I purchased this before I learned of Michael Jackson's passing earlier today. I am reviewing this in memory of Michael Jackson, Beer Hunter.
Poured cool into a La fin du Monde tulip.

A - Pours a deep caramel, almost opaque brown w/ a 1.5 inch tan head. The head decends rapidly and becomes a thin ring that creates an almost transparent lace effect.

S - A rich caramel and raisin with a touch of spice and brown sugar. Very intense and slightly rum-like w/ a ripe banana and date note.

M - A smooth, sweet feel like rum raisin bread. Dry and mildly boozy feel, the ale/lager mix gives a very bold, yet smooth character w/ light carbonation.

T - Luscious immensely rich and pleasing malt like honeyed wheat one moment and a dark smooth bock the next. A splendid taste of roasted malt without any harsh flavors. Caramel and maple notes mix with full-on fruit. Ripe banana, fig, cherry and raisin w/ a cinnamon and brown sugar tinge. The subtleties of wood and touches of rum in its essence teeter back and forth while they slowly envelope the taste buds. Tastes of spiced apple and clove w/ a warming bock character that is unmatched criss-cross each other. A sugary flavor persists with an intensity of high abv, which translates into a very complex beer.

D - A unique wheat/bock blend to say the least. This is chock full of intense bombastic taste while still containing a good amount of finesse.
I consider it a great example of German brewing excellence and quality. A bit strong to be a 5 in drinkability for me, but it won me over. Such a great beer that was just another in a list of many that Michael Jackson promoted. The drinkability is great, a wonderful beer that is important traditionally as well flavor wise IMO.

Hazy amber/brown, with beige notes. Big head, goes away fast, big retention.
Smells of perfect banana and clove, flowers, wheat, yeasty bread dough.
Really complex fruitiness, with really sweet cherries (with a hint of sourness also), red berries, pulms, figs, all of this dark fruit having a very jam-like sweetness. Sweet banana chips also, light acidic red apple, red grapes. Big vineous character, like a sweet red wine. Honey notes, and spices are big vanilla, big clove and some nice prickly pepper. Sweet wheaty malts, caramel, reminding of sweet cake, going to gingerbread. Even if itțs really sweet, it's not unpleasant, complementing the warm alcohol (surprisingly not boozy, considering it's 12%). Herbal notes felt towards the hoppy finish, with a decent bitterness.
Somewhat creamy, low carbonation, perfect as a sipper.
A real delicacy, not one to pass up. Can't wait to get my hands on an old vintage. Top-tier brew.

MF: Thick but prickly (from the alcohol); but mellows out as it warms

Drinks okay, a by the fire sipper.

11.2 oz slender brown bottle with the bottle # 06558 and the year 2001 on the back label. Brownish burgundy colour with a fast foaming head that drops quickly to a thin ring of tan lace.

Bubble gum, banana, clove and herbal medicinal phenols in the aroma. Mellow estery almost solvent like alcohol in the nose also.

Lightly syrupy slick on the tongue. Spicy right upfront that rides the medium high carbonation, clove and alcohol come first then some phenolics to mix things up a bit. Touch of banana and breadiness in the middle. Hops are not there but there are other components that keep this brew in balance. Estery and slightly solvent alcohol even rides through the finish.

Not as complex as I though it would have been, the head lacks big time with a thin ring of lace … other than that this is a great brew. Alcohol is deceiving in a way as it lurks around to sneak up on you.

A: Pours a dark brown with a quarter finger tall off white head which dissipates quickly, leaving only a thin ring of bubbles at the edge of the glass. Moderate lacing is present.

S: Aromas of clove, banana, some alcohol, plum, and vanilla are all present. The smell is very complex and very enjoyable.

T: Like the smell, the taste is dominated by the clove and banana with hints of plum, vanilla, and brown sugar. You can taste a bit of the alcohol but it does not burn and is not unpleasant.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Drinks like a beer with a much lower ABV, there are hints of the alcohol in the smell and taste but it is pretty well hidden - this beer could really sneak up on you. I really enjoy the smell and the flavors of this beer and will definitely be having it again. Though I might add that this is not really a sessionable beer unless you are the ultimate champ - just too much ABV.

Review from notes.

A: Pours a murky purple/brown/orange color, very impressive looking. A one finger head on top that had great retention and some nice lacing on the sides.

S: Very sweet and extremely malt driven. Caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and a lot of dark fruit, chiefly raisins and prunes, but also a bit of fig and some underlying vanilla. There is a bit of bubble gum as well.

T: Similarly malt driven. Thick caramel and some bready malt are apparent immediately. Rich dark fruit flavors include raisins, plums, and some prune, which impart a sweetness as well. There is also a bit of brown sugar and a hint of vanilla.

M: Full bodied and surprisingly creamy. Thick, but certainly not too thick. The 12% is hidden extremely well.

O: A fantastic beer, much better than other eisbocks I have had.

Cloudy, light brown color. Large spots for lace. Moderate head.

Smells of banana, clove and semisweet chocolate.

Lots of wheat on the tongue. Some sweet bread flavor as well. Strong banana in the swallow. A slightly sweet aftertaste. Good body with a high carbonation level. Very smooth.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Rochefort chalice. Poured a dark brown color with a fizzy one finger tan head. The head settled out pretty fast and formed a thin ring around the outside of the glass. Didn't leave much lacing as I drank it.

The smell is malty and sweet with a lot of dark fruit aromas. There are notes of sweet raisins, plums and cloves with a little banana as well. The taste has a lot of the same flavors present in the nose with dark fruit, an almost candy sweetness, cloves and banana. It also has a little alcohol present in the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with above carbonation. Drinkability is good, it's very delicious but the alcohol is noticeable making it a little less drinkable. Overall a very good tasting and smelling beer. It could have had a little better head retention and a little less carbonation in my opinion, but still an excellent beer.

From 09/01/13 notes. Had this on tap at The Arlington in LBI, NJ. 12 oz. pour in a tulip...I've had this one a few times in the past and always liked it.

a - Pours a deep reddish- mahogany brown color with one to two inches of light tan head and moderate carbonation evident. Little bit of lacing left on the glass.

s - Smells of sweet dark fruits, roasted malts, toasted malts, cloves, spices, bananas, sugar, caramel malts, toffee, and figs and raisins. Nice nose, load of malts to it and fruit.

t - Tastes of dark fruits, bananas, toasted malts, roasted malts, burnt malts, sweet caramel malts, chocolate, cloves, spices, Belgian yeast, and bready malts. Awesome bananas and fruit, and more Belgian yeast here to it.

m - Medium body and low carbonation. Smooth and creamy, very easy to drink. Awesome mouthfeel, can't believe it is 12% ABV.

o - Overall I thought this was a great beer; super easy to drink. Tons of bananas, malts, and dark fruits, and some Belgian notes in the taste. Great beer; one of those ones I see everywhere but rarely buy, and I need to buy it more often.

Appears a big deep murky caramel amber brown hue, large highly carbonated effervescent tan head forms quick and fades slowly. The lacing is thick and clings effortlessly to the glass. Aroma contains tart apples, figs, and raisins with a slight vinegar or fermented cider edge to it. Fusel alcohol flows as well as concentrated sticky brown molasses and toasted caramel notes, spicy with clove and effervescent carbonation tickling the nose hairs. Flavor brings a flood of dramatic caramel and burnt brown sugar malt sweetness with layers of alcohol ripened dried fruits glazed with sugar. Mild banana strong upfront tart apples and deep raisin notes galore. Mouthfeel is bubbly with carbonation coming real lively, body is medium to full texture is syrupy especially as it warms although it never comes of cloying to me. Drinkability is actually pretty awesome for a German ice beer, it focuses and concentrates all of the likeable characteristics

The beer is a burnt orange hue, with a small head that dissipates rapidly, leaving minimal lacing. The aroma brings bananas, dark fruits, wheat, clove, and alcohol. Quite tasty. Bananas soaked in alcohol and a rum characteristic work well together. Sweetness and alcohol are present throughout, making this bottle optimal for sharing, as I wouldn't want more than half the bottle. The beer is medium bodied with moderately low carbonation. Overall, a very good representation of the style, though I seldom drink beers of this ilk.

2010 bottle shared with pmsawyer. Poured into a snifter, this brew appears dark brown in color with some orange clarity around the edges. A creamy tan cap appears and fades to a ring around the outside of the glass that stays throughout the duration. A webby pattern of lace clings to the glass.

The smell of this brew is apple and pear skins. Lightly spicy with some typical weizen-like notes of clove and yeast. This is quite a fruity smelling brew with alcohol esters being fairly pronounced. As the brew warms up, there are faint notes of cinnamon, molasses and dark sugary scents that collectively seem like a strange sort of alcoholic apple pie.

The taste is spicy with clove and fruity alcohol esters. Pear and apple skins come to mind mostly with a kick of spiced alcohol. For a beer that smells quite deep and intense with character, the flavor falls a bit short and is not nearly as complex. As the brew warms up, some chocolate grain notes become evident.

This is a full bodied brew that is lightly carbonated. For 12% abv, the alcohol is well included and is matched with an array of flavors to make it quite enjoyable. I have not had a lot of experience with the eisbock style, but this was enough to spark my interest into having more.

330 mL bottle poured into a Kuhnhenn snifter. 2010 bottle.

Appearance - Pours with a significant amount of sediment in the stream of the pour, but then I find none in the glass. My eyes must deceive me. Deep amber, like a black rum. Small khaki head, but it's short lived. After 5 minutes, it looks like I'm drinking 10 ounces of cognac. That would be a rough night.

Smell - Booze, whoa. Bubble gum, caramel, bananas, and a strong spiciness that is amplified by the alcohol.

Taste - The wheat is much more present here. Gives it a grittiness that definitely adds to the flavors. Very fruity character with that distinctive bubble gum flavor reminiscent of the non-iced version. Bananas and cloves that further remind me of its wheated roots. The finish is booze and caramel malt, though. A slight throwback to the fruits, but it's all toffee in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation and quite hot, even for 12%. That said, I still have to concentrate to pace myself.

Overall - Enjoyable and different from most beers out there. I had this out of a wooden cask one time and drank three of them. I don't know how I did that. Wasted youth. Anyway, it doesn't impress me as much out of the bottle, but perspective is a funny thing.

Murky dark brown color with creamy, beige head. Aroma is yeasty with lots of dark fruit character. You still get some of the wheat beer components like banana and clove but also the dried fruits like raisins and dates. Taste starts sweet and slightly boozy with lots of yeast esters. There is some bitterness on the finish and continues in the aftertaste but mostly it's a sweet, syrupy beer. Body is heavy and quite smooth, with a good amount of carbonation. The alcohol level plus the intense yeast character make the beer feel a bit cloying but overall it's a nice, complex tasting beer.

2004 vintage

Pours cloudy light brown with a few bubbles, but no head retention to speak of.

The smell is of dark grains, fruitiness - banana especially - and strong alcohol.

The taste is of sweet caramel with banana clove and plenty of alcohol. Not really complex, but still tasty. Full-bodied.

It's thick, rich creamy. Alcohol lingers in an assertive way. Sweetness lingers.

This is a nice sipping brew. Personally, I prefer the original Aventinus. - but this is a nice twist on it. Sweet, thick and strong. Too much for more than one - but, one to sip and savor is nice.

Appearance: deep, dark brown body, bordering on purple, with a large, blooming, bubbling head of foam.
Aroma: most impressive: wide, vast, brimming with fruitiness, contains the aspects of a good Bavarian weizen, then widened, and filled up with alcohol and medicine. Fruity, yet stinging...sweet, delicious, spicy, tantalizing...
Taste...fantastic texture, floods the mouth with flavor, excellent weizen graininess, raisiny, figgy fruitiness,doubled up with richness...each gulp brings waves of sensation...I find myself liking this more as I go...it's punishing, though, flavorful, yet stinging and slaying, a serious threat to sobriety...
a bold attack on the senses...the perfect nightcap...just the thing to knock me out and send me to Slumberland.

Poured from the bottle into a curved wheat ale glass. My first Eisbock, might as well go all out here, let's see what she gives. Bottle number 2011 049133.

A three finger head with lots of staying power, seriously looking frozen in place with a light caramel top that slowly settles. Body color is a classic mohogany brown, with a faint just super faint tiny pin head bubbles slowly rising.

Nose hits with, a real interesting character that I have never sense before in any beer. Fruit raspberry, but toned down with a chocolate faint malt backbone. Fruit character takes over, turns into an amalgamation of red fruits, into a nice jammy spread, and faint dry character hinting at a juicy texture maybe coming? I am very intrigued for my first Eisbock, this has major potential. I am sensing raspberry but with no sense of raspberry fruit in this at all.

Taste hits with a surprise. More liqueur like than beer, surprising nice rolling tolerable heat mixing with maraschino heat cherries and a dry yeast finish. Palate has a nice tolerable simple texture not taking away from anything in taste. No fizzy carbonation with truly a classic wheat chew texture. Malt richness turns to an incredibly fruit red sense, juicy, lingering.

Overall, this was NOTHING what I expected for this style on first try. I love this red fruit angle, and warming tolerable boozy character. Just a great unique brew.

A - Deep amber brown body with a nice bubbly offwhite head.

S - Alot of wheat and lightly roasted grains in the nose. Sweet alcohol wafting around in the form of brandy or rum with bananas. A touch of malt and dry fruit.

T - Tastes of brandy soaked fruit and alcohol warmth. Malty notes mingling with wheat toast. SLight dark sugar mixes with the wheat twang and finishes with an evaporating warmth.

M - A solid medium body with a nice hot bite. Warming and drying the mouth as the beer goes down. This one is actually very tolerable within its high abv. The alcohol isnt masked but blended nicely.

O - An excellent eisbock, with a nice complexity and harmony of flavors and body.

Picked up a bottle of their reserve/anniversary series. This one was brewed in 2006, released for 2013. Poured in a weisse vase, the beer is a deep, dark, chestnut-highlighted brown coloring with a slight haze, no head, and a collection of carbonation bubbles settling onto the surface that you are unable to see throughout the body. Looks solid. Aromas of date and fig all over the forward nose, with a solid richness throughout. Earthy tones, with cherry highlights and a boozy kick. Flavors of roast and old world fruit sweetness on the forward tongue, with a blending of date and fig forming a solid backbone, along with some rich, roasted caramel notes. Earthy tones round everything out, and there is a definite kick of booze throughout the beer. The ABV also has a wine-like character to it. Smooth, robust body that the carbonation lightens, but you still get to enjoy chewing on. Wow! Richly sweet, earthy aftertaste with a building warmth as you go. The finish is robust, smooth, and leaves a cloying layer of caramel and fruit sweetness. Holy hell, this beer is tasty, big, and apparently ages amazingly well.

12 ouncer sampled, bottle is now a new squarer shape...pours a rich and unusual slighly purple/brown color, moderate off white head and just a bit of lacing.Nose is quite fruity, plums, bananas, apricots. This is a strong, rich and flavorful sipper. Its heady and intoxicating @ 12%. Lovely, soft and warming on the tongue. Complex notes of more fruits, wood,alcohol, brandy, yeast and sweet Malt. Fine stuff, well worth a try.

Poured from a bottle into a Ayinger celebrator glass. Close enough. Beer is dark brown but not approaching black and really hazy, it was hazy before some sediment made it into the glass. Forms a one finger head of small white bubbles but the head has no staying power, it ends up completely gone after a few minutes, no lacing on the glass but wow is this thing carbonated.

Aroma is malty with a hint of roast, no detectable alcohol but this bottle is more than 2 years old.

Beer is medium to light in body and pretty carbonated in the mouth, its sweet but not cloying. Its very malty up front but not hot at all. OK, I'm impressed. This beer is quite drinkble for the 12%, in fact I drink it before it hits me and start another doppelbock, not the smartest thing I've ever done. Its smooth and has a great finish that not too dry. There is no aftertaste and its a great drinking beer. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

2010 bottle, drank April 2011

A: Dark, black-tea with an off-white head.

S: Booze. Hammy smoke. Wheat. Black pepper, spicy ginger. Hint of banana. It’s more bock than hefe.

T: Strong booze note. Wheat. Touch of banana. Cinnamon, pepper. Big molasses-laden liquorish body. A light woody bitter note hangs around in the background.

M: Med/light body with a strong, warm alcohol character.

O: An interesting brew. The concentrated alcohol drowns out a lot of the softer hefe notes that I felt the standard Aventinus had done a fantastic job of retaining. That said, the alcohol accentuates a variety of new flavors; notably the molasses, liquorish and spice. I’m not sure if it’s worth the trade off though.

The color is a very hazy dark brown with big sediment chunks floating around near the bottom of my mug. The creamy head is average-sized and off-white. The aroma is a combination of the typical clovey hefeweizen smells and rich, fruity malt. The aroma profile is nice, but I was expecting a little stronger from an eisbock. The taste makes me think of a dunkleweizen on steroids. An initial strong attack of weisse flavors is joined by dark fruity malts. A bite of alcohol is noted, but the 12% is still covered pretty nicely. The malt flavors become more prevalent as the beer warms up and some of the initial strength of the phenols subsides. Strong, well-layered flavors are the highlight here. The malty finish seems to last forever and caps off a great beer with a flavorful reminder of the strong taste of Aventinus' Weizen-Eisbock. Highly recommended.

12/01/07- Purchased at the Toronado in San Francisco, CA in 2005.

Presentation- 11.2oz bottle with the vintage (2004) and the lot number on the back label.

Appearance- Coca cola like color in the pour. 1/4 inch head on initial pour. Quickly evaporates into no head at all. Leaves absolutely no lace marks whatsoever. Not a big eisbock drinker, so I'm not sure what is the standard.

Smell- Like your Aveninus scent, but with more alcohol added, sweeter caramel malt nose and a bit less nose with the spices (clove mainly).

Taste- A decent amount of clove, a touch of nutmeg and some sugar plums and alcohol soaked dates. Lots of flavor, but seems a tad thin for a beer with such a high abv. Tastes good though.

Mouthfeel- A bit thin, a touch watery and light alcohol aftertaste. Medium carbonation level.

Drinkability- Doesn't seem like 12%. Just finished this and a Gonzo Porter and not feeling much of anything...not to mention the Hopsickle I had earlier while making my chili and cornbread. One of a handful of eisbock's I've had. Was expecting more, but still good and very drinkable. Flavor is good but not as thick as expected. Have had this one on tap before and had better results. Rating is based on a combp of this consumption and past ones.

A fantastic beer, this one. Dark brown/reddish. Off tan head. Lacin gis a bit sparse.

Aroma of subtle spices and light ripe apples. Some hints of noble hops and a solid yet unobtrusive whiff of caramel.

This beer tastes pretty darn good. The dance of malt, hops and yeast is uncanny. There are some shallow dips in the flavor here and there, but they are quickly filled. Apples are ripe without the sugar, a slight tannin quality. The sweetness comes from the caramel and bready yeast. The alcohol is very well hidden.

Feels a bit like a hefe but finishes easy with a touch of syrup. Very nice
