Consumed on 08.26.06 at The Farmhouse in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.

Deep and cloudy on presentation, this dark brown brew offered a deep and rich head, that later offered excellent retention. Aromas were strong, almost musty with notes of grains and some spice. Smooth and creamy on the palate, the malt body kicks in high gear on contact. Luxurious, almost like high end chocolate, honey, toffee all rolled into one.

A fantastic brew, to be sure. Complex and deep, without a doubt. Do not rip yourself off, be sure to swirl some of the brew around in the bottom of the bottle to ensure you get all of the great yeasties into your glass. Essential. A true treat, whether you love wheat beers or not.

Come on guys, I love this beer to but you can not give it a 5 or even a 4 on appearance. It looks like mud but tastes like a little slice of heaven. I did ding it a little on drinkablitiy due to the alcohol heat but the smell taste and mouthfeel are perfect.

What a great idea, "Lets take an alread intense beer and crank it up a notch or two." I hope they continue to make this, I also hope that someday we get some to sell up here in Oreon.

I tried to hold out drinking this brew. I was saving it for a special occassion but my curiosity got the best of me. Especially since Aventinus is my second highest rated beer I had to try the Eisbock to see if they are a one beer show. They are an outstanding brewery and this is another excellent offering.

Poured into a chalice the head faded fairly quick but there is decent lacing. dark caramel color with yeast present. I like to swirl this around and pour it in at the end.

First drink floored me. Outstanding balance of flavor. Caramel was the most dominant flavor but it has some plumb, brown sugar, chocolate, coffee...ohhh yeah perfectly balanced. Big welcomed warming finish. For 12% this is well hidden though. Is there a better brewery for these types of beers on the planet? I haven't found it yet but I have lots of searching still ahead of me. What I've enjoyed in the two styles i've gobbled from this brewery is the rich, deep complexity and contrasts of flavor that they seem to thrive on, and pay particular attention to. Thanks.

It pours creamy and dark and right from the start, you know you are dealing with as serious brew. The nose is clove, spice, and sweetness, harknening back to its German wheat roots. Its flavor profile has clove, banana, and a variety of other flavors that make this complex, but not muddled, bold but not over powering. While this is no denying an alcohol presence, it is felt more in the core than in the mouth. Truly, this is an exceptional beer that should be savored.

Oh my. What I thought I would get is so totally different than what this beer is. Thinking this was going to be cloyingly sweet based on my favorite dopplebock celebator, I was so pleasantly surprised by the magnificent malt/hop/sweetness balance this had. This is not for the faint of heart. The alcohol is very present and the lacing is everywhere on the glass. This beer has wonderful flavor and character. It's hard to describe. For fans of malty German dark beers, who are not afraid to drop down $5 on a single bottle, you will be rewarded...

2008 vintage into Duvel tulip.

I'd expected from this one to be merely an Aventinus on steroids, an amassment of standard weizenbock flavors without much complexity but so much fuller and stronger, although it's hard to imagine a stronger Aventinus which itself is a kind of buildup of hefeweizen qualities.

Opaque ruby brown topped by resistant moussy tan head gradualy subsiding into solid cap that remains. Rich aroma of dark fruits represented by figs, raisins, prunes and cherries with accompaining fruity tartness and addition of banana and bubble gum. Melanoidins were bringing bitter-sweetish sensations of lightly toasted bread.

Very malty with apparently no hops. Marriage of dried dark fruits with melanoidins and addition of vestigial flavors of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate. Plum brandy and blueberry liqueur round the flavor profile.
Excellent, so much complexity and intensity in here, qualities of quad and imperial stout combined.

Full bodied, always at the edge of being syrupy but never crossing the line. Extremely well hidden alcohol can be barely felt in the throat - just wondering where all the 12% had gone.

Alcohol will get you, but won't hit you, no, you will be laid down caressed by invisible weightless hand.

Had this from a 330ml bottle - this is A LOT for a 12% beer:

A - I would say like Coke if people did not construe this negatively but it kind of looks like cloudy coke - kind of rustic and naturbelassen only let down is the head that fizzes away

S - Wheat, dark fruit some roast malt similar to normal Weizenbock but you can smell the alcohol in it and there s no roast nuts

T - Like Aventinus which is in my view one of the worlds best beers but you also taste the alcohol almost a dark rum like note to it

M - Medium carbonation, smooth slight prickle

D - The only downside because it is VERY substantial and you will feel the alcohol - a 150ml bottle would be optimal

500mL poured into a champagne flute at 7C tasted at 9-12C.

Dark earthy rich cocoa nibs-chestnut-mahogany brown, a light reddish clay hues with a thick and stable sea foam head that is spotty but generally dense 7cm head that remains indefinitely. Mostly clear with a little bit of hazing, but high density gives a more obstructed appearance. Sporadic but ample carbonation. Very nice but with little lacing that I would have otherwise expected.

Nose of alcohol, coming in at 12% this is not surprise, but it doesn't come across as gasoline or as evaporation of the excess. Warm caramel and dried, juicy fruits: plum and raisin. Balancing spices of all spice, old nutmeg (but not the zest of mace) and clove. Elevated bright notes that flow generously like a cool spring breeze in a citrus orchard.

Dark cooked and dried fruits: plums, figs and apricots. Creamy malt flows just over a light residual sugars and smooth chocolaty roast nuts. Dark bready yeasts lends to the satisfying body that holds up the fruit. The more i look the more the perfect blending melds flavours my palate is just unable to accurately distinguish. Impeccable for the style for what I have previously tasted.

Mouth feel is smooth and generously light while creamy and rich. Lots of sugars and a little fat on the finish. Luxury.

Just great. Way too drinkable for a 12% ABV. Smooth, robust and as easy or complex as you could want it to be. I would have liked to seen a little more layering on the nose and a lot more lacing. The 5 on taste is more like a 4.8-4.9 for style for sure, but was just a little to condensed for my palate and for personal taste is a tad generous (more like 4.5), but amazing; likewise the nose but layered complexity on the nose is more important to my "unbiased" rating than is layering in the flavour profile. So the nose is more like 4.25 but worth the round up.

God damned great fucking beer!

Hazy amber/brown, with beige notes. Big head, goes away fast, big retention.
Smells of perfect banana and clove, flowers, wheat, yeasty bread dough.
Really complex fruitiness, with really sweet cherries (with a hint of sourness also), red berries, pulms, figs, all of this dark fruit having a very jam-like sweetness. Sweet banana chips also, light acidic red apple, red grapes. Big vineous character, like a sweet red wine. Honey notes, and spices are big vanilla, big clove and some nice prickly pepper. Sweet wheaty malts, caramel, reminding of sweet cake, going to gingerbread. Even if itțs really sweet, it's not unpleasant, complementing the warm alcohol (surprisingly not boozy, considering it's 12%). Herbal notes felt towards the hoppy finish, with a decent bitterness.
Somewhat creamy, low carbonation, perfect as a sipper.
A real delicacy, not one to pass up. Can't wait to get my hands on an old vintage. Top-tier brew.

Picked this up on a recommendation from our brew club expert.

A- Murky reddish brown with a persistent off white creamy head that coats the glass. Very leggy as you expect of a 12 ABV beer. Cloudy is good here since it is a wheat beer.

S- Rich dark malt with floral and fruit notes that swirl together and recombine into something a little different with each sip. And I do mean sip with this one.

T- Like the nose, the flavor shifts across the palate. Dark fruit, fresh cherry and very little bitterness. The alcohol is well concealed but it will sneak up.

M- Full, smooth and well carbonated which captures the wheat beer style and avoids being syrupy. No heat from the alcohol.

O- This is one amazing beer. A wheat ice dopplebock. Complex like a good cognac and I could see savoring this with a good cigar.

Man...this beer is great...a nice dark brown color...a wonderful sweet smell...and im not into sweet beers...This one is a major exception..the alcohol content at 12.0%ABV may take a few points off the drinkability but i will say outright that this is definitely one of my very favorites..i dont even need to describe it....if you are into beer and havent tried this one you absolutely must try it...
I had an 11.2oz bottle and
i sipped on it for about an hour...drank it straight out of the bottle...i only know the color cuz my mom asked to try it and so i gave her a little bit thinking she would be disgusted by it but she thought it was real good ...i was shocked ....must try it

A beer that has intrigued me for quite some time so glad to sit down with a bottle. And it's a fresh one bottled less than five months ago.

Dark reddish brown but lighter than I had expected. Fairly clear with low carbonation. Head stands little chance I suppose when competing with such substantial alcohol. Not exactly an attractive beer, but this is just the beginning.
In it's favor, the sediment packs so tightly that even the last pour is clear.

Unlike your average beer, or just about any beer. Quite heavy on the dark stone fruit. Almost like a heavy alcohol fruit cake. Somehow it keeps the alcohol from becoming hot and dominating the brew which let's the sweetness and fruit combine into forms not seen elsewhere. <-- means the alcohol is taking effect

The taste is fruit cake (alcohol soaked of course) in liquid form. Just so easy to sit back and enjoy like any any good desert beer. Probably exactly what they intended it to be. Funny how removed it is from a standard hops malt and yeast beer, this is just taken to another level completely.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly light and the finish clean. Incredible for a 12% beer. Well, I say beer, but really this has lost much of it's connection with the beer family. And the evolution is something to behold. I expected this to be good, but this is exceptional. Well played German brewers, well played.

Gift from Carlos. In Ikea's pint glass. Playing Bardbarian. Spectacular. Really nice caramel sweetness. Not a sugary sweetness like in some belgians. Its high ABV doesnt bother at all.

We interrupt this marathon session of House to bring you something equally unproductive: A beer review.

This eisbock pours vaporous and slow, a murky darkened brown with a crown of soft cream for head.

God this smells good. Explosive like the best of Belgian dubbels with a similar character. Sugary figs and dates, banana esters, with a hint of bite to come. Only one way to find out.

A.E. really is like condensed Aventinus. Creamier though, spicier too. Funny how much complexity a bit more ethanol can bring. Ones palate doesn't struggle with this beer though. ABV is almost unbelievably disguised. Like a God who hides in shades of oak or fruit, a bitter sweetness one hopes will never leave the glass. This is a soaking beer, or drowning, some would say. Not for parties.

Producing a drinkable eisbock is hard enough. Producing one so downright beautifully flavored is sheer art. If you're in the mood, this beer will take you where you want to go. Be careful.

I thought I would show this beer who was boss by authoritatively dousing the inside of my glass with it. It formed a thick, dynamic layer of foam only to be carved out by deeply gouged giant bubbles. In seconds it hissed into oblivion.
I smelled it and thought of bong water. Cola, iced coffee, sasafras: they arose too. This is the essence of slowly blackened wheat. Buried wheat. Moldy wheat. Suave, slick textures paint the inside of my mouth with coats of licorice and pepper. An interminable twang of sharp, yeasty spice (fuled by alcohol no doubt) stretches out after the swallow. It jangles my lower jaw until it is assimilated into the glory of this beer. From there it spreads to my brain. I'm glad the good folks down at Schneider decided to usher this creation into life. It makes a nice glaze for the inside of my throat.

2013 vintage boxed version.

Poured out with a generous bone-white head, faded quickly but some of the lacing stuck around, coating the glass nicely. Beer is a lovely hazy mahogany/ruby colour.

Oh man, sugary as hell on the nose, but I love it. Figs, coconut sugar, over-ripe bananas, molasses, maple syrup, hints of chocolate, candied pear, prunes....amazing. Phenomenal. The booze is there for sure, but it's completely eclipsed by the sugary dark fruit.

Flavour is full on sugary maltiness.Dark fruits, prunes, figs, brown sugar.

I love sweet beers. This is in my top 10 for sure.

A - Rootbeer or cola brown with absolutely no head. A slight haze of whispy smoke covers the top of the brew. This is purple when held to candlelight and the hoards of sea monkeies dancing in the brew become visible.

S - Wonderous aroma of chocolate cake, tootsie rolls, LIttle Debbie snack cakes, yeasty chocolate coated donuts, some gentle grapey vinous scents, and light touches of leafy hops.

T - German chocolate cake, loads of yeast, and a humongous alcohol presence dominate the palate. Behind the chocolatey malt and strong spiced rum alcohol flavors, a gentle hop bitterness adds to a dry finish.

M - Super thick and gritty with a huge alcohol kick in the teeth. This has as much in common with a fine scotch as it does beer.

D - The gargantuan alcohol burn makes this a slow sipper, not a sessioner, but I will return to this once in a while when there is time to slowly enjoy this fine brew. I drank this by candlelight when our power was knocked out one snowstormy night and this was the perfect warming beverage for the occasion.

So yeah, wow.

I was a fan of the normal Aventinus and quite enjoyed its banana bread creamy sweet dark mileu. Then I heard about it's steroid abusing older brother, and I had to have it.

Thankfully the Whole Foods on Haight St in San Francisco has a semi-amazing selection, including this little gem, standing short next to the bomber+1/2 of the regular variety. Looks are deceiving.

So first of all let's acknowledge the 12% abv and agree that, yes, it's very strong, but in no way does this detract from the experience. On the contrary it adds a sharp slice of danger and fun to what is essentially one of the sweetest and most open-armed heavyweights I've ever experienced.

It looks like it should: dark belgian brown color, minimal but creamy head, sliding like effervescent oil (whatever that is) into the glass. It looks serious without a whiff of foreboding.

Smells like its (larger) little brother: bananas, raisins, and a bushel of apples. In fact, there are literally several dozen apples inside my glass at this very moment. And the best part is that they don't overpower the taste. It's still bursting with that sweet bread high and the almost pruny low end - in a good way. There's a slight hint of the alcohol in the olfactory, I must admit.

Tastes like a champ, hands down. By that I mean that it fulfills all the promise of the nose, sweet and dark and fruity and the absolute complexity you'd hope to experience from a brew of this caliber. And truly, that 12% abv doesn't present itself on the palate.

It goes down smooth, it's interesting to the point of distraction, and it leaves an aftertaste like devouring a rainforest's worth of exotic fruit - and then drinking meade or some other mythological alcoholic concoction which we cannot fathom in modern terms of thought. Basically it's smoother than you'd think, richer than it has any right to be, and masks its muscle well.

I love it. Highly impressed.

Beer pours a somewhat murky brown color that turns to black in the glass. Some brown highlights, no red. Creamy and sticky head.

Aroma of alcohol, intense toast and malt aroma. Tones of melandoidin, toffee, dark fruits. No hop aroma.

Balanced to the sweet side with a boozy finish. Full bodied and smooth in your mouth. Warning from the alcohol. Dark fruit. Toffee.

This is an amazing beer. If it were not for the high alcohol it would be a nightly treat.

Live review. Poured from the 11.2 oz bottle that I purchased at Siciliano's in Grand Rapids a few weeks ago for $4.79 into my Duvel Green tulip glass. 12.0 % ABV as listed on the label of my bottle. The following is printed on the back label: 2008/26211

A Dark brown body that has the greatest weizenbock glow in front of direct (and intense) light source. I had to hold it close to a light bulb to enjoy the subtle brown/dark caramel glow. Head is a 3 inch generous, bubbly light brown that stuck around for about 2 minutes, dissipating to a ring around the top with an island in the middle. Finally, sediment floating in my glass adds that classic, unfiltered look as well. Almost no lacing, however. 4.5

S Well it has that excellent Aventinus malt, wheat, banana, clove goodness but I perceive more alcohol in this one as well. I will now admit to a great bias to this smell in a beer, one of the greatest beers in the world. That being said, objectively it is complex, interesting, inviting. It cannot be improved. 5.0

T Oh, just great! The clove, banana, wheat, sweet malt are all there along now with a ramped up alcohol. They have taken a world class beer and actually made it better. 5.0

M Nice carbonation allows this beer to dance across the tongue and the malt syrupy stickiness thickens things up in a wonderful way. I do not recall this much carbonation in the regular Aventinus. Between the carbonation, the malt sweetness, the other tastes I am full after 11.2 ounces. Indeed, this beer is like a meal! 5.0

D This will be savored but it is a one and done. 4.0

Notes: I am blown away. Again, to take a world class beer and actually improve on it? Incredible. This was one expensive beer, about $0.42 per ounce but it is worth every penny. Everyone reading this should seek out and try Aventinus Eisbock. Prost!

500 mL bottle-in-a-carton picked up at the LCBO; bottled Aug 12 2013 and served at cellar temperature. Eisbock is a new style for me, but I've tried multiple Schneider & Sohn products over the years and loved them all.

Pours an opaque chestnut brown colour with some reddish highlights, topped off with one finger of creamy, off-white head. Retention is pretty good - the dense foam remains in place for more than a few minutes, slowly seeping away until only a modest cap and collar remain. The aroma is rich and fruity, consisting of big notes of red grape, prune and raisin, in addition to accompanying hints of banana, caramel, bready malts, clove and ethanol. Colour me enticed.

Wow - this is a seriously intense brew, with sweet flavours of caramel and molasses figuring in strongly throughout the sip. Fruity flavours of ripe banana and prune are also quite dominant, with added notes of brown pear, cherry, red wine and raisins. The profile finishes with spicy, yeasty hints of clove, vanilla and cinnamon, as well as a marked, boozy warming effect in the aftertaste. Full-bodied, with low carbonation levels that result in a beer with an exceptionally silky-smooth feel, which provides a satisfying presence on the palate. One person could probably finish off this bottle without too much trouble - but beer this delicious simply demands to be shared with friends.

Final Grade: 4.76, a mind-boggling A+. The standard "Tap 6" Aventinus was already one of my favourite beers to begin with - but Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock manages to blow its (still-impressive) little brother completely out of the water. This is an incredibly well-made beer, and of the several-hundred different brews that I've reviewed on this site, it would not be a stretch to say that this is definitely one of the best of the bunch - the perfect way to celebrate 850 reviews. Great value at its Ontario price point, and an absolute must-try - I'll definitely be picking up a few more bottles, to ensure that I will be able to enjoy this stellar brew even after the local stock runs dry.

Look: Pours mahogany brown with a thin, slightly tinted head. Good head retention but minimal lacing. Settles down to a thin, foam cap. Slight sedimentation although it would appear that the pour left most of it in the bottle.

Smell: There's a real car-crash of smells here: sweetness abounds - think bubblegum, dark malts, burnt sugar, molasses and fruit. Definite hints of bananas and cloves but very little in the way of alcohol - there's a slightly medicinal, phenolic hint but sweetness dominates. Very much so.

Taste: Tastes much like it smells, albeit with added bananas. Quite where that comes from I couldn't say, but the overriding taste is that of slightly overripe bananas with a hint of cloves and burnt sugar. The alcohol is extremely well hidden - there's a nice, warming feeling in the back of the throat and stomach but that's about your lot. Probably a bit too sweet for my tastes but nonetheless it's not unpleasant.

Feel: Dangerous! Not massively carbonated and not excessively heavy either given the petroleum-grade ABV. There's a slightly sticky finish to it but I personally don't mind that. TL;DR - it doesn't feel like a 12% brew any more than it tastes like one.

Overall: Make no mistake, this is a heavy hitter - it's more deserving of an octane rating than an ABV. That said, if you're prepared to spend the time sipping and appreciating the multitude of flavours on offer then it's a very rewarding beer. Drinking more than a couple in one session probably isn't a good idea unless industrial-strength hangovers are your thing (don't ask ...!)

It's difficult to drink many of these if you're at a place where you have to order. "May I please have an Aventinus Weizen Eisbock" is something I can only say before I've even had one of said beer.

I absolutely love the smell of this beer. Weihenstephaner Vitus is what turned me on to the wheat bock styles, with their clovey, banana-y goodness and their sneaky high alcohol content. I first tried the regular aventinus and when I heard about an aventinus that was a more concentrated version I couldn't believe it.

I drink this beer out of a wine glass to remind me not to throw it down the hatch like I would with some oher beers (after the intial tasting of course). I don't think any of the flavors in this beer are subtle, but each sip is worth a savor.

I can drink this stuff all night... if I pace myself right

Taste: Tart cherry, classic dry spiciness of wheat beer, and a lingering turbinado sugar sweetness.
Mouthfeel: Thinner than expected with this alcohol content, with small and crisp carbonation. My personal preference would be a slightly heavier mouthfeel.
Drinkability: Absolutely terrifyingly smooth and easy to drink, yet full of big flavors.

This is a well-developed and remarkable brew. It appeals to my love for big, strong beers, but the tartness and malted wheat make it unique. One of my favorites! I wonder how it ages...

As a big fan of Dubbels, Quads, and Belgian strong dark ales this beer is exceptional and my number one favorite. For the most part, this Eisbock is a "reduced" version of the the original Aventinus Doppelbock - meaning that extra water has been frozen off and separated leaving behind a thick fruity malt that is masked by a moderate amount of hops. Very similar to an Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock on steroids, this is a complex beer with hints of banana, fig, plum and raisin... delicious.

A: Pours a very dark brown with two fingers khaki colored head which dissipates moderately leaving decent lacing and excellent carbonation.

S: Dark fruits all over the nose including banana, plum and a slight peppery scent. There is also a bready yeast aroma and a significant alcohol presence. Excellent smell.

T: The flavor is loaded with sweet malts, but excellently balanced by light hops. Flavors of banana, fig, caramel and raisin malts are present. There is also plenty of spice and clove that give it a slightly burning character which is perfectly balanced with the overall taste.

M/D: This beer is incredibly easy to drink which is surprising for a 12% beverage. Unlike other beers, you can taste this all over your tongue from start to finish. Although the alcohol warms your body it's not to strong. The aftertaste is smooth, delicious and leaves you wanting another sip immediately. Dangerous!

O: Without a doubt this is a world class beer. I prefer it to others including Ayinger Celebrator, Trappist Westlvleteren 8 and and Trappist Rochefort 10. That's a bold statement, but this is an excellently crafted beer. Not to mention that bang-for-the buck it's cheaper than standard Aventinus and it can't be beat. I'm glad I have more in the fridge!
