Asahi Super Dry was a direct result of extensive market research which indicated a consumer preference for a more palatable beer with less maltiness, relatively high alcohol content and a light aftertaste, that paired well with the changing Japanese diet. With this insight Asahi used its brewing knowledge to develop a beer with a crisp bite, refreshing taste and clear finish to satisfied this requirement. Code named project FX, Asahi engineered a highly attenuated, highly carbonated pilsner. The later renamed product, Super Dry began sales on March 17th 1987 and gave birth to the dry beer category. The market success spawned similar competitor products and initiated what was known as the “Dry Wars” in Japan and a brief marketing fad for dry beers internationally. However Asahi has stood the test of time and now years later Super Dry continues it legacy as the world’s premier dry beer.

Special Yeast - Asahi # 318 is the proprietary ingredient used to give Super Dry its “dryness”. This special strand of yeast produces high attenuation during fermentation in conjunction with the choice grains.

Finest Ingredients – Asahi uses select grains and hops sourced worldwide based on strict criteria to maintain flavor consistency and promote sustainability. Barely with high starch content and both noble style bitter and fine aroma hops are key contributors to Super Dry’s smooth taste.

Bizarrely I have never had one of these before because I'm not a huge lager man and if drinking lager will go Czech or whatever is cheapest. This tastes like a refined American lager to me, little taste, very crisp and dry but without that cheap metallic flavour or corn syrup sweetness you get from your typical US macro brew. It's actually quite impressive how little aftertaste there is, will be ideal in summer or to wash down some strong pan-asian food. It's not going to win awards for complexity but I feel the raring on here is harsh, it does what it sets out to do. Not every beer needs to be an imperial stout or ipa to be likeable.

Look:
Asahi Super Dry catches the eye with its nice golden hue, giving off a touch of class. Carbonation's just right, not too much fuss.

Smell:
Hints of biscuity malt, rice, and grassy hops fill the air, promising a refreshing experience that's as comforting as a Southern breeze.

Taste:
It's clean, no two ways about it. Goes down smooth, especially alongside some good ol' sushi. Not too dry, not too bold, just right.

Feel:
Feels good on the tongue, not too heavy, not too light. Just what you need to wash down a plate of your favorite Asian food.

Overall:
Asahi Super Dry might fly under the radar for some folks, but it's a solid choice in my book. Clean, easy-drinking, and pairs up nicely with a plate of sushi. Not much of an aftertaste, but who needs it when you've got good company and good food?

Poured form a 620ml bottle into a pint glass

Pours a light straw with a full, tight bubbled head that laces well.
The smell is typical of a beer brewed with rice and has a touch of funk. The taste is fresh and crisp, a little creamy and with an ever so slight bitterness on the finish. There's an alcohol aftertaste that I'm not a fan of. The mouthfeel is a little oily, highly carbonated with tight little bubbles and smooth.

Overall, crisp, smooth and refreshing. This beer doesn't do much but what it does do it does well. It's okay, I imagine it's much better in the hot weather or with very spicy food, being drunk on it's own doesn't really play to it's strengths.

I have had this beer many times in both North America and in Asia (specifically Japan), in-fact if you go to Osaka and or Kyoto, this is the main beer that you will find other than Suntory. This beer has long been under-valued and in most cases overlooked compared to the other well known beers brands at least in my opinion.

Look-Its a clean almost gold look with little to no hazyness. Their is carbonation but it seems to go away rather quickly. Even if you get a big mug of it like I sometimes do the head still isnt too bad.

Smell: I get a bread/ biscuit smell from this with rice after tones. The bread smell is very refreshing and the rice compliments it nicely.

Taste: it has biscuit taste complimented by a smooth rice finish. The taste is pure and clean and is not at all offensive to the tounge. Some people have suggested a floral sort of taste, I concur, but it is a light floral if its their at all.

feel: A very smooth feel with little to no harshness.

Overall: 3.75, the beer is not bad at all considering that it's a name brand beer that most people know and have heard of. I do not think that this beer would be great by itself, rather its complimented by eating sushi and or ramen. I also believe that it is a good beer to relax too after mowing the lawn all day.

33 cL bottle, straight up with a Pad Thai dinner at a bistro in Toulouse, France.
Here is a complimentary beer that just sits there until called upon to rinse and refresh. Dry finish, leaves no aftertaste.
On its own, I’d say ‘meh’, but with Asian food, it’s a tag-team champ.

Really not that bad, but only if drank with some great Sushi, would never drink it in any other case. Pours a very pretty and clean light gold with a nice tight lager head. No one can say this beer doesn't look fantastic. Smell is a bit offputting, mostly just some malt/rice sweetness that's a bit reminiscent of corn lagers. Not a lot of hop aroma going on. Taste is slightly better. Very light and gentle, rice sweetness that pairs great with Sushi, but really offers nothing on its own. Feel is nice; dry and refreshing, bubbly, and very light. Barely even registers that you're drinking a beer with the insane drinkability.

In reality not much different from the solid American Macros, but a lot drier which is quite a nice change. And hey, Macros aren't bad beers even if they aren't world-class.

Asahi is a Japanese lager that is well liked around the world. The Super Dry brand as become synomonous with Japanese beer, culture, and food.

Purchased at Glenfield Bottle Shop, Sydney. Best Before - 24 August 2024.

Appearance:
Classic golden straw appearance of a lager. Thin soapy head that disappates all too quickly. Not as carbonated as many American, Australian or European lagers, But there's enough bubbles floating to the top to let you know there's fizz in the beer.

Aroma: Biscuity malt, cooked rice, floral grassy hops. Smells refreshing.

Taste: Smooth Creamy rice, bisuit malt, nice bitterness from the hops towards the finish complements and overall clean flavour. Something which doesn't surprise me from the Japanese. Pleasant, inoffensive lager flavours.

Feel: Smooth, slightly thin, but does have a decent body for a lager. Well carbonated.

Overall: A very easy, smooth, uncomplicated lager. Perfect complement to Japanese cuisine. There's no harsh metallic ring, there's flavour, body and depth to the beer, and it's smooth. A nice, sessionable easy drinking lager.
