334ml bottle poured into a 16oz pint glass.

A - Big, billowy mocha head off the pour. Dark brown-black with a lot of ruby highlights. Head settles nicely.

S - Dark, roasty malt and molasses with some brown sugar sweetness.

T - A lot of roasted malt creating a light bitterness in the aftertaste. A little thin to be honest. Still pretty strong on the molasses, but the brown sugar and dark chocolate sweetness backed off a lot. Fairly easy to drink, but nothing really exceptional here.

M - Pretty smooth, without a ton of carbonation. Body is surprisingly thin and feels a little watered down.

D - Lacks something in the flavor profile. I'm usually not a fan of really bitter flavors, but even this was a little tame for me. A nice drinkable stout, but nothing fantastic.

Pours black ruby in color with a thin tan colored head that fades into a wispy lace. Nose is sweet dark malts and fresh brewed coffee. Medium in body with a smooth mouthfeel. Lots of sweet roasted malts in the flavor along with notes of dark fruits, bitter coffee, and burnt toast. A decent brew and certainly more enjoyable than their “Super Dry” beer.

Had this out of a bottle tonight at a Sushi place here in Austin.

A: Pours a deep black color w/a good amount of head.

S: Nose is mostly rice and some roasted malts.

T: Up front, this brew is very good, as the toasted malt flavor makes its precense and is very good at that. Finishes with a minial hop bitterness and some estercey flavors as well.

M: Watery, just too darn thin for a dark beer, even if it's meant to go w/food.

D: Overally, I would say this a fairly good, drinkable brew. Not something I would buy on a regular basis, but when I am having sushi, I think it's defenitely one of the better choices out there. It certainly beats the hell out of the lighter Japanese brews I have tried.

Aroma is roasted malts and mild grainy sweetness. The flavor is roasted/dark malts, mild grainy sweetness in the middle, mild fruit and a bit of acidity in the finish.

Pours a lovely pitch black body but I would never have guessed that the Japanese would give such good head, tan and big and proud.

Lovely malt smells and a hint of toffee.

The taste is dark indeed malty and a hint of liquorice slightly sweet but just slightest bitterness on the way out of the door not much else though.

A very thin mouthfeel but good carbonation.

I guess if I found myself in the land of the rising sun, I would be supping this, quite good, indeed worth trying

Clear, brown colour with a small, tan head. Average head retention.

Nice, nutty, bready aroma with distinct yeast and caramel notes. Decent.

Malty yet crisp and dry. Slightly roasty with more yeast notes.

Medium body with moderate carbonation.

A decent beer from Asahi and a real surprise.

An easily drinkable dark. Its red-black appearance is betrayed by the light-bodied, thin, nature of the beer. Hence, the easy drinkability. I was hoping for a more comprehensive flavour with a thicker mouthfeel. Flavour is sweeter than expected and pleasing, with cider, coffee, and slight pineapple and cherry pit flavors. There is a weak roasted aftertaste that doesn't linger long. Best served only slightly chilled, as the coldness creates a false crispness and masks the underlying flavor. Overall a solid beer; good as an introductory dark lager.

334ml bottle poured into Unibroue glass feb18 2010

A not far from cola with the fast falling tan head to match, lots of bubbles stuck to the side of the glass but to dark to see bubbles inside

S some molasses with a little chocolate and raisin

T not far from the smell but with some very mild coffee

M decent carbonation gives it a slightly creamy feel but it's still fairly light in the mouth surprising considering the color

D better then expected and that's never a bad thing but not blown away by any aspects of this beer

not a bad beer and for a big brewer from Japan I was fairly happy with what I got for my money

Enjoying right now at Tau New Asian restaurant in Billings, Montana. For some reason I have not seen this for sale locally anywhere so this is the first I've seen it let alone tried it, though I have heard of it.

Very dim lighting in here, but from what I can tell, dark reddish brown ("black"), at least moderately clear. Weaker aroma, my bottle was opened for me when inreturned from restroom so perhaps that is why. Dark fruit or toffee and tartness, I suppose. Predominantly toffee flavor, some smokiness/roastiness, some fruit hardness but almost more so a musty sour suggestion from the malt that do not distract too much, weaker than what you would find in certain odd Scotch Ales and Vienna Lagers. Cleaner, drier finish than expected, but probably within style parameters. Surprisingly effervescent and light in body for what it is but it works well enough with everything else, equal parts fine tingles and velvet.

a: nice deep true black body with off-white head that fades a little too quickly leaving just a white coating on top

s: not amazingly fragrant and the hints of milk chocolate and coffee

t: chocolate taste followed by some coffee; very simple but very good

m: for a japanese macro this beer is incredibly creamy w/ maybe a little too much carbonation

d: this is a great beer for Asia but still a good beer anywhere else; i'll definitely have it at a japanese bar anyday

Coming in a 334ml slim brown glass bottle, the gravity is 5%abv. as stated on the beer label. BB 01/09/2006, served lightly chilled in a slim goblet.

A: pours a very dark brown colour, with caramely red glows; the tan head comes thick and very foamy with superb retention, against a lively carbonated body--looking very decent and elegant.
S: a semi-thick note of buttery+toffeeish+caramely malts and bitter-sweet burned sugar dominates, sprinkled with lots of brown sugar, bread-crust like grainy note and a very faint trace of hops. Slightly overly malty whereas other elements are subdued, yet crafted nicely all the same.
T: upfront the texture is indeed akin to a rice-added lager with its slightly thin-ish and metallic touch, but not too much of a distraction. Like the aroma, the palate is dark malt-dominated, with plenty of caramely flavour of dark malts and bitter-sweet burned/roasty and sweet-coffeeish edge of roasted malts, backed by a slightly rough, chewy, whole-meal bready as well as nutty malts underneath. Rather clean finish with only a touch of sugar, true to a dark lager, but the roast-malty and nutty aroma and a residual chewy texture sustain nicely at the back of the palate.
M&D: medium-plus bodied for a Schwarzbier-style lager, the rich and grainy content makes it a quite chewy and enjoyable beer. And, fortunately, the added corn and rice are not played to the detriment to the beer's texture, thus I'd say this Japanese brewery's self-appointed task of producing a Munich-style dark lager (as specified on the beer cap) is no disappointment at all.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is a mix of cocoa and roasted malt. Smells a bit like a stout and nothing like I expected. The flavor is also stout-like. I get a lot of chocolate and roasted malt, mixed with some light coffee and milky lactose notes. Overall, this reminds me a lot of a milk stout. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Had a small tan head that dissipated into a thin collar. It was dark with deep mahogany highlights. The aroma was very weak with roasted malts. The taste was nutty and alot better than I expected after the disappointing aroma. Goes down smooth and had a bit of smoky taste to it. Similar to a schwarzbier but weaker. Overall a decent beer that I could see trying in a Japanese restaurant if nothing better around. (3.5, RB, T, O)

A: The beer is clear but very dark garnet red in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high tan colored head that died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some hints of caramel and nuts.
T: The taste has flavors of nutty and caramel malts with hints of cola; there are some hints of initial sweetness which are then followed by a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied, a little watery and a bit smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is extremely easy to drink and can be considered sessionable.

Pours out a deep opaque brown, translucent mahogany nimbus, with bright garnet highlights when held to direct light. Tall, tight spongy light beige head that slowly recedes to a thick cap.

Roasted malt with some sour/tart grains on the nose, rounded toasted notes come out near the end.

Yum, sweet toasted bready malt up front, lingering grain sweetness throughout, dryness in the aftertaste already. Fairly one-dimensional, but enjoyable.

Smooth, slick, medium-bodied mouthfeel with just enough carbonation to offer some minor crispness.

Enjoyable, though far from complex, definitely in line to make a good session beer.

Munich-Type Asahi? Okay. Cool.

Pours pretty dark brown with a thin creme head. Nose is quite malty and sweet with what's coming off as molasses. A bit too malty sweet really. Mellows out enough as time goes on to make it drinkable enough. Decent, yes. Especially coming from a major brewer.

I poured this really black brew into my tumbler at 40 degrees. The beer was uhhh black. I said That. The beer poured a really nice big head and I like that. The beer had a slight beer smell, oh I guess it should. Really could not come up with anything else. I liked the beer and its a good product that I believe I will will have to buy again.
