Poured a deep brown that turned to a ruby color when held to light, with a half-finger off-white head. Looks pretty good, very much a Strong Dark. Scents of Belgian yeast, dark fruit, raisins and some alcohol. It's the bare bones of a Belgian Strong Dark, nothing amazing, but the bare minimum aroma is present. The taste follows the aroma. Belgian yeast and dark fruit begin the sip, moving into raisins and some brown sugar. Again, the bare bones of a strong dark, the basic flavors, but not the depth and complexity in flavor some of the really good examples of the style present. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate-light carbonation, pretty true to style. Overall this is an okay Belgian Strong Dark. The principle flavors are present, but all the nuances that make the great Abbey ales are absent. It's alright, a good attempt at a Belgian Strong Dark, but nothing special.
