops, seems sweet on the nose. Tastes are sweet caramel, juicy sweetened grapefruit, mild pine, honey. Body is medium with ample carbonation, finishes a little on the sweet side. Overall, not the best DIPA out there, but I did really enjoy this one. I do prefer a bit more pine and bitterness in my DIPA, where this one was more sweet, but it was still good though.

Thanks to jtd1969 for hooking me up with this bottle.

A - orangish amber; no head

S - floral, faint citrus

T - bread, grapefruit, floral, sweet

M - medium bodied, good carbonation, smooth

I opened this with little expectations. This is a pretty solid IPA though. It has balance and good flavor. I've never been a fan of a Leinenkugel offering before. It makes me wonder why they're producing the rest of their lineup if they're capable of making a solid beer like this one.
