Style: English Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Winner of both the Gold and Bronze Medal in the North American Brewers' Association competition. This northern Arizona favorite has a consistent nutty flavor with just a hint of spice in its depths. A slowly emerging bitterness crops up along the way and is unobtrusively incorporated into the smooth flow. It finishes with a gentle nuttiness and spiciness.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a nonic glass.

A: Clear, light brown color with one finger of parchment-tinted foam head. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Deeply toasted malt is well established, with little else to detract from its traditional qualities save for a fine herbaceous thread that gives added depth.

T: Begins barely off-dry, with cocoa-inflected weak brown malt that lacks the intensity established in the smell. Malt flavors drop off shortly into the middle, becoming more refined with a suggestion of residual sugar. The finish harbors charcoal, mild green plant stems, and a distinct bitter thread not encountered previously in the profile.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, smooth on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This beer is a fair "desertized" version of an English brown ale. According to the label on the bottle it is 5.5% abv, which leads one to question why it is even that strong when delicious home-brewed English browns have been encountered on more than one occasion which fell more in the 4% range. Like many beer styles brewed in the American desert Southwest, its qualities position it to be refreshing. With that in mind, it is far from being a failure.

Poured out of the bottle. Color and overall appearance was promising with a nice tan head. Some toasted notes in the nose, but not as nutty as I would have expected. I found the flavor to lack complexity, especially in the malt character and minimal contribution from the yeast. Perhaps the sample had been on the store shelf too long

Mahogany, tea-like, up to the light. 1/2 a finger of eggshell head that fades fast with minor spotty lacing. It does smell like roasted nuts, so that's a good sign. Also a bit of that classic brown ale smell, but not a dark roasted rich smell. Malty and a bit sweet. There is a bit of an off/rotten flavor in this. Malt and bread crust. Average carbonation, dry on finish and medium thin body. Approaching a drain pour because of this nasty rotten meat flavor. Yuck.

Great nut flavour. Enjoyed at the hideaway pizza place in Sedona AZ. Need to try again.
