Anyone who is crap at reading Maps, and simply who wants to sample plenty of beers without wearing away too much shoe leather, is well catered for in Antwerpen. You only need to find Reynderstraat & Vlasmarkt, and you can easily do 20 establishments without leaving these streets alone.

The partially cobbled street of Vlasmarkt was cold, gray & wet on my last visit. The fact that so many Bars are almost next to each other, just proved too much of a temptation to keep out of the bad weather.

After visits to other Vlasmarkt establishments; Rooden Coninck (#31), De Ware Jacob (#19) & Stamineeke (#23), we headed to the next door Plaisante Hof(#25-27). I first came here in 1996 on warm-ish Spring day, but not since. A re-visit was called for.

The Plaisante Hof is actually a large courtyard bar, and as the street number suggests, this is actually two buildings knocked into one. Entered through a white painted archway on Vlasmarkt, which has the name of the Bar in Gold Lettering above it, it is usually also marked with a few boards & wooden signs outside on the pavement. As you walk through the archway, you will be greeted by a large mural of Antwerp in front of you painted on a wall. Turn left here into the Courtyard area.

The large courtyard area has many Tables and Chairs, Statues & even a Fountain & is bedecked with lanterns & fairy lights for night drinking. It is very popular on warm days – but during our last visit, lambasted by strong cold winds & driving rain, we headed inside. Only to find NO Customers at all - and the 3 Staff playing Cards. I distinctly remember a laughing bartender standing up & saying, “Aah, you must be English!”

We decided to sit at the bar & peruse the list. Four or Five draft beers were on sale, nothing out of the ordinary, but of course including the mandatory De Koninck. The Beer List had shrunk somewhat over the years I noted, but I recall availability was always a problem here - maybe the beer list is just more ‘honest’ these days. However, it did contain a few surprises. For one, I managed to try a Troubadour and a Dom Blondje from the Brouwerij De Musketiers (which is not strictly a brewery at all). Both were pleasant enough and made the pit-stop worthwhile.

The staff was a very friendly group, and even asked if we fancied joining them for a game of Cards. But we had to be on our way to the next Bar.

To get the best from this Bar it is best to come here when it’s warm!!
