And I'm being generous. First off, for those expecting the opposite, I love this style. The problem is, this beer has nothing to offer. I'm a judge and know my brews quite well, a blind tasting would've *maybe* gotten me in the neighborhood. It looks like muddy water and tastes faintly of wood.

Brown color with ruby hues, clear. Foam beige, medium-sized, short-lived.
The aroma of wine. Red wine is the leading note in this beer is dry. additionally in the background delicate floral and fruity accents.
Taste dry, again guilty, cherries and grapes are the main theme of taste. The beer is moderately sour sweet and slightly "wooden".
Gentian low, seasoned. Saturation average.

Enjoyed in a snifter via a friend from work---Thanks Tony!

This nice bruin pours a clear mahogany color with a modest head that quickly dissipates to a thin light ring with subtle lacing. Nose of light oak, tart cherries, and light candy malts. Flavors follow the nose with subtle light cherries and tart blackberry notes on the front and sides touched with light sweet candy malts. Oak rears it head on the back with a light sweet yet lightly tart finish. Decent mouth feel, light and coating with very light carbonation. Nice for the style. Not my favorite of the Petrus line, but one of the most easily found oud's on the market that is solid for the style.

Cheers

Dark reddish brown with a touch of haze. Head foamed up but settled quickly. Smells of sour strawberry, raspberry, leather and rich wet oak. Vinegar aroma hangs in the nose long. The beer starts with a woody leathery toasted malt taste with a light gamey yeastyness but quickly opens up with mildly sour cherries, strawberry and raspberry. A strong carbonation lends to a crisp graphite and steel finish. The finish is light and tingly with a sweet and sour red berry aftertaste; carbonation eliminates any malt sweetness. Nice drinkable Belgian oude bruin. Possibly too fruity to session as the sweetness of the fruit builds, but enjoyable and mellow with s touch of sour.

MJ's "Great Beers" recalls quite a bit about De Brabandere as he seemed to have a special relationship with them. I summarize what he said about Oud Bruin "big head, mahogany color, a full flavour with rich, soft, chocolatey notes, vanilla oakiness, dessert apple fruitiness, passion fruit and restrained acidity. The big finish reminds me of Armagnac" Somehow, that is not my model review.
But his 1999 "Guide" is more like MJ's style: he gave it 2.5 stars of 4 and said "fresh, fruity, iron-tasting, oaky." That, I can remember.

Listed in the "!001", you can make the argument that Petrus' Oud Bruin should not be there. And I would not argue with you.

Beyond that, I don't need to review. Other fine reviews have gone before me and, besides, I am biased against the style.

De Brabandere "Petrus Oud Bruin"
25.4 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, corked & caged
$8.99 @ Cherry Hill Wine, Liquor & Beer, Cherry Hill, NJ

Appearance: Clear mahogany brown body beneath a short but dense head of light tan that drops shortly to an average collar but leaves some nice lacing behind. As it goes, more spots and streaks of lace are left.

Aroma: Ripe red and dark fruit with some cherry. Background woodiness and funky vinegar-like acidity.

Flavor: Some dark malt that's not quite clear... it is a brown ale after all, but it doesn't display "chocolate" or "soft roast"... perhaps the closest things I can find are soft cocoa, cereal grain, and perhaps some minor burnt sugar and subtle dark caramel. Dark-skinned fruits (mainly raisin, but also a suggestion of cherry), some earth/dried leaves, underlying aged herbal sweet vermouth and/or Balsamic vinegar, and an occasional note of passing coconut. Somewhat tart/lactic/acetic and thus dry, but laying like oil on water over a sweetness below it somehow comes out completely balanced.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and gently effervescent with a very fine-bubbled, slightly elevated carbonation that's seemingly natural (but most likely is not).

Overall: A classic, although perhaps not the finest example of the style. Highly recommended.
