From Leura. Bottled 2013.

A - cola black with reddish hues. One finger head fizzes and dies unpleasantly. No lace at all.

S - brown sugar, alcoholic.

T - more brown sugar as a sweet bomb. Stewed caramels and toffees, figs, prunes, hint banana, all too sweet and little balance.

M - medium weight, lightly but spritizily carbonated. Alcohol burn.

O - my first of style and I am unsure. All too sweet and alcoholic reminds me more of hooch than beer. Better as it warms as the sweetness aligns closer to barley wine style.

Bottle has the year 2012. So, obviously, it is one year old. I let the beer warmed a bit.

Appearance: Very dark brown with slight dark mahogany hues, but it really looked almost black. There was a half finger tan head, which only held for a couples of minutes or so.

Aroma: Slight funk. Dark fruits, mostly of prunes and figs. Not much banana. Mild spice of clove. Alcohol is pretty evident in the aroma.

Taste: Over-ripe banana and prunes. Some dark fruits like figs and cherry. Spices, but specifically cloves. A slight funk still is present. Light wheat and breadiness. Roasted malts. Some chocolate and even some molasses. There was a red/purple grape juice sweetness to the beer as well. Alcohol is for sure in the taste. At first, it was a bit overpowering but it toned down. Either I've gotten use to it or it's the temperature. There was for a moment a rubbing alcohol likeliness, which was a bit distracting. But that can be easy to ignore with all the flavors that is going on.

Mouthfeel: Definitely has alcohol warming; somewhat significance. A creamy medium-heavy feel. Carbonation is on the low medium side.

Overall: A very interestingly complex beer. Probably the most complex I've had yet. I really did not know what to expect but it did tasted pretty good. A sipper.

Had this many years ago, and vaguely remember it as intensely raisiny and didn't really like it at the time. Since then I've gotten pretty fond of Aventinus itself, and got this as a gift recently.

Dark opaque mahogany, billowing head of foam that settles after awhile, leaving behind flecks of lace. Thin broken surface skim.

Aromas of banana, rum, molasses. Slight alcohol and sweet grain as it warms.

Caramel and bananas, brown sugar, rum, slight bite of alcohol heat. Smooth and full bodied, chewy and rich. A big beer perfect for a snowy December night.
