Petrus Speciale Ale is a cloudly, light brown beer with a lumpy ecru head that has great retention and lacing. It has a fruity, estery aroma that's sweet, with notes of dried fruit (raisins) and malt. It is medium bodied, flat and metallic, but reasonably smooth. It's not bounding with flavor. It has decent bitterness and not the sweetness that I anticipated. It's slightly fruity, but it's mostly malt in the taste. The finish is astringent. I think this bottle was around for a while, hence the $1.98.

Thin tan hued head comprised mainly of larger bubbles, little retention, same can be said for any lacing. Bright bronze colored liquid, more of a metallic yellow, rust tint around the rims, average clarity. Malty chocolate and cocoa get up into your nose, some toffee, coffee beans then a turn towards peat, charcoal, cigarette ash rather than any grassiness, brush of orange peel along the mix of apricot, golden raisin, apple, pear fruit scents, pleasing enough to sniff even if it doesn't take any definitive direction. Light-bodied, spreads itself like a thin blanket over the tongue, pervasive presence without the excess weight. Dry texture, the carbonation is average. More grain, bread notes here, the yeastiness is dry as well, deli rye or pumpernickel bread. The citrus more lemon than orange and pith with little juice. Better job representing the apricot, yellow apple, pear fruit, suggests honey more than delivers it. Retains traces of ashiness but it may just be the overall texture. Semi-watery finish, not a bad quaff but, err, nothing "speciale" here.

Pours cloudy chestnut brown in color with a 2 finger creamy tan head that faded pretty quickly; decent lacing that slides down the glass.

Smells of sweet malt, caramel, honey, light floral hops, grains, orange peel, apple, rum and dark fruits; pretty tame nose for a Belgian.

Tastes of sweet malt, caramel, rum, honey, light hops, yeast, grains, orange peel, sour apple, raisin and dark fruits like plum; the sweet taste seems to tail off bitter as the coriander, yeast or grains take this beer to a mellow rum like state that finishes dry with a slight pucker. I wasn't crazy about the finish, which had a slight metallic twang combined with a bitterness that took away from the sweet complexities of the flavors up front.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with basically no carbonation that fizzles and medium body.

It's an interesting beer that went down smooth and has some nice complex flavors, but something was a little off for my liking; it's a decent beer that's a little sweet for me personally. This was a let down and not very "speciale" at all.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Pours dark amber, black thrown through, with very fizzy white foam. Lacing all over. Apple cider nose - tart. Taste is a mellow ale, some latent tart/souring. Fast finish - off a cliff buzzy carbonation. If you really look for it there is some hop bite at the end. But otherwise an even keeled ale with some creativity mixed in.

From a mix pack. Recommended by Vinnie. Thanks Vinnie! Live review.

A four finger head of thick foam comes to rest as a soapy topper leaving some righteous lace. It's a cloudy beer of dark honey color.

Light vinegar and unripe pear and apple fill out light/med. strength aroma. There's a sourdough bread note here as well, some other more rounded tart yeast smells.

Quite a strange flavor at first sip. Can't really get a handle on it. Seems to be some familiar caramel notes, but they seem, well, Seems to be some familiar yeastiness, but here also unfamiliar "off" notes keep the light tart and even lighter fruit from being tasty. There are some herbal notes, almost like a medicinal root thing going at the end of the sip. It is interesting and has moments of being enjoyable due to its singularity, but it is not delicious, nor bracing, nor memorable.

Somewhat heavy for a BPA, I would score it higher as a BDA, but even there it would not be to style. Med. carb. and fair to middling finish.

What a difference from the quality of the Petrus Aged Pale! Will not revisit this.

Moderately malty nose compared to other models of this kind, one feels as coriander and citrus. Body creamy enough, she does some minimal flavor and finish, which mixes both the cheese, crust and roots, is not very pleasant. A mediocre Speciale Pale...

A- Hazy reddish brown color, little lacing, no much retention.

S- Smells like belgian yeast fruit esters, some sourness. Just hint of the tart in middle.

T-Malt sweetness that has some strange earth tones that i dont care for. Huge disapointment compared to the nose.

M- Syrupy med body.

O- Wasn't into to this at all.

From a bottle into the appropriate glass.

Pours a very clear dark gold with an eggy colored dense foam on top. Good retention and lacing.

Rather boring and pale in the nose, but not bad. Some hints of the noble hops that float around in these beers, but I don't grab any Saaz. Slightly floral, not much dense malt character.

There's nothing objectionable, but this beer suffers from a serious lack of backbone. The malt is very hard to get in the drink - but there's some there. It's really less of the bold Belgian pale, but rather like a very interesting pilsner. Either way, I'm not hating this, but at the price...

Very, very light. The lack of malt gets replaced with a watery flavor, and with the herbals in the flavor, there's a slight watery thing - reminiscent of the fizzy water I love. But, aside from that, there's a great light body to it, which is often overlooked.

Too expensive for the quality. If they'd knock off 2 or 3 bucks, it would be a fun pair with something like shrimp scampi or something like it.

12oz bottle poured into a Samuel Smith tulip.

Appearance: ruby orange with thick, foamy white head and silky lacing.

Aroma: apples, cider, bananas and cloves.

Flavor: Belgian yeasts, tart apple, honey and herbs.

Mouthfeel: medium body and medium carbonation.

Overall impression: sweet, tart and sour, this is a tasty BPA.

This came in a special variety six-pack at total wine. It pours to a reddish yellow color with a bit of head retention. The aroma is rather sweet, I couldn't pick out many of the scents though, the taste is also rather sweet with a yeasty taste. There is an alcoholic flavor, but it is not overwhelming to the rest of the beer.

Poured from a 355 mL bottle into a tulip. I cannot tell what the beer's age is, but based on my experience, perhaps its past its prime? No idea.

A: Hazy brown body, some carbonation is visible but it's not really visible, and a lot of suspended 'stuff.'

S: Has a sweet but clean smell, like drying apples and caramel.

T: Slightly sweet flavor, dry caramel malts, hints of apples. The carbonation is gentle, but it seems to interfere with the base malt flavors, never letting them fully expand on the palate. There is a hint of something metallic or sulfurous, not strong or distinct, but it is in the taste. Clean finish.

M: Medium to heavy moth feel, gently carbonated, no distinct alcoholic feel on the tongue.

O: The carbonation interferes with the flavors of the malt in the front. Then there is a metallic or sulfurous flavor note that comes in and begins to mess with the middle and finish. As the beer warms a bit things get better, but not by much. This is drinkable, but not awesome.

33cl into a tulip. Pours a nearly transparent dark apple cider, negligible head and lacing.

Aroma is of honey coated sweet figs on a bed of caramel.

Flavor lacks definition, some sweets some drys some tart below the surface. The watery aftertaste is flattered only by the complimentary thin bodied watery mouthfeel.
