330ml bottle - part of a mixed Petrus pack recently made available in Alberta. Rood Bruin is a blend of 1/3 Aged Pale and 2/3 young brown beer (at least I think so, as the label text is kinda hard to read).

This beer pours a clear, dark orange-brick brown colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly fizzy beige head, which leaves some spectacular Swiss cheese pattern lace around the glass as it slowly seeps away.

It smells of woody red wine vinegar, gritty and grainy pale malt, a subtle earthy yeastiness, and faint leafy, herbal, and dead floral noble hops. The taste is grainy and crackery caramel malt, some plum, prune, and red vinous fruitiness, ethereal bar-top nuts, and more well-understated earthy, musty, and floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is adequate in its palate-pleasing frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and actually fairly smooth, once you get acclimatized to the minor tartness inherent here. It finishes trending dry, the woodiness kind of closing up shop

Overall - while this is an enjoyable enough offering, it also comes across as a tad simple for the typically complex style. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think that this would benefit from being a whole lot more sour (fruity, not funky).

Poured into snifter.

Head gives way to a small ring. A ruby brown murk.

Nose: Sourdough rye with underlying cream sweetness.

Taste: Mostly dark sour fruit, Dark malt and caramel.

Mouth: Medium, refreshing and smoothly sour.

Not overly complex, but well balanced. A very enjoyable oud bruin.

Clear dark brown beer with 2-finger off-white head, nice laces.
Smell - raisins, prunes, slightly sour, vinegar.
Taste - slightly sour, wood, hazelnut, moderately sweet, dark malts.
Medium body and carbonation.
Rather simple oud bruin.
