Notes / Commercial Description:
Petrus Aged Pale is a 100% beer from our foeders. Michael Jackson, the beer hunter, chose the name in the late 1990s – and he was the first to sell this beer in his beer clubs. Today, it is still the reference for sour beers in the US. Petrus Aged Pale has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. Moreover, ever since the start of the brewery, the beer has been used as a blending-beer with other beers to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.

Aged in Oak foeders for over 24 months

Poured into a snifter. A slightly hazy light amber color. A modest white foamy head that slowly settled. Aromas of funky wood, oak, vanilla, and some fruity notes - tart apples and cherries. Moderately sour up front, with earthy, woody notes followed by tart cherries and then a nice citrus note. Dry and crisp on the finish.

330ml Bottle from Good Spirits Co Wine & Beer (Glasgow):
Quite a strong, funky offering that came through with a lot of tart & Belgian yeast to give the beer a zesty, lively feel that was also quite dry. Initially quite a pungent opening, thankfully the beer settled down & mellowed out a little as it was given time to open up & breathe. There was some nice fruits coming through at times, the apple & citrus flavours being particularly enjoyable but there was definitely more alcohol showing nearer the end than I'd have liked from this one. Overall it was quite a pleasant beer that started well but faded ever so slightly nearer the end; it's still one well worth trying though.

Average appearance on this one, nice golden colour with little head retention or lace. Smell is faintly yeasty and woody. Lots of crisp apple, clove and straw. Taste is funky and woody. Dry straw, apple skin, lemongrass, white grape. Not overly sour.

Citrus rind in the finish. Dry, light and crisp. An absolutely solid brew, but I wasn't blown away by this one.

Pours a traditional golden straw color, moderate head that fades rather quickly & leaves a watery lacing. Aroma is very sweet with notes of burnt sugar, candied apple and some grassy notes underneath. Taste is obviously sour-heavy, with the majority coming as a moderate locato b flavor mixed in with wood, leather and some nuttiness / dark fruit from the oak aging. Carbonation / mouthfeel is good. A standard for the style but with so many great sours out there it certainly feels a little quaint.

A - golden body with a fluffy white head that dissipates quickly
S - fruity aroma with some biscuity malt
T - sour & tart with grape, apple, pear, apricot, oak; a little salty & quite acidic with some zesty orange on the finish
M - medium body, higher carbonation; zesty, dry, tart finish
O - I don't think I've had anything like this. Seems like a sour but has some other elements in there that resemble the pale ale. Fun to try!

Poured from the 11.2 ounce bottle into a clear glass chalice. A moderate pour produces a short lived head the dissipates to a solid ring of lace around the edges. The beer is a pale golden color with light carbonation and moderate haze.

The aroma strongly suggests the tartness within, with definite notes of cider and light funk. The flavor has a puckering tartness with some funk and a moderate amount of base bitterness for balance. The sourness lingers into the aftertaste and is especially perceived on the back of the tongue. Notes of semi-dry cider dominate the flavor profile, accentuated by some boozy phenols. The mouthfeel is fairly thin for the ABV.

I bought this as part of a variety six pack for $23-something (steep!). The other beers are blends, and you're supposed to experiment and create your own. It should be fun.
