TAP6 Aventinus and Aventinus Eisbock mature for several months in French Oak Chardonnay barrels before they are united to an uncomparable [sic] cuvée.

The maturation in these barriques brings berry-like and pleasantly sour aromas to this elegant and quiet beer. A thrilling transformation of its famous beer of origin. We use different barriques every year and thus, the influence of the aromas varies every year and makes each batch unique.

Enjoy TAPX Aventinus Barrique with rich beef or venison dishes, with desserts like vanilla ice cream and chocolate tart or a rich blue cheese.

Very dark brown brew, hazy, with quite a bit of sediment and yeast at the bottom of the bottle. Topped off by a very firm beige head with excellent retention. Lacing quickly slides down in a Weizen glass.

Remarkably sour brown aroma; the French oak barrels really come through clean and sharp. Vinegar and apples, with some dark fruit. Very little of the traditional Weizenbock aroma I would expect.

Flavor is very balanced, full, and complex. Slightly sweet and thickly bready up front, with the sour component coming in mid-palate, and dominating on the back end. Still, sticky fruit bread flavors - from dark fruit (prunes and raisins) to tarter fruit (cherries and raspberries), with quite a bready malt backbone - provide a very solid base throughout.

Lots of vinegar and oak sour flavors, heavy on tannin, light on vanilla. Reminiscent of a thicker, wheatier Flanders red-brown.

Slick mouthfeel, medium length finish, medium bodied. Stuck somewhere between a sipper (as a sour) and more of a gulper (as a Weizen). A little thin up front, but some sticky puckering retention for a brief spell.

This is really a fantastic sour. I have a feeling that if Russian River put this out, its rating would skyrocket. Since it's Aventinus, it's quite an unexpected flavor profile, but damn is it good.

Purchased at the Bevie for ~$19 for 2014-dated 750 ml capped bottle. Not a great looking beer - murky, semi-translucent, dark muddy brown with floaties and a huge frothy head. Smell is more intriguing with graham crackers, ginger snaps, toffee, caramel, and wine vinegar. Taste is very interesting with complex oaky chardonnay notes mixed into a lightly soured mild Flanders red. Mouth is just right. Overall, this was an expensive bottle but justifiably so - a unique and delicious German beer.

Aventinus is one of my favorite beers. I was really hoping with would be Aventinus with a slight wine barrel element added. It isn't. This is a Flanders Oud Bruin; and as an Oud Bruin it is phenomenal. Still, I hope someday...

I left the sediment in the bottle, so this was a clear, reddish brown. It poured with a short lived, fizzy white head.

Flanders in the nose, a bit on the subdued side which is fine with me. Strong vinegar aromas but some vibrant berries keep things interesting. Plenty of wine and a surprisingly strong but well incorporated oakiness. No weizenbock here.

This has an approachable level of tartness/sourness, but it isn't lacking in depth in any way. The berry to vinegar ratio was close to even in the nose, but the berries are more prominent on the tongue. The wine barrel notes are not subtle at all, plenty of oak and long, vinous finish. The role of the base weizenbock has been relegated to a chewier than is typical for an Oud Bruin mouthfeel.

I loved this beer as is and if it wasn't around a dollar an ounce I would buy more. God I would love to try a raspberry or cherry infused weizenbock from these wheat wizards someday.

2014 bottle.Pours into my Aventinus glass a russet brown color with a thinner very quick to fade head,nice color but no head really to speak of..Some sour cherry and brown sugar notes in the nose wich is a pretty nice contrast,Iam a bit surprised at the sourness really.Not a fan of the flat mouthfeel it really takes away from the flavors of the beer.Somewhat tart and sherry like on the palate with some nuttiness and brown sugar notes as well.I really thought this was gonna be alot better,somewhat disappointed with this one.

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is one of those odd beers that I just never got around to. Strong and malty... you need to be in the mood for it. It's got a hang tag around the neck and the neck label reads "Limited Edition 2014". It was easy to pour though, all of the sediment was pretty well stuck to the bottom of the bottle. It's a hazy chestnut brown beneath a creamy head of khaki. The aroma is quite interesting. It's reminding me of an old bruin or Flander's red. This was aged in Chardonnay barrels so there should be some fruit to it, and there's definitely some oak. I get some of the Aventinus malt as well but it takes a back seat. Let's see if that's true for the flavor as well... yes indeed. I'm not sure if this was initially like this or if it's turned in the bottle but it's sour. Ha! If it was supposed to be like this I could have drank it long ago! I love beers like this. It's got notes of plum, dark raisin, fig, red grape, red wine... and it hints at cherry but never really gets there. There might be some sweet red berry. It's surprisingly tart, tarter than many old bruins or Flander's reds, although I shouldn't make that comparison because I have no idea what this was intended to be, that's just the comparison that immediately comes to mind. I certainly wouldn't think of it as a weizenbock, and I know that Schneider has been branching out but I had no idea Germans made beers like these. The new, smaller German craft brewers that are currently popping up have a lot to live up to if they want to try their hands at something like this! But back to the beer. It's acidic, vinous, and somewhat sharp in the mouth but the moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation is smooth and doesn't add any brashness. I'd call the body light-medium, or maybe even medium-light. There is some malt there and it brings a soft caramel note with a dusting of cocoa powder that rounds it out. It finishes vinous, acidic, and dry with lingering dark fruit and drying oak. Wow, that's an impressive beer. It's amazing that Aventinus and Aventinus Eisbock could be transformed into this. Stunning!

Purchased at the LCBO for around the $7.00 mark or so for a 750ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a tulip

A- Opens well and pours a 1/4" high white head that is gone in a minute or two. Nice dark brown chunky texture. Lovely.

S- Sour. Super tart soury good.

T- Tart and bitter. Sour. Nice. Citrus. Abundant yeast. Just a wonderful brew

M- Creamy and tart. I like this one.

O- Very good brew. Not worth cellaring but it is a wonderful break from the usual Not quite a sour but it is good.

Food Paring

This nice brew went well with..... Roast Pork. WOW this was good. The pork was rubbed with rosemary, sage and a touch of thyme. Garlic oil rub and pop into la oven 15mins per pound to start

2014 edition. Bottle opens with a strong pop. Pours an orange brown color with only a half finger of off-white head, small, but lasting. Strong, sour aroma with berry-fruit, a touch of old chewing gum and plenty of oak behind, much more reminiscent of a Flanders than Aventinus or Eisbock. Medium bodied and fairly smooth mouthfeel, with some slight chewiness to it. Tastes tart and sour up front, with red wine character in the middle, and just a hint of gum behind the oak in the aftertaste. This is a very nice beer, but nothing like what I was expecting based on the beers that it's based upon. Definitely something I'd be happy to visit every year.

2014 edition. Poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass. Smells of lactobacillus and sweet malts. Pours a dark, murky, olive color, with a white head that dissipates rather quickly. Minimal head retention, but the white film stays around the edges of the glass as I consume. Tastes of sweet, bready malts up front with a beautiful sour, tart finish. Tastes slick in the tongue witj a prickly tartness to follow. Not your normal weizenbock, but pretty awesome if you're into sour beers. I plan on buying more to age.

This beer reminded me of the joint venture of Weihenstephan and Samuel Adams making the Infinium which was supposed to "unite a new way of thinking about the world of the American extreme". This is that kind of beer; an attempt to show other brewers that the staid Germans can knock off a geeky item or two, if they want. This is not going to be a chewy kind of beer; more sinewy and balanced. $13 is a lot to pay for about 12 oz's, though.

I was expecting a weizenbock similar to Tap 6, but this beer is more like a Flanders oud bruin, with a funky aroma like a farmhouse or lambic beer, and quite sour. A very pleasant surprise.

Aroma of Chardonnay wine, but looks like a Belgian strong dark ale. Taste is a cross between a Belgian quad and an Oud Bruin. Tart and fruity with cherries, grapes, apples and pears. As the label describes, it is very complex. Pity each batch is unique because the 2014 was a grand slam.

2014 edition poured into a teku glass. Pours an auburn/mahogany color with a thin off-white head that lingers on the top. From the second the cap POPS off (and it really pops!), you can already smell sour, fruity characteristics. In the glass, you get a good, powerful scent of grapes, sweet malt, and sourness. The palate follows suit, but is much sharper and more pronounced. You first get a touch of sweetness, and then you get a huge hit of tartness, a bit of tannins, and as you swallow, the wine-like character from the wine barrels lingers in your mouth for a long time, much like wine would. Overall, I'm very happy, albeit surprised, by this. I wasn't expecting that much tartness at all. I was also surprised at how much wine character is in here and how it comes across more like a red wine than how I'd expect a Chardonnay to come across. And you can very clearly understand the influence from BFM, having some characteristics in common with Abbaye de Saint Bon Chien. In sum, I'm very pleasantly surprised with what I've got here.

750ml bottle (2016 edition) - so, Aventinus and the Eisbock, aged in unspecified Swiss wine barrels, and then blended. Hoooo boy!

This beer pours a murky, dark orange-brick brown colour, with one skinny finger of mostly just bubbly and fizzy tan head, which leaves pretty much nil in terms of lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of tart red fruit (maybe some cherries, maybe some tannic dried grapes), a bit of musty woodiness, grainy and doughy caramel malt, further mixed orchard notes, some plain black pepper spice, bruised bananas, and a sense of floral alcohol heat nicely tethered. The taste is more sour dark fruit (plums, cherries, and red grapes), tannins that oscillate between tea and fruit skins, for some reason, vanilla extract, gritty and grainy caramel malt, more bitter than sweet cocoa powder, a touch of earthy funk, wet oak, and a now ill-restrained big boozy sword of Damocles.

The carbonation is quite understated in its neutered-seeming frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and sort of smooth, once one's palate becomes adjusted to the various astringencies kicking about. It finishes trending dry, and very much like a crisp white (or even red, given the complexity) wine.

Overall - wow, I usually feel like I've captured the majority of a brew's attributes by this point, but not here. Lots and lots and lots of stuff going in this beast of a brew. Perhaps the only helpful thing that I can add is: don't go in expecting Aventinus or the Eisbock - this is much more of a Flanders Red Ale sort of thing.
