Poured from 330mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich and hazy dark brown hue with two fingers of pillowy ivory foam. Head seems to dissipate somewhat quickly. Not bad.

Smell: nutty and caramelly malt aroma with just a hint of tartness. Not complex, but nice.

Taste: good malt flavor with bread and caramel flavors. Tartness is present but not overwhelming, and bitterness is balanced toward the end. A very pleasant brew.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a good level of carbonation. More fizzy than creamy, but combined with the tartness I think this makes for a refreshing beverage.

Overall: a tasty beer which is very drinkable. If this were available on tap around here I'd be quaffing it all the time, no doubt.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle stamped 41345. Sampled on June 23, 2013.

The color is attractive with its reddish-amber pour. Along with that comes a tremendous silky beige head.

The aroma is of vinegar, yeast, and milder malts. A vague sort of sweetness creeps into the nose as well.

The body is light to medium with an acidic texture.

The taste is sour and malted but not too sour. A lingering bitter finish.

A: Ruby-brown, plenty of off-white head, very little retention, but some nice lacing.

S: Sour grapes, bready malt.

T: Initially slightly sweet, fruity, grapes, bready malt, fading to a wonderfully refreshing, slightly tart aftertaste. Very smooth and well rounded (20 months in oak!).

M: Light to moderate body, moderate to high carbonation.

D: Very drinkable. Especially considering the style.

This is not like any brown from the States. Good carbonation and head, deep ruby red color. Its aged 2 years in oak casks and this must give it the sweet/sour viney taste. Tiny bottle - 8.4oz for $2.69.

Pours a genuinely pleasant red-brown colour, quite clear, but lusciously coloured. Head is consistent and frothy, a very light-brown tinged with pink. Lacing is thick-bubbled and sudsy. Carbonation is very fine and very languid. Overall, it looks damn good.

Nose is sweet, with vanilla custard dominant, although there's a slight oak and acidity coming through as well. Some vinous characters, and some earthy wood. The sweetness is surprisingly strong, however, and it mellows the other characters very nicely.

Taste, is really, extremely disappointing. There's almost no hint of oak or acidity, and the sweetness only exists as a phantasm on the palate, leaving the main event to an empty watery character, and a slightly metallic copper bitterness. Very faint bite on the back, but not even a round Belgian character to finish it up, just that metallic note. It's not unpleasant, but it's very tame and very disappointing.

Feel is also very flat, despite the nice-looking carbonation and the hint of depth to the body.

Extremely disappointed in this one. I hear the Aged Pale is better, but it would have to be. This doesn't even exhibit the classical Belgian characteristics which would give it an edge, and for an Oud Bruin, I expected a lot more.

Certainly not a bad beer, and certainly one I'd drink happily if it were available, but also as certainly not something extravagant and special.

Serving type: bottle.

Pours a dark brown color with a thin fizzy beige head that quickly dissapears without any lacing.. Strong aroma of oaky wood, chocolate maltiness and dark fruit. Tart and very sweet tasting., with the oakinees dominating and overpowering the other flavors. More sour than I prefer.

No. 6 in my 7-bottle Flanders Oud Bruin tasting session; BB 27/08/09, served cool in a large tulip-shaped wine glass. Note: the beer is said to have aged in oak barrels for 20 months!

A: pours a deeply dark russet brown hue with ruby glows when seen against light, coming with a moderate layer of dark beige froth that settles slowly to a thin cap, on top of a healthy/constant input of light carbonation.
S: pleasantly musty-sour notes plus, guess what, a surprising guest element of banana-esters(!), albeit very restrained. Very different than all the previous ales in this tasting panel, that the aroma is considerably influenced by the bottle-conditioning yeasts and also bears a lovely character of chocolaty dark malts plus black cherry skins (as in a well-aged Porter), at the same time not quite lactic nor berry-ish sour-sweet. A good swirl brings out the quieter edge of prune-ish fruits, but way less pronounced than any other Flemish Oud Bruin or Red Ale I've tried.
T: semi-astringent in the cob-web/musty yeasty department and semi-effervescent upfront, then the palate is opened up with a soothing massage of light dark malts and very subdued black prune tea, in a sense more like a lighter-flavoured, also well-aged English old ale. The palate has very limited vinegary/lactic-sourness on offer as on the nose, while the flavour remains relatively clean and light, finished in the same manner with an extra touch of herbal sweetness and "neutrally-flavoured" elements like crystal malts.
M&D: I suppose the combination of a lack of more assertive sour fruitiness and an additional, unusual mustiness (maybe due to bottle-conditioning instead of just filtering as in most other counterparts) makes this ale stand out from the crowd as an unusual example of Oud Bruin; but this can also play against the overall enjoyment at the expense of expected complexity. All in all, this medium-bodied, smoothly carbonated ale is easy to drink but not as attractive in terms of overall performance.

Aged 20 months in oak barrels.

A: Poured a dark ruby red with a thin off tan head. Visible carbonation was soft.

S: some sweet raisiny and caramel aroma with some burbon on nose with a touch of sourness.

T: dark fruit (raisins, cherries) with a light woodiness and sourness. The flavor was vinous with some grapes, and alcohol warming.

M: light, smooth, with a strong carbonation, and dry finish. A little thin.

D: good drinkability. Overall a good example per style.

A-This beer pours a deep hazel brown with a crystal clear body. It has strong carbonation and a big creamy dark tan head.

S-This beer has a sour sherry smell to it. I don't notice a lot of other aromas and it smells pretty clean.

T- This has a slight sweetness with some sourness to it and flavors of dark fruit like black cherries and raisins. The oak flavor is very faint and has a watery taste to it.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel that has some fizz to it.

D-I don't know if the long aging process really mellowed this beer but there is not a lot of complexity. I believe most Flanders browns are not usually aged in oak but it makes this one very smooth and drinkable. However a lot of the malt profile is just not there.

A deep brown beer with reddish hues and a decent head of foam.

Notes of candi sugar, yeast, and a light tartness in the smell.

Some of the brown ale hits my palate to start. Followed by a wee bit of the candi sugar, yeast, and a very mild sour taste or two.

Light body and lots of carbonation make for a so so mouthfeel.

Very boring brew.

330ml Bottle from the Las Vegas Whole Foods for $5

Appearance - Burgundy/brown colour with an average size fizzy/frothy beige head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some faint lacing. The head lasted for 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, wood, vinegar

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, citric notes and raspberries/cherries. There is also some vinegar, wood, and it ends with a lightly tart aftertaste.

Overall - Not as much barrel/wood type flasvour as I was expecting. Also not as tart/sour as most beers within this style. Flavours are nice though and it is easy to drink.

Lemony cherry nose with traces of barnyard. Pours brilliant chestnut under a 2” fluffy tannish off-white cap that dissipates to a thick film. A tart lemony citrus cherry palate with traces of chocolate hints of fruitcake. Moderately high finely bubbled carbonation with a medium body. Juicy and refreshing.

A-Pours a toasted caramel color. Hints of ruby. Body is clear. Head is fluffy and off-white. The head dies down to a jagged layer of froth. Plentiful lacing.

S-Tartness derived from dried fruit aromas. Lactic and oaky. Lingering sweetness. Yeasty and a bit musty. High in lactic aroma.

T-Far less tart than the nose. More of a basic flavor here. Brown maltiness, wet toast and yeast. Far lighter notes of oak. Less tart and lactic. Sweet, ripe fruits. Fruit leather rolls. Soggy toasted malts and residual sweetness.

M-Medium bodied. Almost light bodied. Soft creaminess with buzzing carbonation. Semi-dry. Drinkable enough.

O/D-Not super tart or funky but that is okay because I don't think I would have liked an ramped-up version of what the nose was offering.

Fairly underrated brew. The aroma does not nearly match the flavor. Melanoidins, sweet, toasted bread, caramel, dominate. Flavor is fairly dark malty and sweet, but there's a nice tart, lactic finish to contrast.

Found this at one of my local places mixed in with the 15 dollar six pack section. For $2.50 I thought I would make this my second sour I ever had.

A - A nice dark amber brown with a good half inch of tan colored head that turns to a still full lace ring.

S - The fruity aspects of this is mostly lemon and sour funk. Can't really look beyond that to find anything else.

T - Vinegar diluted to about 6% is what I taste along with some lime bitterness and a sweet finish which reminds me of sugar on a grapefruit. Surprisingly not very bitter cloying as hoppy beers in the finish.

M - Medium bodied and surprisingly smooth.

Overall it's still one and done since the sourness leaves my whole throat so very dry... Glad to have a sour that drank so sooth.

Mostly clear, deep coppery/chestnut red. Thin, very light brown head. Aroma consists of roasted malts, acidic berry-like, bit of ripe dark fruit, and some vinous character. Maybe some tobacco as well. Dark malts and fruit hit the palate first, followed closely by delicate sourness. Earthiness comes out towards the end, along with a hint of chocolate, and the dry finish is on the sour side. Light body with a moderately high carbonation. Texture is very interesting... very smooth, aided by the carbonation, with some mouth puckering due to the sourness.

Interesting beer and easier to drink than I expected. A little out of the ordinary and quite tasty.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a brown color with tinges of red. Thick consistency. Not a huge amount of head, but some good lacing.

S: A very sweet, fruity smell, mixed with some maltiness.

T: Like the smell, the taste is very sweet - but also very sour. Apples, grapes, malt and even a slightly nutty aspect. An unusual taste, but pretty complex.

M: A fairly well-carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Medium- to full-bodied.

D: On the whole, this is a drinkable beer. I'm not that familiar with this style, but it does seem like an interesting one.

11.2oz bottle poured into a stemmed glass.

(A)- Gusher! Pours a deep and dark mahogany color with some reddish highlights. Produced a great eggshell colored head with good retention. Lots of lacing.

(S)- A dry earthy vinegar-like fruit tartness. Very lightly funky in a lactic sense.

(T)- Similar to the smell. A nice dry earthy-like dry oak with some tart fruits and a mild vinegar bite.

(M)- A great carbonation level and balance. Milder that I anticipated, but is smoother and easier on the palate without sacrificing any flavor.

(D)- For the money, a great bang for your buck style-wise. Smooth and easy drinking, while still fitting the style well. Quite sessionable when you are looking for a Oud Bruin.

Pours a deep reddish tinted brown, minimal head but active bubbles. Scent leads with dark, vinous fruit, some brown sugary sweetness with the faintest hints of earthy funk and damp wood. Taste brings the fruit but lacking in tartness or acidic sharpness expected in style, sugary sweet malts, but not overly powerful, light caramel, notes of damp oak and earth on the back end. Medium bodied, moderately bubble. Decent beer, but not the best representation of the style.

Smell: wood, sour mix, and grain

Taste: wood, toasted malt, slight sour mix, dark sweet fruit--maybe black cherry

Mouthfeel: super smooth, nice sweet and sour mix. high carbonation, dry, light

Drinkability: This beer is now in my top 10. I love the sourness combined with the woodiness. I have not had anything that tastes like this before. This is my favorite sour beer post my Eulogy trip to Philadelphia. The low abv means I could have several.

Wow, I've yet to see many examples of this style.

Pours a dark brown color with a two-finger head that fades into my glass.

Aroma is a mix of sour grape/apple and barnyard funk with the aroma of oak as well.

Taste is full of sour apple, grape and barnyard. Yes, barnyard. It's never too sour though and the oak doesn't seem as noticeable in the flavor.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering sour flavors and oak. Beer goes down very well though and is very drinkable for the style.

I like this. I rarely see this style around much so it's always a treat to give it a try. Definitely easy to drink and enjoy.

Pours brownish red, with virtually no head but a little bit of lace. Smells sour, but with a malty sweet aroma? Doesn't make sense but thats what I smelled. Taste is sweet malt, with a sour middle thats not overpowering. Body is rather full with good carbonation, a pretty decent beer although not really my style. Thanks DrJay.

One of those murky homebrew looking beers, a mix of a dull red with brown, resulting in a ruby hue to brown liquid that is far from approaching clarity. Aroma is soggy wood and mild sour notes.

Taste, decent, woody pale ale and oud bruin type of mix. Tastes almost exactly like the aged pale, and I believe the label or promo gear states something to that effect that one beer is a percentage of the other. Slight vinegar in the mouthfeel. Kinda thin body, well carbed, underperforms with the sour and tartness, isn't balanced, leans with an american brown ale vibe at times moreso than oud bruin.

If you're buying this for sour factor, you're probably going to be disappointed, unless you truly like it as just one of the elements of a beer, as opposed to a dominant or appreciable element to any sufficient degree.

A - Pours a nice dark brown with a decent two finger creamy tan head.

S - Not bad, vinous with a touch of vinegar. Some fruitiness there as well.

T - Fruit vinegar and a touch of funk there. Quite sweet and a little bit of hop bitterness present. Really much more sweet and fruity than expected. I also sense a little bit of vanilla but not much.

M - Medium to thin body and average carbonation make this a refreshing brew with a great mouthfeel.

D - Refreshing, tasty and a something to it. This is a good brew which I am happy to drink a few of.

Ruddy red and brown appearance, not quite still life pour, but it really wasn't the prettiest beer. 1/7" head is shy and quickly disappears. You get those wood and mild sour notes in the aroma, didn't pick up anything acetic here.

Taste was seemingly a bigger blend of fresh beer instead of tart/sour blended with it. Very mild. Woody, hops aged, some acetic acid, highly carbonated, thin brown malts.

Its a neat little foray into the past, but ultimately I'd rather have something like New Glarus's old world porter or whatnot if I want to see how beer was blended fresh with the infected stuff from yesteryear.
