A: Pours a brownish red, dark cherry colour, filtered look, with a huge head which dissipates to fine tan foam on top. After poured, no carbonation visible in the glass.

S: Smells of dark notes, coffee, malts, and caramel. Having said this, it smells light on all these intricate notes, heavier on the toasted malts. Also smell a vinegar note, and a creamy note.

T: Taste as slight sour which brings in the toasted malts, some liquorice, and then finishes sour, with a slight bitterness which is almost not present.

M:Very smooth. Light to medium body, with low carbonation. Somewhat watery.

O: Quite impressed for a Chinese beer. Reminds me of a Schwarzbier. However it is somewhat watery compared to German Schwarzbiers. Having said that, with this beer we are seeing China take a step forward in its beer production. It seems quite versatile as far as food pairing.

Another fantastic CAN for The CANQuest (TM), courtesy of boatshoes. I apologize for the delay in making my reviews, but I wanted to get solid pictures before opening such gems. CAN you forgive me?!?

From the CAN: "Yanjing [Black] Beer"; as well as translated "Ingredients"; "Original Gravity: 12 P"; "Alcohol [By Volume]"; "Product standard No,"; "Quality Grade: Excellent"; "Production date: see can bottom"; "Expiration dates"; and "Add[ress]".

I was back to the Crack & Glug with this beer and I got a finger of fizzy light-tan head with limited retention from the pour. Color was a simply gorgeous deep mahogany with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled of dark chocolate and anise and my mouth began to water. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium and there was an initial intense smokiness followed by an anise flavor on the tongue. The finish was likewise smoky, but with a dark chocolate and anise semi-sweetness. Wow! This was a beer that I could drink more often (if only).

Had in Beijing.
330ml can poured into a pint class.
Born on date: 2/22/13
ABV: 4.3%
Ingredients list water, barley, and hops.

A- Almost black in the middle of the glass with brown and red along the sides. Thick, fluffy off white head looks good, but dissipates quickly.

S- Roasted malts. Coffee. A hint of sourness.

T- The roasted malts hint the tongue first but are soon followed by some sour cherries and dark fruit. Coffee beans. Raisins.

M- A little thin. Prickly carbonation fades and the finish is watery.

Overall and enjoyable beer, and a welcome change from Yanjing's other offerings.
