Poured from the bottle into a glass.
Dark brown color, reveals a rich ruby when held to the light.
Head fades quickly; no lacing.
Nose is a blast of banana bread, no joke.
Hint of molasses underneath.
Nice mouthfeel; not to heavy but hardly watery.
Malt bomb flavor; a smokiness reveals itself as well. No sign of hops anywhere. Banana bread is also present here. Nice complex brew; hints of bitter chocolate come out over time. Almost a belgian vibe to me, but the better for it.

2012 vintage, so rating set to current average.
Aroma is rich with prune and raisin notes, deeply caramelized malt, and a hint of peat. The dark fruit really dominates.
Flavor is slightly vinous at this point, but underlying notes of raisins, dates, and plums redeem. Toasted, nutty, toffee notes counter sweet caramel malt nicely, and a lightly smoky finish add depth. I'd rate it higher than it is, especially fresh. That vinous note is the only thing that detracts.

I think this is only rated so low because it made by leinenkugel. A sold example of the style. when you imagine a scotch ale this must be it. I will agree that there is nothing extreme about this beer but it is still good.

"Limited release, majestic brew with layer upon later of malt complexity." Brewed in the style of a Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy. Limited release in the Big Eddy series, initially released spring 2012, available in 12 oz. bottled 4 packs and on limited draft.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a snifter glass. Served above 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a short-lived crisp fizzy head of a toasted tan color over a hazy dark brown body. Retention is poor and lacing is light and spotty. 2
(Smell) Strong fruit profile of syrupy dried fruits, dates, raisins, soft fig and plum, meets notes of caramelized malt syrups and soft grain malts with a moderate sweetness. Some delicate fruit acidity rounds out the malt sweetness. Potency is moderate. 3.5
(Taste) Peat and caramel malts forward with moderate sweetness and smokey undertones, followed by tart and syrupy fruit compounds, lots of tart raisin and plum character forward. Fairly clean overall, finishes on the sweet side. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, residual, oily. Carbonation is moderate, generating a moderate frothiness and a moderately crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly sweet over acidic and bitter. Alcohol presence is mild and there are no off characters overall. 3.5
(Overall) A fairly textbook example of a Wee Heavy that falls right in the middle of what we come to expect of the style, meaning I wasn't disappointed, but the potential for depth of flavor is always there, and I could always appreciate a smokier or more robust malt profile than what this beer has here. At over 3 years of age, this ale is still very drinkable, although there is a more profound fruit profile due to the age, unfortunately I have not seen this beer in a vintage other than 2012 in my area, so it may be impossible to see how it compares to a fresher batch. Altogether, it may be worth trying at a respectable price. 3.5

A: Brilliant chestnut half inch rocky tan head that quickly dissipates to a thin film, some legs.
S: Malt, dark sugars, esters, dark fruit, a touch of peat, no hop aroma, malty caramel, alcohol.
T: Rich malt flavors, peat and a hint of scotch, fruity esters, dried fruit, a little nutty, long lingering malt after taste balanced by some English Hops that are there but not prominent, a little anise in the finish.
F: full bodied, smooth, med-low carbonation.
O: Full and sweet but dries in the finish

Opened a bottle labeled 2013. Surprised with the chocolate coming through. Not overly sweet. Decent roast. I will be looking for this to have again.
