Poured from a 330ml bottle into a Petrus branded flute glass.

A - A chocolately deep brown in colour, with a cloudy body. The head is minimal, with poor retention.

S - The initial impressions are that of flat coca cola. Molasses, and low malts.

T - There is a slight lambic taste in the background that seem to come through towards the end, which is slightly sour. Maltiness, accompanied by fruits, maybe pears.

M - Dry, and mildly sharp. The body and feel is quite weak.

D - The flavours are interesting but they don't work for me. This is not one of Petrus' best beers, not a scratch on the speciale.

11.2 oz bottle poured into a flute. pours a deep brownish garnet with four fingers of light orangish tan head that retains well and leaves pillowy lacings.

aroma is fruity and lightly sour with notes of cherry and apple. lightly sweet and mostly sour, the brew gives little evidence to its oak aging in the nose, just a very faint wooded character upon a bit of warming..

taste is much different, with caramelized malts up front and only a hint of the sour fruity character that dominated the nose. a bit of sourness gets through on the finish, leaving only a light tartness after the fact. overall the brew overall is well composed, with the fruit and malt working well together on the palate. the sour character seems conspicuously restrained, neither for the better or for the worse.

mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a lightly sweet and tart texture and a finish of residual tartness.

drinkability is good. the brew is mildly complex and catches the palate off guard with the dichotomy between the nose and palate. that being said, the beer is quite drinkable and not too sweet, which works to its benefit. cheers!

This beer pours a slightly hazy dark reddish-brown, with a multitude of fuzzy, creamy off-white head, that leaves spotty lacing as it fades away. It smells of sour fruit - cherry, apples, and sweet grainy malt. The taste is mild earthy, sour fruit, and roasted caramel malt. The carbonation is moderate, the body a little thin, and it finishes with some lingering fruitiness. An interesting beer, but the advertised woodiness doesn't really assert itself, other than in the roasted malt character. The fruitiness becomes a tad cloying, without the hops to keep things honest - overall, a decent brown ale with a minor sour essence.

Pours a cloudy brown. Aroma is slightly sweet with cola-esque qualities. On the palate, it is similar to Coca-cola as well. Hint of oak, vanilla, and prune. Not much tartness or depth which makes it a touch out of balance, leaning a bit too sweet. Enjoyable enough beer, but is seems like a pretty tame Oud Bruin. Entry level stuff.

Poured a brown/amber color into my Chimay glass, producing a nice fluffy 2 and a half inch white head that lingered for a bit and left a lot of lacing. Very impressive!

Aroma was dominated by a funky mildew smell.

A light malty caramel flavor followed by a bitter/tart aftertaste. Must be hops and the initial sour from the aroma.

Medium bodied, well carbonated, but not much effect upon the palate.

Drinkable but the flavors leave something to be desired. Good overall but not something I would go to great lengths to seek out. I think my girlfriend liked this beer a lot more than I did judging from her smile...

Pulled this from my beer cellar and served, chilled, in a Petrus Oud Bruin glass.

No head to speak of, not surprisingly for a sour brown. Deep ruby, no haze.

Smell is slightly acidic/sour, a bit sharp with a deep breath.

Taste is likewise slightly sour, just a hint of sweet.

Mouthfeel is a bit thin, almost watery.

Drinkability is good, I wouldn't mind having a few more on a hot day to quench my thirst.

A lot less sour than I was expecting, but still a beer worth trying.

The appearance is a nice reddy brown with a decent head that fades into just about nothing. The lacing is a bit on the weak side.

The smell and taste were surprisingly tame, not much puckering going on here, just enough to balance with the sweetness from the malt.

The mouthfeel is crisp, nice transitioning between sweet and sour. This adds up to a very drinkable beer.

a decent flanders with a proper look of dark red with a mild murk and a mild head. smell of tart, cherries, and sour apples. taste was a subdued version of that. a bit boozy with a weak malt character. not much horizon in the flavor. rather simple. tart is not assertive. a tad sweet. not much of a wood present either.

11.2 oz brown glass pry-top bottle. Label stamped "39849."

Appearance: Poured into a Maudite tulip. Thin, fast receding off-white/khaki head atop a dark cherry wood, clear brew.

Nose: Sour cherries, baked oats, munich malt, ozone, top soil.

Palate: Clean and crisp acidity keep this beer from every being "malty" despite its color. It almost has czech-pilsner-like edges, with sour raisins and sour strawberries, dried cranberry and dried cherry flavors. There's a little woodiness that I suspect comes out more as the beer warms. A few oxi-notes, but nothing really caramelized.

Notes: A really nice sour brown. A good intro to the world of oud bruin. Not too exotic, not too extreme. Great balance with good carbonation levels and clean edges.

Well, I don't have much experience with this style, but I'm definitely not averse to it and enjoy the various sour styles. This beer pours a dark but somewhat clear brown with a big fluffy beige head that stands strong for some time. The aroma is a bit strange. It smells a bit like a vinegary small brown ale, which I guess it is, but it doesn't pull it off quite well enough. The aroma is interesting but a bit thin and acrid. There are some interesting fruit notes in it and some malt nuttiness, but I much prefer the flavor. The flavor is surprisingly refreshing. It's sweet and sour with a bit caramelized malt. The fruits flavors really shine, like lemons, apricots, grapes and apples brightened up with a dash of vinegar. It's a shame that the bottle is so small and relatively expensive because it seems like an enjoyable pub beer to drink for an evening.

Wow, I've yet to see many examples of this style.

Pours a dark brown color with a two-finger head that fades into my glass.

Aroma is a mix of sour grape/apple and barnyard funk with the aroma of oak as well.

Taste is full of sour apple, grape and barnyard. Yes, barnyard. It's never too sour though and the oak doesn't seem as noticeable in the flavor.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering sour flavors and oak. Beer goes down very well though and is very drinkable for the style.

I like this. I rarely see this style around much so it's always a treat to give it a try. Definitely easy to drink and enjoy.

This is the second Petrus brew that I have tried after the Petrus Tripel. Poured into a Delirium glass, which produced a very dark brown color. The head was minimal and there was very little lace in the glass. Like many Belgian Ales, Petrus gives off a sour scent, but this attribute is only slightly present in the taste. After some initial sourness, the beer quickly fades off and doesn't leave any distinguishable mark. There is nothing offensive about this beer, yet nothing spectacular about it either.

330ml bottle. the bottom of the back has "39562". tasted in early april 2009. poured into tulip.

clear, dark, reddish ruby brown. 1.5 finger, rocky, light tan head, fades to wisps and ring. a few very thin and sparse rings of splotchy lace.

aroma of damp earth and fallen leaves. apple skins. trace of cider, trace of brown sugar and dates. mineral whiff and hif of woody oak.

taste: caramelized malts, brown sugar, cider. again an autumn leaf note to the hops, with mild bitterness and gentle acidity, melding with oak and vinous notes. slightly watery overall however...

ever so slightly thin, but still smooth, with acidic texture at the end. crisp carbonation has moments of fluffiness.

A - Pours a nice dark brown with a decent two finger creamy tan head.

S - Not bad, vinous with a touch of vinegar. Some fruitiness there as well.

T - Fruit vinegar and a touch of funk there. Quite sweet and a little bit of hop bitterness present. Really much more sweet and fruity than expected. I also sense a little bit of vanilla but not much.

M - Medium to thin body and average carbonation make this a refreshing brew with a great mouthfeel.

D - Refreshing, tasty and a something to it. This is a good brew which I am happy to drink a few of.

Poured from a bottle in a tulip glass. Deep, dark brown, appears opaque at first until held to the light, revealing a beautiful ruby glow throughout. A few fingers of light tan tan head that drops to a finger, leaving small spots of lacing. Lots of bubbles all around the edge, which kind of sparkle.

Smells foremost of vinegar, some plum & other dark fruits, & a teeny bit of malt. The sourness is mostly in the aroma -- the taste is sweeter than I expected, carrying fruity notes (mostly apple, some cherry) with just a little tang at in the finish. Very good, the fruits kind of swim around. I keep expecting some oak to poke through, & it almost does, but then no.

Mouthfeel is nice: the body is not too thick or too thin, & the carbonation gently massages the palate. Ahhh. A pleasurable beer, complex without being overpowering. Could sit & sip this all day.

Had on tap at Local 44 in Philly. Poured a purple brown into a tulip with a thick cream colored head. Smell was bitter fruity of raisins and bread. Taste was pungent and fruity similar to a brandy or whiskey. Mellow Belgian hops in the finish. Complex beer definitely worth trying but nowhere near as interesting or tasty as some similar beers.

Poured from a 11.2 oz. bottle into a Moinette goblet.

A - Brown with ruby red highlights. Course tan head falls quickly to a little ring and partial skim layer.
S - Sour cherry notes, pretty big oak.
T - Sour initially but some sweetness comes in quickly. I don't get as much of the sour cherry on the taste but I also get some apple. I'm not getting a ton of complexity on the taste. Oak is there but not like it is on the nose.
M/F - Fairly light in body. Very actively carbonated - a little too much for me. As it warms carbonation becomes a bit more settled and enjoyable. Dry mouthfeel.
D - This one is alright. Probably wouldn't seek it out but not opposed to drinking one.

A: Hazy chestnut brown with frenetic initial carbonation. Soapy cream colored head comes and goes in a flash. Leaves little lace.

S: Maple struck me first, followed by coriander, clove, oak, toffee and even a hint of lemon. A rather complex nose when all is said and done.

T: Starts with a maple sweetness that quickly transitions to bittersweet toffee. The sweetness is balanced by a combination of coriander bitterness and a strong lemon sourness. Finishes tart and sour, with a touch of acidity.

M: Light body is thin and syrupy. Carbonation is on the high side at first, but eventually settles down.

D: This is a decent enough beer. It grew on me as I drank, but lacked that certain something the pushes a beer to the next level.

Like molasses in color, pours with a slightly red-tinged head. Lacing is solid but short-lived.

Reminiscent of a damp basement.

Medium in body. Cushy, micro-fine carb and smooth mouthfeel help make this very drinkable.

This is beer not particularly hoppy or malty. Rather, it seems to derive most of its flavor from a lightly balanced trio of apple, oak, and cherry flavors. The finish is strangely cooling with a hint of iron and unripe cherry.

Surprisingly smooth. Undeniably drinkable. Restrained oak and acidity, coupled with its slightly fruitiness make it a suitable match with say, smoked fish, or braised meat.

Had a bottle with a steak dinner in Ghent. Appears a dark brown with a light tan head. This beer was disappointingly sweet, like big, candy sugar content sweetness with only a bit of cocoa. There's a too-mild sour tang (for the style). While it's not a bad beer, it's a pale example for the style. Still, it wasn't bad with my steak.

No. 6 in my 7-bottle Flanders Oud Bruin tasting session; BB 27/08/09, served cool in a large tulip-shaped wine glass. Note: the beer is said to have aged in oak barrels for 20 months!

A: pours a deeply dark russet brown hue with ruby glows when seen against light, coming with a moderate layer of dark beige froth that settles slowly to a thin cap, on top of a healthy/constant input of light carbonation.
S: pleasantly musty-sour notes plus, guess what, a surprising guest element of banana-esters(!), albeit very restrained. Very different than all the previous ales in this tasting panel, that the aroma is considerably influenced by the bottle-conditioning yeasts and also bears a lovely character of chocolaty dark malts plus black cherry skins (as in a well-aged Porter), at the same time not quite lactic nor berry-ish sour-sweet. A good swirl brings out the quieter edge of prune-ish fruits, but way less pronounced than any other Flemish Oud Bruin or Red Ale I've tried.
T: semi-astringent in the cob-web/musty yeasty department and semi-effervescent upfront, then the palate is opened up with a soothing massage of light dark malts and very subdued black prune tea, in a sense more like a lighter-flavoured, also well-aged English old ale. The palate has very limited vinegary/lactic-sourness on offer as on the nose, while the flavour remains relatively clean and light, finished in the same manner with an extra touch of herbal sweetness and "neutrally-flavoured" elements like crystal malts.
M&D: I suppose the combination of a lack of more assertive sour fruitiness and an additional, unusual mustiness (maybe due to bottle-conditioning instead of just filtering as in most other counterparts) makes this ale stand out from the crowd as an unusual example of Oud Bruin; but this can also play against the overall enjoyment at the expense of expected complexity. All in all, this medium-bodied, smoothly carbonated ale is easy to drink but not as attractive in terms of overall performance.

A: Medium-brown with decent clarity. The head pours thick and slightly off-white with great retention. There is no apparent lacing.

S: A wonderfully complex aroma, with a heavy initial dose of milk chocolate laced with notes of dark and dried fruits. The nose continues with hints of vanilla and some definite oak character from the barrel aging. The beer has that "sour" smell, as expected, but is not overwhelming--the balance is impeccable. No noticeable hop aroma.

T: Dark fruits come to mind with some chocolate as in the aroma. The beer is definitely soured, but blended well to produce an easy-drinking product. Sweet at the introduction, but finishes rather dry with no hop flavor, though there is a mild bitterness in the background--the beer is definitely malt-balanced. The oak aging rounds out the flavor with some notes of wood and helps to smooth out the sourness.

M: Light to medium-light body with mild carbonation that coats the mouth and leaves a tingling sensation on the finish. There is a slight astringency that leaves you puckering a bit (maybe tannins picked up from the wood?).

D: It's a surprisingly drinkable beer (one of my favorite beers is the Rodenbach Grand Cru, a Flanders Red Ale, and though I love it, you can't drink to much of it in a session--I guess I was expecting something similar). I think I'll definitely be buying this one again and I highly recommend it!

Inviting-looking reddish/chestnut-brown body with a rich, clingy, slowly receding light tan head.

Smells of tart apples, lemon, unripe strawberries and a pastoral mustiness (hate to say barnyard or horse-blanket, but there you go). Maybe some hints of sharp cheese in the nose too.

Tastes more sweet/tart than actually sour. A little bit of puckery tartness on the intake, but gives way to an unexpected candylike finish. Not exactly what I was anticipating, but pleasant enough.

Moutfeel is somewhat thin but with nice fizziness to make it seem alive.

Very easy to drink and interesting enough to have again, but I was hoping for something legitimately sour.

Dark translucent brown with a fizzy lacing on top. Smell is vinegar, sour apple (or maybe other fruit), and raisin. Taste is is not nearly as sour as I expected wit even a slight sweetness mixed in at the front. It is very watery and mild with a sour raisin finish. Although seemingly lacking complexity, it is an easy drinker and could possibly make a session beer if the style suits your tastes.

I wasn't too impressed with this as I've remembered others in the style being much more interesting.

Nice head that disappeared when I blinked, whispy lace.
Smells Belgian sweet, apple and sour citrus. But really it's hard to smell a damn thing. Pretty mild, unfortunately.
Taste is a little better, pleasant, but still pretty subdued. Tiny hint of yeast and spice, sweet and sour, more heavy fruit than anything else. This tastes like a weak dubbel. Better yet, after sitting for about 15 minutes, it tastes like a flat Coca-Cola. In that time, the carbonation went from soda-like (too much) to being almost nonexistent.

Nothing stellar here. I love Petrus Aged Pale, think I'll be sticking with that.
