Appearance: a lovely amber pour, clear, with a medium foamy white head.

Smell: the nose is quite nice...sweet hints caramel and mild spice. good dose of maltiness.

Taste: what happened here? the nose was promising, the taste is a disappointment. A little hoppy off the top with a hald decent malty backbone. the sweetness is toned down and there a small nuttiness in the body. as well as a metallic, tin kinda taste. not good. a real lack of comlexitiy as all of the flavors and smells fade awfully fast leaving the finish bland.

Mouthfeel: bubbly but very light in body. a dryness towards the finish.

Drinkability: nt that "speciale" after all.

Pours a cloudy medium orange amber with a nice 2 finger white head that very slowly melts to a craggy, very sticky white lacing.
Aromas are Belgium yeast, Orange, and Lemon.
Flavor is disappointingly lacking in dimension. Sharp citrus flavors that border mostly on lemon with only a hint of sweet malt and little else for me...maybe a little spice.
Mouthfeel is too bubbly with sharp carbonation.
Aftertaste is clean and fresh, but still lacking in dimension.

A: Poured a medium orange with some amber hues topped off by an off-white heads that lacked both retention and lacing.

S: slightly fruity and yeasty with some light floral scents.

T: The initial flavor was malty with some citrus and fruit (pears). There was a nice dry hoppiness and malting in the beginning which soon gave way to a fade and finish of sweet oranges. Overall the taste was very clean and smooth from start to finish.

M: a tad thin with strong carbonation.

D: Take it or leave it. Ok drinkability but really nothing speciale.

Bottle - Poured a red brown beer with a nice huge head with above standard retention. Carbonation is great with floral aroma. Medium body with sweet taste. A bit disappointed with that one, the spice mix is almost non-present and the body is too light with a bit of a watery aftertaste. Note: I find it a bit weird that this beer from a Belgium brewery has only been review so far by Canadian BA...

Pours out like weak iced tea. Slight orange tint and pretty clear.
The head is white and 1 finger with lots of larger bubbles.
the smell is very subtle. Orange peel and yeast with just a slight fruity aroma.
Dirty flavors abound here. Can't discern what dirt though.
Taste like there is something wrong with the beer. This could be a bad batch.
Mouthfeel is clean but there is nothing here.

One of the six Petrus beers from a gift pack, this one pours a clear amber color with a pertinent light tan frothy head that after depletion leaves a fine veil of lace upon the glass. Nose has a crisp citrus like front wit ha bit of malt at the back; start is somewhat sweet, nice grain presence and the top light to moderate in feel. Finish is sternly acidic, the hops benign in their spiciness, desert bone dry, and a fine brew to start off a Sunday afternoon of sampling.

This beer poured a cloudy brown color with a thick white head – tight bubbles and nice lacing. The aroma is initially spicy with the smell of malt noticeable after a moment. The taste is spicy and sour at first sip followed by some slight malt and hop flavors. The mouthfeel is thin to medium. I’d consider this a drinkable beer – would be a nice change on occasion.

Poured a nice dark amber colour with little head and small lace on the sides of the glass.

The taste was some what sweet but with a real hoppy flavour to it. It was nice enough better than most in comaprioson with other simliar beers. But I have had better as well. Nothing to "special".

I would recomend it.

Pours an amber body, creamy head, good retention, and nice lacing. Aroma is uninteresting. Faint hops, floral/herbal but not much else. It's astringent, hoppy, floral, spicy and has a good amount of bitterness. Carbonation is strong, like a soda water. Quite drinkable, but this is no belgian ale. Seems to be mis-categorized here on BA, but it's quite drinkable.

Petrus Speciale Ale pours a pretty, subdued rust color with a delicate lacy head. Aromas are fairly fruity, with apples, plums, and some citrus notes present. On the palate, though, things flatten out a bit, with little of the interesting fruits in the nose making their way into the body. Some sourness is in there, kind of like you get in some English pale ales. Mild sweetness. Mouthfeel is a touch on the thin side, not unpleasantly so, but the mouthfeel adds to the "where's the beef?" feeling I get from this one. Overall, an unoffensive Belgian that also lacks character.

This beer pours a golden color with a creamy head which is sticking to the glass.

Smell is malty with some cork and wood, like it has been aged on oak or something. Also some hops com through.

Taste is slightly acidic and dry. A slight bitterness and dry aftertaste mark this beer. Again the wood comes through, and I think this inhibits drinkability a little bit. Overall a good beer, which I would review as a blond or belgian pale ale, not as a dark ale. Who made that up?

Poured into glass chalice:

Pours hazed amber with a foamy, off-white head that thins and stays around for the duration. Trailing lace slides down the glass.

The smell is earthy, with grainy, slightly carmelized, notes. A hint of coriander and lemon peel is there, albeit very subtly.

The taste is of carmelized grain with earthy notes. Malt-accented with earthy hop bitterness. "Belgian" does not really come to mind, though there is a faint touch of coriander and lemon zest. Some metallic notes come through in a bitterish finish.

Something acidic/slightly metallic in the aftertaste with a body that borders weak, but has a touch of creaminess. It does go down pretty easily and is not as bad as my description may sound, but it lacks the flair of a Belgian Dark Ale - English Ale (Bitter?) comes to mind - though it doesn't really fit there either, as there is some touch of coriander...Regardless of style, it's nothing "special".

A very pretty brew that arrived with a two finger head over a lighter than anticipated amber colour. The crown quickly left to a thin lace, frothy ring and exceptional cling.
Carbonation moderate.
Body is medium/full.
Aroma initially a field of wild flowers but that too quickly left.
Taste had a hoppy edge to it, a malt presence to balance but lightly. I also detect a citrus presence midway through but short lived...oranges I think.
Wish I had a few more of these.

Clear golden bronze color with a nice full light tan head and light carbonation that leaves nice lace sheets. Light malt, light spice, and light plastic (?) aromas. Similar flavors with a balance that's just a bit off ... plasticized. Medium bodied with a dry malty finish.

Not sure I'd have again.

The pour is deep copper-amber colored, with a thin milky ring on top. It's making my glass look like a snow globe, or OJ with large pulp, with tons of HUGE, flaky sediment floating everywhere. I literally have never seen so much sediment, nor larger flakes, in any beer, ever. It's like a Belgian Monk scratched all his dry scalp into the beer. Kinda grossed out but more impressed than anything.

Aromas of baked grains, deep caramel and toffee, and molasses.

Flavors are more of the same, with some bread, fig, molasses, caramel, baked grain, and a touch of witty citrus.

Feel is sticky from the start, with plenty of carbonation, with a smooth, semi-dry finish.

Overall, this isn't bad at all. Again, the spectacle of the body made me shoot video of it. Insane. The aromas and flavors are there, I don't understand the low ratings.

Poured from the bottle to a Petrus glass that came with the gift pack.

Looks good, nice brownish red brew with lots of lacing and minimal head. Smell is acidic, not terrible but nothing great either. Taste is good, malty and mild. Mouthfeel is unoffensive, not overly carbonated, pretty smooth. and pretty drinkable too. Not a bad choice.

This is a pale ale (certainly isn't dark).

250mL bottle, Best Before 31/01/07.

A: Golden-bronze with an off-white head. Not a lot of retention, but it leaves a nice lace.

S: A slightly wild and woody tart fragrance. A little bread and fruityness in the background.

T: It seems like this pale ale might recieve the same conditioning as their Old Brown. Probably a base of Pilsner malt, with a little caramelized sugar. Perfect bitter/sweet balance, with a clean, crisp finish. Yeast provides a little spice and a slight hint of tartness. Finish is dry. Quite lovely.

M: Light to moderate body is creamy and slightly acidic. Moderate to high carbonation. Exceptional feel.

D: Quite drinkable.

I would argue that this is under-rated, and is indeed Speciale.

Best till 11-03-05 so just in time to see how this beer does. Pours in without much carbonation and its hard to get a head up on the beer. In the glas reasonably clear and has a nice bronze colour. Smell is not much at all, litle oxidation and hardly any malt or yest caracter. Were there ever hops to be smelled? Taste is as dull as the nose was. Water with alcohol and malts being used as well. Dry and litle hoppy aftertaste. Drinkable but far from great!
